Watch this Barn Owl Chick Hatch | Gylfie & Barney | Robert E Fuller
Only one barn owl chick hatched this year out of a clutch of three. I named this baby barn owl Solo. Watch this video for an incredible insight into this owlets earliest days.

ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
Solo
This nest cam follows its story from the moment this owl chick chips out of its eggshell. See Solo unfurl like a seed from the confines of its egg and see how its mother is instantly attentive. Watch as she slowly slides her long, talon-ed foot from under the barn owl chick, careful not to hurt its head.
Failed eggs
This was the only egg to hatch and once the female realises the second chick will not chip out, she discards it. Watch how the male comforts the female when he returns to find the other barn owl chick hasn't survived.
Caring barn owl mum
My cameras afford an insight into how these birds of prey care for their young in a way I've never been able to enjoy before. For instance, watch how the adult female holds her tiny, featherless chick to her breast to keep it warm whilst she feeds it.

I love how the father owl after finding out one egg didn't hatch comforted the mother owl for their loss and bonded with her again.
@ZeiX94 just let him/her be an asshole. Your comments won't change how he/she thinks. It's wasting time
@Jo H pointless comment is pointless
It's very sad when the chick is fully developed when it dies. Unfortunately it does happen. But the father is a very good father. I'm glad they're happy.
@Jo H well someone's got issues
@Jo H WTH do you have a heart

@@aqiloe FYI, there are birds species that will kill their own baby's if for example, one is peculiar / looks different or is smaller then the rest of the baby's. Thanks God, lol
@@b.henriques9871 that's more because they may be sick or something. Or they might not even survive so why waste resources? Because trying to save this little one means your other chicks have a less chance of survival.
@@halfway7690 May, and might. So if your mom kills your brother so it increases the chance of your survival, it's OK? Lmao, most of the time they aren't sick or dying, they are just different, whether it be smaller or odd looking. Doesn't mean they will die.
I never realized just how expressive these birds can be. The way their eyes open up when they’re afraid, yet when they look at each other, it’s like you can sense love there. She lovingly looks at her baby and the dad, and the dad knows when and how to comfort her. I also love that the dad checked underneath the mom to make sure the baby was okay, and while he was doing that, the mother was grooming and comforting him too. Absolutely beautiful creatures
If you have a cat or a dog and look at them closing your eyes, they will interpretate that as a sign of affection too, because to them it means you trust them and are not afraid of being unable to see near them
@@raffaeledivora9517 yeah my cat and i used to always do that with each other :) I do that with my dog too. Animals are such beautiful creatures
My wife and I live near a lake with a lot of trees. Two baby Barn Owls apparently fell out of their nest and landed in our yard. We looked for a nest and couldn't find one. The baby owls fell into our yard one at a time - about 24 hours apart. Each time, our dog had them cornered before we intervened - the owls were screaming and the dog was barking. The owls were so young they could not fly yet. But they sure could scream! We rescued them from our dog and brought them in our house. I dropped a towel on them and they quickly calmed down. We put them in our guest bathroom behind the shower doors in the bathtub. We kept them for 2 weeks. We fed them feeder mice starting with "pinkies" then "fuzzies". Eventually, we upgraded their diet to "hoppers". Just before we let the owls go, we fed them live small adult mice. They gobbled them up. We let the owls go almost a month ago. We thought we'd never see them again. The very next night after releasing them (to our delight) both of them returned to a tree nearest our house. They were squawking like crazy standing side by side, wing to wing. Right after sunset they return to our trees every night and start their hunting activity. Besides the palm trees, they seem to prefer the dome cover that sits on top of our fireplace. Based on the number of pellets we see every day, they're not having any problem finding something to eat. We feel very lucky that we had the opportunity to save those helpless little guys. Apparently, our home has become their home.
@kayemen415 We have a few short clips. I just uploaded one here that shows one of the owls enjoying some small bits of chicken breast. kzhead.info/sun/gKqaeKdpboV3hqc/bejne.html

oh my goodness this brought me to tears, I just realised how beautiful and precious a life is, how we're so lucky to be able to have one and partake in the makings of one. God is truly wonderful
My father always loved owls. He spoke about them in soft, hushed reverent tones. I love them, too. Especially, snowy owls. All owl species are magnificent birds, though. Intelligent and graceful, lovely birds in flight. It is quite poignant to see this owl family together and their care of their young. It is deeply moving to watch the male's behavior with the dead unhatched chick. It is unfortunate I agree that only one chick hatched out of three. This matters toward the continuation of animal and bird species in the wild.
Do you know why just one hatched? I'm really Sad about that other that didn't survived....
@@alguemaleatorio8713 I'm no expert, but based on what they explained and what we saw, the first probably suffocated in the egg or something similar, since it seemed to be pipping at the start (it's egg tooth might not have developed fully) the second likely was just unfertilized. I'm glad the one made it, though. Such gorgeous creatures.
@@NotNaudiz oh :( Yeah, they are beautiful
not to be THAT guy, but owls aren't exactly what you'd call intelligent. they're smart, in their own way, but if we make a list of birds with the most intelligent ones at the top, owls come somewhere near the bottom :/

Mama owl is so gentle.. Like she knows that she could hurt the babies if she was careless..
Yeah, she must know her nails are sharp
No animal is so dumb to risk killing it’s offspring

Aww, the baby is pecking at the food but it isn’t strong enough to tear a piece off. Mom still has to help it. It warms my heart to see it so lively and interested in its food 😍
Momma looks so... sad?.. about the dead/undeveloped egg... and papa with his defined face looks so sad but still proud of the surviving babies.

What beautiful animals...thank you for sharing this incredible event in the life of an owl. I dream of a world where people respect, not exploit and destroy nature.
Why does this barn owl look so cute but has the screech of a demon
Because they're viscious hunters
@@brickboy1177 vicious is a word you use because its what you can relate to. These animals aren't vicious, they're just doing what nature intended for them. Only we can be construed as vicious because its a conscious choice we make to cruelly harm others for our own gratification
@@Corusame 😐
@@Corusame They mean they can be good hunters, If its what nature has them do then of course they'd be vicious towards killing their prey. Not everything someone says you have to turn it back on humans 😐😐
@@Corusame - Wrong. Animals can most certainly be vicious or cruel. When a male lion takes over a pride, he’ll kill any of the existing cubs to put the lionesses into esterus and establish his genes. Bears do the same thing. There’s also the common carnivore trend of half-killing an animal and bringing it to their offspring to learn how to deliver a killing blow. Apes like chimpanzees are especially violent to their species and other animals. Sea otters have a documented history of necrophillia and raping other animals like baby harbor seals. Ducks are also serial rapists, though in the zoology world it’s just called “forced copulation.” One of the biggest lies humans have told themselves is that we’re the only creatures that can be cruel.
Love the experience of watching a little tiny miracle. They are beautiful birds. Thank you 💖
