In this Zebco Bullet review, I deep-dive into my 5-month adventure with Zebco's fastest spincast ever made. With one design flaw, this all-metal spincast reel is just shy of perfection. Thanks for stopping by, please use the info provided below to view shopping and technical information.

Zebco Bullet Info (From Zebco's Website):
www.zebco.com/bullet-zb3-10-bx3
"Zebco, the most recognized brand in fishing, has introduced the fastest version ever of the tangle-free reel they made famous. Appropriately named Bullet - it’s faster than all spincast reels, and even faster than 6.1:1 baitcasting reels, and a size 20 spinning reel. Geared at 5.1:1, Bullet picks up an unprecedented 29.6” of line with each revolution of the handle - a handle that’s padded with unique-feeling new GripEm™ All Weather Handle Knobs."

    • It's like everything, TV, internet, and magazines-(years back maybe) tell everyone what to use, what's best. Maybe if Zebco heavily sponsored a fishing show, you'd see the "pros" using and bragging up Zebco equipment as the best stuff to get the fish. Where I live, lot of fishermen. Quite a few not doing it legally, but they're the ones pushing the hardest bush to get into hidden trout brooks n streams. Even though they're flipping the bird to a fishing license and staying with the bag limit, they want fish. Lots of fish. And they want to pay as little to get em. You know what they use, what always works. Those cheap ass rod combo's at Canadian Tire, the ones where the whole rod n reel is in the sealed plastic. The trout spinners are bought at the gas station for a $1.86 each. Dig the worms, and then git-er-done! Filling a plastic Save-Easy bag faster then the game wardens can catch em, faster then the pros and their high end nonsense can work on a show. I don't fish or hunt illegally. Not worth the fines, losing my stuff, jail, whatever. But I noticed growing up what "gets it done" pushing out to those hidden brooks n streams through dense brush, bogs, and muskeg. A simple cheap solid bush rod, and a spin cast reel, with cheap gas station spinners n worms. My 1983 Zebco kids model still works, but I wanted something newer n nicer. I bought a Bullet. Absolutely love it. Just don't bust the plastic button.

  • 40 combos, but I beat my 3 Bullets to death for 3 years before ever deciding to clean them, which is why I found your vids only now. 8 rods in the boat at all times, including 2 Bullets but 90 percent of my bass fishing accomplished with those Zebcos. Two double digits landed with 12lb fluorocarbon. Want to buy more, but only if one fails, which hasn't happened yet. Thanks for the cleaning videos.

  • As a kid in the 50’s who struggled with “bird nests” in my baitcasters, I was thrilled when Johnson reels came out with the nearly all metal Century and Citation. They were dependable, user friendly, and easy to clean. Later on I liked the Daiwa Goldcast series. I pretty much snubbed Zebco reels even though the super cheap 202 and the higher quality 33 were functional and would serve a lot of fishing applications. However, when Zebco came out with their quality, pricey, and good looking Omega Series, I was hooked. Don’t have a Bullet, but I’ll definitely check it out.

  • I agree, it is puzzling why there isn't a better selection of high quality spincast reels. They are particularly handy for fresh water kayak fishing where messing with line issues is a real hassle in the limited space of a kayak and speed of the cast retrieve cast cycle is a real asset.

  • I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well kzhead.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

When I say unexpected I mean when I see a lake I haven't been able to get to come accessible I jump out of my car with my small tackle box and fast 6foot rod and fish an hour or an hour and a half of time away just to get a thrill and that is shore fishing !!! You hit the nail on the head !!! I now keep a backup thumb button and it's not hard to replace once you've done it !!!!!

I caught a 27lb flatty and a 34lb blue with ease the first week i had it and it has 30lb of drag...ON A SPINCAST!!! and a buddy of mine is a bass fisherman and he literally hung up his baitcasters and uses bullets mainly due to their retrieval rate.

