Why would anyone buy one of those spincast reels?

  • I am a serious fisherman, and I have used my Zebco 33 Classic, Zebco 44 Classic triggerspin, and my Zebco UL4 (mini)triggerspin for trout since new in the early 1980's. Never a problem. They all cast across the county and I can hit the spot with the FeatherTouch brake. They're not the fastest retrieve, but I've never lost a fish because of that. I've owned and still own a lot of spinning reels, but these always go into the boat because they get kicked around and there are no tangles. I'm there to fight fish, not the tackle. They're not just for kids.

    • There is a reason that these reels have survived. They just plain work. Adjusted for the rate of inflation, the old zebco 33 would cost over two hundred dollars today. They were made like a fine watch and performed equally well.

      @hillbilly4christ638@hillbilly4christ63810 ай бұрын
    • @@hillbilly4christ638 Well now, I wouldn't put them in the category of a fine watch, but they were defintely workmanlike and utilitarian. Mine have survived alot of rough handling in a narrow canoe for decades whereas I put the old Mitchell's and other spinners in a rack to keep from wrecking them.

    • I got a quick question, im new to fishing in my later years and i bought a spincast reel cause they said it was great for learning, my question is ,is it normal for the line to be all wavy and squiggly after you cast it and also when reeling it in?

      @battlefox8460@battlefox84608 ай бұрын
    • @@battlefox8460ya that happens with them some its alright. Its mostly the line memory.

      @brianfitch5469@brianfitch54697 ай бұрын
    • @@battlefox8460that will happen with any reel whether it’s a baitcaster, an open face, or a spin cast. Like the comment above stated it comes down to line memory. Line memory has a lot to do with the quality of line that is used. In all honesty, when buying a spin cast they’re typically spooled with lower grade line resulting in more line memory resulting in the curls you’re noticing. If you were to spool it with higher grade line it would be less of a problem. If you’re not trying get deep into all the specifics I would recommend looking up a video or two on “fishing line management” tips to keep these curls from affecting you’re overall fishing time. In the long run I think you’d be satisfied with an open face(spinning reel). They seem complicated at first but they’re a lot of fun. I recently picked my old spin cast up to have some nostalgia and I can’t lie it was majorly fun, but in terms of efficiency and fun the spinning reel is right there too. Good luck and tight lines mate.

  • I've caught more fish on my old Zebco T11 trigger reel on an Ugly Stik 4'6" ultralight rod than any other combination I own, like by a factor of ten. It always works, casts a mile, and makes a bluegill feel like a humpback whale. I've caught catfish, big bass, even a little stingray on it. It never lets me down.

  • I'm a serious fisherman but I have arthritis and neuropathy in my hands and I can't cast a spinning or baitcaster like I used to. But last week I used an old 50 cent yard sale find Southbend fishing pal instead of my higher end spincasts on a trip to show my buddy its not all about the gear or what you spend on it. I caught 36 eating sized bluegill, 50 little ones for baiting the catfish jugs, 3 nice smallmouth, 2 nice largemouth, and a 26 inch channel cat on that little pole with redworms, nightcrawlers and plain Aberdeen hooks. He didn’t do as well with his fancy spinning rig and baitcaster plus a bunch of lures. Kick a spincaster all you like but they put meat on the table. Tomorrow I'm cutting me a cane pole and let it start curing just to show him how cheap and primitive I can go and outfish him. How about we all just use what we want instead of kicking someone else's gear?

It is good for both ripping baits with its 5.1:1 gear ratio, but is also fantastic for finesse fishing with light tackle, something baitcasters don’t particularly excel at.

The key to getting beginners interested in fishing is to make everything as easy as possible. Then as they get older they can gravitate towards more complex spinning, fly and bait casting reels.....

  • I’m a tournament angler. For 45 years I never have used normal spinning reels that hang underneath like the pros. I use a spin caster only. Spin casters and bait casters. Everybody Stops laughing when I win the tournament. Then I laugh all the way home. I can do things with my spin caster that absolutely cannot be done with a regular spinning reel or a big caster. There’s way more to it than just the ability to skip. It’s about being able to hold it like a Champaign glass and then you can keep the line in between your fingers. I feel the bite with my fingers, not the handle of the rod. I can wiggle my bait by moving just my fingers and no rod movement, with just one hand.. When my finesse Texas rig nearly hits the water i can feather the last 6 inches with my fingers on the line, then I can let it drop with absolutely zero forward pendulum activity, often it travels away from me underneath the bush. If I did the same with the bait caster it would pendulum down even just a few centimeters forward towards me instead. I only use pistol grips so I can keep the real close to my body, I pitch it underhand like a softball pitcher. I can hit any mark with zero splash, skip a 4 inch Senko 20 skips flat across the surface…Oh the dropshot on a spin caster…. just getting started, see you at the weigh in.

  • Spinning reels and baitcasters are NOT more reliable than an old push button zebco. I have two push button zebco reels, and I’ve had them both since I was probably 6 years old, I’ve never had any problems with them or had one break. They’re amazing and definitely the most reliable reels

  • Fish don't give a shit which reel you use. A plastic bottle wrapped in fishing line will do the job.

  • If you want to cast well then spin reels are no good. If you have limited time and want it to work well without issue then casting reels are out of the question. Spin and casting reels are just a cash grab to me. Only fish of worth around me are bass. No have boat. Must use spincast, it is not an option. Have a lp casting reel. Even properly calibrated or extra loose... it yet fails to cast as far as the spin cast reels. And the spool spins so easily. It's just for looking professional. Secretly spincast is professional angler's best tool. Nobody casts farther than I do. I get all the far cast compliments

  • sorry but if you're paying 60 for a spin cast that isn't a larger size just get a baitcaster

  • These short videos are difficult to reply to. Talk to any actual fisherman who is actually catching fish - They all own at least 2 Zebco reels.

  • I can’t with them, the remind me of the days where I’d sit and fish with bait and not catch crap, and they make horrible noises and feel terrible. That being said the best use is for catfish or bait fishing

  • English names for the reels are really stupid Translated from Finnish A spinning reel is an open reel and a spin reel is a closed reel You can probably see why they would have names like that
