Locksmith ripoffs: Hidden camera investigation (Marketplace)
Who do you call when you're locked out of your home? A locksmith. But industry experts tell us some of them are duping customers with the promise of a quick and cheap fix, only to end up ripping you off. CBC Marketplace uncovers a network of fake local business locations and fake five-star reviews cluttering Google Maps in the Greater Toronto Area.
We also rig up a house with hidden cameras to test locksmiths advertising their services online, and expose how some companies use low prices, fake names, fake addresses and fake reviews to lure you in. Google says it is now auditing every locksmith listing in Canada following our investigation.

I got locked out of my house once years ago. I looked around the street, made sure no one was watching, and kicked the door in. Was easier than I expected.

Its not a bad thing at all. I dont care what google says. Making a big deal out of this tainted the show. The guy was a professional, and treated her right. Then they turn around and get on him for asking for a review.

I think it was less about teaching the locksmith a lesson than recovering the charges incurred by the nice elderly lady that "needed" her lock drilled out. Video cameras are changing the world, certainly not fast enough or far enough but hopefully making a difference.

The dude that charged 80 plus a good review is absolutely reasonable! I get that it's against "guidelines" but come on. It seems like you're looking for something because it wouldn't be a good story without so meat behind it.
if you do what is right to begin with then to ask for compensation after not charging someone is considered by me to be a good story told. Personally I would do a lot of jobs free to get a good review.

I locked myself out my house and I ended up just smashing the back door window. I am in the UK and if I had called out a locksmith it would have cost me a fortune. It cost me £40 to have the glass replaced.

I think so when it comes to your home break in and it will be much cheaper to fix. But that would be common sense and some have so much money and have never broken into anything. Having a locksmith drill out your tumbler is in theory just breaking in.

There are crooks like this in every industry, taking advantage of people know dont know better or who are desperate. Most of these companies get away with it because there's no agency to enforce standards and business practice. Atleast where i live. From a moral perspective I wouldnt ever be able to do this to someone and can't believe these people actually sleep at night.
I remember when I was 10 years old my mom got locked out of her bedroom, and called a locksmith after trying to figure it out herself. It took them an hour or two to come, and in that time my 10 year old self managed to pick the lock with a hairpin and a match stick. Even after doing the whole thing myself, my mom called them to cancel the call but they showed up at our house and she had to pay him 80$ for just coming there and not having to do anything. It was ridiculous. We found him in the yellow pages, if only online reviews were as popular back then hopefully we could have avoided such scammers.

I know nothing about locks but as soon as a I saw that toolbox for setting the lock I knew it was more art than science and it's clear how much time and work goes into becoming a locksmith. Holy moly that's an impressive array of tools/pieces.

Wouldnt you be? Locksmithing is a complex art, think of it like a watch maker. Very small moving parts that work together to deliver the same results consistently. Just like how you if your watch doesnt work it can throw off your whole day same is true for a lock. The difference is with lock picking you can brute force it and replace it. So this very delicate machine that he built to make it easy to fix was literally completely destroyed by a hack with a drill and a 20$ mass produced lock and charged more than he would to rebuild it.

I experienced a very similar thing when I needed one of my car windows replaced (which could be done in my driveway). I called several "local" places to get a price quote ... and soon noticed that the same 3 or 4 people were answering the phone, even though the name and phone number of the businesses were different.
you can tell that she was talking to call centers. they didn't even use proper english. "...to come outside." "what? who are you? where are you?" -that's what she should have said.
I was locked out on Christmas Eve last year and this exactly happened to me too. He looked at the lock and said it was unpickable and drilled it out for $400.

@@upinalaska49 if you drill it properly. The only thing you have to replace is the cylinder. And they are a dime a dozen in the locksmith industry. I rarely drill, but when I do. I replace the cylinder for free and pin it up to the persons original key so it's like new.

I had a blocked toilet once and called a plumber. They said it would be £45 call out. Nice man, he tried with a plunger, failed, and then started to tell me the different machines they had. This one is £250, this one is £350. These prices were nearly 20 years ago. I made it quite clear I didn't have that kind of cash and had expected to pay just the £45 call out, which I had ready for him. I think he felt genuinely sorry for me and questioned his life choices. He said "Well... Sometimes you can get it unblocked just by standing on a chair with a bucket of water and throwing it into the toilet in one go." It worked. I thanked him profusely, and he knew and I knew and we both knew that we both knew that this was a scam that he was not wanting to do that night. I was genuinely grateful to that man for showing me he did have a heart. It's tough when you're trying to earn a living and your company expects you to be more ruthless than you really are.

I was a locksmith for 12 years and I never ripped off a client. I always picked a lock and would only drill it after spending time trying to pick it. To be fair, there are locks that are practically impossible to pick unless you have a specially made lockpick such as the locksmith lawyer.

