Nikon Z9 Z8 and ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY SETTINGS (Functions you need to know)
There are three astro settings or astro functions built into the Nikon Z9 and Nikon Z8 which are very helpful for astrophotography.

If you use a z lens like the 20mm 1.8s, you don't have to focus at all. Usually the lenses go straight to infinity which is a game changer for me. In all my night sessions with Z6ii and even Z7 I got perfect focus results! Try it, just turn on the camera 😊
REALLY!!! I’m keen as to try it. So an S lens at night on the Z9 goes straight to infinity (a focussed infinity) when you turn the camera on??
@@RalphMayhewPhotography just make sure that in system menu "save Focus position" is turned off. Can't promise for the the z9 but my Z7 and z6ii indeed go to infinity when turned on with an z wide Angle lens (20mm 1.8s and 14 30 F4s).
@@mickue such a clever idea. Will see if it works for me.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography Did anyone get a definitive answer for this? Infinity & focussed?
Happy Birthday! It would be nice If my camera had those display options.
Thanks Leon :D they’re pretty cool.
🎉🎉🎉 happy birthdayyy thanks for sharing. It’s amazing camera
Thank you Tomas. It is :)
Very useful and concise lesson .
Thanks champion!!
Happy Birthday 🎉. Thank you for sharing your experience with shooting astro with the Nikon Z9. Now I really want one😢. Peace and Safe Travels
Thank you!!. I hope I’ve not created to much envy. It would be amazing if the ideal Astro camera was created that only had astro features and did it well and forgot about everything else. They’d need to keep it affordable but I reckon there’s a market for it.
Happy Birthday Ralph!!! 🎉
Thanks so much Greg. Much appreciated brother.
One day older than yesterday 😢
Happy (very belated) Birthday! Thank you for these tips! Was the image you showed at the end a stack or a single image? How do you find the level of noise with a 45MP sensor?
Haha thanks. That was a single image. It’s pretty good. You can also use the new demonise function in Lightroom for even better results. That wasn’t out when I made this.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography thanks for answering! I was just watching this video again and I love the star trail image where the clouds came in. Very unique and cool!
happy belated birthday 🥳🥳 i own the z6ii and i love it but i think i want the z9 for a new main camera at some point. but i also think nikon might release a new flagship at some point soon so im not entirely sure about it
New flagship would be dumbest Nikon decision ever having in mind people still wait z9 deliveries 10 months since the release date, lol
Thank you :) I don’t think Nikon will be releasing a new flagship anytime soon.
Thank you for sharing. Could you show your trick for set the focus at dark night for astrophotography?
Put your lens in manual focus. Use the + button to zoom your screen into the largest star and then focus so the star is pin sharp. Then you’re good to go.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography thank you
Happy birthday to Ralph...
Ahhh thanks!!
I'm interested in the noise level of ISO, how is it comparing with the Z7ii and D850? I am an Astro landscape shoter.
This is the page you need to look at :) www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/RN_ADU.htm
2:45 we have a similar feature with Sony, but unfortunately we can't zoom in that mode (eg to make sure the focus is pinpoint). Can you zoom in in that mode on the Z9?
I’m pretty sure you can. My z9 has spent the last 6 weeks getting repaired so can’t check for you just yet.
Happy birthday
Thanks so much Justin.
Happy 42nd birthday!!!
Haha thanks!
Will the Z9 auto focus on the stars like the OM1?
That's a great question. I took it outside just before and checked. The answer is.... almost, but no not quite and therefore not good enough, so no!
Happy birthday, Z9 years old.
Haha thanks mate.
Is this apply to the z8 as well...?
Yes it does.

You’ll have to remind me what I asked for this answer lol
Bro. I thought you were 35!
Come on!!! You can stick around 😂
