How does the Sony 100-400mm G Master lens compare to the Sigma 100-400mm lens? In this video we compare the image quality of these two lenses with some side by side landscape photography images taken with the 61MP Sony A7RV. I examine the images in Lightroom and give my thoughts on how the lenses perform. I hope you get some value out of this Sony 100-400mm GM vs Sigma 100-400mm image quality test.

    • @@ZJMichaels Sigma for probably 650€ . A used one. I'm gonna take the other half, if i bought sony i would spend 1600€, to by a wide angel objectiv. Which one can you recommend?

    • Sounds like a pretty sweet deal on the used Sigma. I'd probably go with that and see how you like it. If you decide it's not for you, you could always sell it and probably get most (or maybe all) of your money back

    • @@ZJMichaels Sony GM any day. A bit pricy/expensive but worth it after seeing the meta data video of yours 🙂

  • Thanks for your video. Another interesting comparison would be the Sony 100-400 GM vs the Tamron 50-400mm. Any plans to do a comparison review of those two lenses?

    • That’s a good idea. I haven’t used the Tamron 50-400mm before… will have to check it out sometime

  • Awesome video, thanks for doing this. Would consider the sigma if it was strictly for social media however that sharpness on the g master is night and day especially for printing!

  • Thank you for your review. I am certainly interested on one of these lenses. This review has been very helpful. However, the 200% comparisons at 61MP are interesting. It's the equivalent to making a 15 feet by 10 feet print (yes feet) at 300 dpi and viewing it from a distance of 11 inches away, and then concluding there is a minor difference in sharpness. In the real world for an uncropped print the sharpness of both lenses are absolutely identical - in that is is impossible to see the difference. The resolution of the human eye is 1 arc-minute. So, at 4 feet away from the image the human eye can't resolve better than 72 dpi (that's 0.5 MP in a 12x8 inch print at 4 feet). Any additional detail in the 61MP image file or in the the 8.6 MP print is too small to be seen from 4 feet away. But it does show the amazing amount of detail that modern cameras can resolve and store in their files..

  • would sigma perform any better at f11, since it has slower aperture, maybe f11 from f6.3 would be top sharpness, like 5.6 to 8 for sony

  • Great video. Is the GM $1500 sharper? The price difference is so huge it’s almost not fair to compare these two. Until Sigma makes an Art version of this lens, then we are just comparing a flagship lens to a budget lens. At $900 this Sigma is a hell of a value.

    • Thanks. Yeah the Sigma is definitely great value for the money, no doubt. Whether or not the GM is worth the extra cost really just depends on one's personal preferences, needs, and budget. I do hope Sony will come out with a version 2 of the 100-400GM at some point... improve the image quality and reduce size a bit, and maybe add some macro capability like they did with the 70-200 f/4 version 2 lens

    • I think anything in the same zoom range is worth a comparison. In my opinion, it keeps the larger companies in check with value. Personally, wouldn’t invest over $1,500 unless you plan on blowing these up large. You can fix a majority of the differences in post processing.

    • @@ZJMichaels the shiny G is definitely of value. I’m guilty of it. I bought a 24-70GM and not a Sigma 24-70 even though the Sigma is sharper. I wanted a native lens with that shiny G. There’s also the FPS cap on aftermarket lenses on the newest Sony cameras too.

  • The G-Master lens has more resolving power and micro contrast and better colour, the colour doesn't matter if you shoot raw, but that is to be expected. On the web they're both OK but printing large will show quite a difference. It actually looks like the shot @ 200mm is slightly out of focus with the Sony shot. Either that or the Sigma shows its strongest and the Sony its weakest at 200mm???