@Free1c0nic The kinds of locks i see used in NA atleast if going by youtube videos and TV shows are so incredibly low quality it amazes me people even bother having them. Where I'm from most locks are Way more complex and orders of magnitude harder to pick. Abloys are the minimum standard used by nearly everyone, the ones seen here would perhaps qualify for a cheap bike lock.

I am the shittiest of lockpickers and I've not met a deadbolt in the US that takes more than 15 seconds to 1 minute tops... a minute if I have to spp it... generally shorter for a rake...
Obviously a joke. Jokes are one of the con artist's greatest weapons. They also have a high success rate when you get pulled over which is why I've talked my way out of every ticket but one minor one. To be fair the one I got was for dead stickers but the cop that wrote it dropped the larger speeding ticket because I made him laugh.

I’m from South Africa and I guess these locksmiths are mostly scammers all around the globe. The prices are crazy. I was charged an arm and a leg. I was unhappy with the service. Great investigation 👍🏼

its the norm if they see you in a small low rent building they'll try and get you for less, but nine times out of ten you're going to have to pay for a new lock. Its crazy the amount of locksmiths who don't pick locks. In montreal they've had this reputation for a long time.

As a locksmith it hurts us to see that these call centers are pulling volume away from real locksmiths that have been doing it for decades. Imagine going to eat dinner and you pick another restaurant from two because one offers a cheaper steak dinner l, afterwards they bring you the bill and its 3x what you were told and the steak tasted like shoe leather. That is exactly what these guys do. Adding a middleman to a business that doesn't need one and hiring unexperienced people to trick people who are desperate

As a professional and licensed craftsman the disappointment in his face is far to relatable. The things I’ve seen people do and charge outrageous amounts of money for in the 20+ years I’ve been doing my trade is just unbelievable. You do take it personal.

He didn't ask for a review, he required it for a discount to be applied. Guarantee the company has him do that, so as a person I agree he seems like a good honest dude

@@leathercheerio1 He is a lawyer, if he want he knows how to go even to the last ip and actualy show proof to court its their company, even thru they may hide behind many proxies, question is: Is it worth it?
The most he can do is get that google account shutdown... nothing else and nothing to the locksmith company.
At end of the day due the amount of false reviews compared to real reviews he can go after the company claiming they are creating and or paying someone to create a large amount of false reviews and stealing people’s identities as they did with his picture and address. And because of the sheer amount of stolen identities such as his that the company paid for in one way or another to attract more business he is suing in part for knowingly stealing his identity and using it for financial gain. And the only question really then is after he contacts law enforcement for identity theft, should he file a large lawsuit for every stolen identity and also what amount of money is he filing suit for.
Can I just say how devoted the locksmith seems? I like that.
Here in England we have the same problem. My mom once called a ‘locksmith’ to come to her 2nd property and the guy who pitched up looked like a professional burglar. He kicked the door open and still charged my mom. He never picked the lock or drilled anything HE KICKED THE DOOR OPEN.

It's a sham. LSDA 5 pin are a good residential and light commercial locks.The smith didn't know that the pins had been replaced. In factory condition, it likely wouldn't have been worth his time.

@@andyh7537 yes but even sliding a pick through he should be able to tell its been altered, also he is supposed to be a lock Smith... Factory made locks should be is specialty. Also pick guns exist. If you're not concerned with damaging the lock then you can try one.
I just saw your show on locksmiths. I decided to google map West Island Montreal and 80% of them listing their addresses are private homes or odd places. Few of them where actually a real locksmith location. The ones in question had all 5 star reviews a couple had one star. One reply to the one star blamed the customer saying he phoned around to much

Just had to pay a guys 50$ show up fee. He tried charging a 80$ cancelation fee. Only reason I had him come is because he said he wouldn't have to drill the lock. When he showed up he said he needed to drill the lock. For 350$. I paid him 50$ and grabbed my drill.
That attorney was like thanks for the free money lol

It’s a VERY common practice in the locksmith, tow truck, handyman, lawncare, delivery restaurant, and many other industries, to act as a middleman or have several DBAs. I also find it misleading and a little deceptive, but it’s completely legal, widespread, and growing. By the way, I live in Texas so it’s not a local phenomenon. Many of these companies fail because they don’t effectively “vet” their subcontractors. Others are successful and do good work.
30 yrs ago a locksmith charged us £260.00 we were gulable, we were young and had a small child and two other children, we didn't know what to do then about it, but paid it, so greatful this programme has come up to make people aware.

Bruh to fix a window I could easily fit through at my house was projected at $250 - $370 or so depending on the window I wanted. I don't even need a window lmao I was just so mad that I needed to prove it for myself that would indeed be cheaper.