    • @JB Outdoors I've had mine for over a year. Zebco's have always casted good but the bullets retrieve is just as smooth and quiet as my abu garcia ambassador. My complaints are that it'll make about any rod combo very nose heavy so it makes it seem even heavier. I do not like the rubber button and it tends to slide around if your thumb isn't centered on it when casting. I've been experimenting with an old 5'6 rod with heavy guides and taped a 2oz weight to the butt to help counter balance the combo. I'd really like to try a graphite 5'6 rod with micro guides to get the nose weight as light as possible before counterbalancing. The 5'6 rod I've had it on lately would still take nearly 4oz taped to the butt to balance the combo lol

    • @@nashvilleoutlaw This reel is perfectly matched with a medium/heavy bass rod 7ft or longer or a Salmon rod. You should go for the Omega Pro ZO2 if you intend to use a high end spincast reel on a short rod. It is significantly smaller, much lighter and just as strong.

  • Really great abrasion resistance and though I've never put the Big Game line kzhead.infoUgkxQ4x31pJVpClzhxzNFeILZYTW7Xbs7ZIF (any poundage) through an official test it always seems to break well above rated poundage. This line stretches a very good amount before it breaks and does well in saltwater too. Not the best line for a spinning reel in my opinion, especially if you're planning on using it for lures only due to it having a bit of memory but still a great line whether filling a spool, using as top shot or strictly for leader line. I've bought a bunch of Big game line in the past and plan on continuing to do so in the future.

  • Thanks for the review of the Zebco Bullet. So glad to see other fishermen who are promoting the Zebco Bullet reels. In the last 6-7 years I have learned to love Zebco reels, particularly the upper end models like the Omega, Omega Pro, Bullet and the 33s, like the Platinum. I have learned that the modern Zebco 33s, 33 Max, 808, 888s can all be super tuned by replacing plastic bushings with a stainless steel ball bearing. It has allowed me to upgrade many reels making them that much better. This past week, I fought a 36-38 inch 16-20 pound steel head on the Salmon River with my Zebco 33 Max Black which I had super tuned. It performed very well for both casting with 20 pound test or back bouncing a Tadpolly. You can even buy the AR bearing and add that, if you want, on many of them. I need to check out your other fishing videos. Thank you!

    • Thanks for stopping by and sharing boss! Zebco reels don't get the respect they deserve and are plenty capable of catching trophy fish. Fighting a steelhead with a Zebco would be a dream. I really like the whole "super-tuned" Zebco concept. I'll have to try it out! I think it would be cool to upgrade one of the reels with ceramic bearings....maybe the 808 and do some serious offshore fishing with it.

  • Zebco has a few high end spincasting reels actually the Zebco 33 can handle up to 12 lb monofilament line, the Zebco 808 can handle up to 20 lb monofilament line, the Zebco 888 can handle up to 30 lb monofilament line, and the Zebco big cat XT can also handle up to 30 lb monofilament line. And also all of those spincasting reels I mentioned have all mental internal gears so they are built to last the long haul and honestly I think the only reason people think spincasting reels are for kids is because spincasting reels used to only be used on ultralight setups but that really isn't the case anymore. I have been fishing for 25 years of my life and I still to this day prefer spincasting reels and monofilament line and recently I caught a huge lake sturgeon on my Zebco 888 with 30 lb monofilament line also the Zebco spincasting combos are prespooled with Zebco Cajun line which is their higher end line.

Release is not immediate like on other reels. Pressing the button takes time and my release is always late and it flies to the left. Also this thing is tiny but weighs almost 1 pound. Weight is absolutely shocking. The spool cap didnt need to be metal maybe. Other than that i actually like it and its very smooth like u said. I just dont know why i cant learn to cast it. • Now if they made this in an "underspin" configuration it would be perfect. I prefer the ergonomics of the spinning rod with the reel under the rod, but I prefer the simplicity of the spincast reel, particularly if you are driving a boat and fishing. Zebco had a real good underspin reel in their old 33 Model series but in their wisdom discontinued it. Really like the interchangeable reel spools!

  • I agree. I've had a few spin reels but always just grab a Zebco 33, lol. I just like the ease of the spincaster. I've caught hundreds of fish on the cheap Zebco's. Some of my friends are finally into fishing and have boats and only use baitcasters. I get it but I'm a Zebco guy. They laugh at me too, lol. I'm about to buy a Zebco Bullet. I'm registered for a tournament here on Guntersville Lake. If you're listening Zebco start helping some of us ole school, "Push Button," fisherman out. Give us something to brag about to the baitcaster crowd! Send me some tackle to sample too and I will make content with reviews.

  • Zebco probably isn’t making a “killing” selling cheap combos at Walmart. Walmart procurement and “rolling back prices” is why Zebco had to move manufacturing to China. That means razor thin margins. I grew up on “cheap” Zebco and Shakespeare rods and reels. One of my favorite combos to this day is a cheap (made in USA reel - the rod doesn’t say) 404 combo I bought in about 1993. I have other nicer rigs but I keep going back to the old 404. Just bought a like new 30 year old Made in USA reel just like it on EBay to have for when mine won’t work anymore, if that ever comes.

  • Yes, great evaluation. I use spincast reels 90% now, after decades of using every kind of spinning, bait casting and level wind. I use spincast reels only on pistol-grip handled rods; if the fish are heavier, I double-hand (left-hand handled reels) the forward and rear grips when working a fish (switch hands on the grips).

  • I bought one of these last year and it's been a great reel. Except for yesterday. I find my trout spots using google earth, and I was involved in a pretty substantial hike to get to one- tangled, swampy terrain about 3 kilometers in, one of these places where you're really hoping it's gonna be worth the work. I get to the first pool and it looks awesome: deep undercut banks, beaver dam on the outflow, everything's telling me this place holds trout. So I go to make my first cast, and the handle comes off in my hand. Somewhere along the way I'd lost the crank rod nut and cap screw on the opposite side of the reel, where you'd put the handle to reverse direction. I was lucky I hadn't lost the handle as well. Compounding that frustration, Zebco's website doesn't have a page where you can just order the parts- you have to call or send in an email to describe what you need, and hope somebody gets back to you. I sent in my parts request yesterday, so we'll see where that goes. If you have one of these reels and you don't plan to reverse direction of the reel, my advice is to put loctite on the crank rod nut and cap screw or you could find yourself in a fix like I was in yesterday, and worse, you might lose the handle too. Depending on how Zebco handles this situation, I'd buy another one of these reels for my backup kit.

Kind of annoyed by 9 year old "bassmasters" with youtube channels calling $200 reels "budget friendly" because their mommy bought it for them. Ok, I'll calm down now. Anyways, glad you took that bullet through some thorough testing!

    • Thanks for stopping by. Glad to hear your reel is working out. I agree, Zebco needs to expand and improve on the Bullet/Omega Pro line. Basically, they need to give more attention to the serious angler. They’re probably making a killing off the masses who buy a couple combo rigs and fish twice a year.

      @CastFromTheHip@CastFromTheHip4 жыл бұрын
    • Brian I agree they need to do some weight reduction... probably should have called it "The Mortar Shell" instead lol. But it's so bad out of balance tapping 2-4oz to the butt of your rod actually makes it seem lighter and easier to cast 1 handed.

  • i been using the bullets for about a year now for bass fishing and i use 40 lb braid. Not much problem casting but my line started to break right at the reel. After much investigation i found the braided line was actually cutting a grove in the aluminum pick up spool and eventually cutting my line. If using a bait that causes a constant heavy drag on the retrieve ( spinner or crank bait) it will eventually cut into the spool if using an abrasive braided line. This would be an easy fix for zebco engineers by putting a stainless steel lip around the spool for the line to drag across. I also had some issues with the oscillating spool linkage failing.

    @ritchiemoss3596@ritchiemoss35963 жыл бұрын
    • I had the exact same problem with my bullet but never used braid, only mono. I wish I'd taken a photo to send to Zebco, but my spool had a groove worn into it directly above both the pickups. It was really messing with line release and was also damaging the line. Brand new with a 3.5 Hildebrandt willow blade on the line (very light, only a few grams), you'd press the release and it would fall right to the floor. With the damaged spool, you press the release and it would just hang there. I sanded the crap out of the spool, took about an hour to get both sides smooth enough for clean line release. So I agree 100%- the spool should be made of stainless- I could care less if it weighs a bit more. My reel is only a couple years old and shouldn't have major wear damage. Almost all my fishing is light spinnerbait in streams and rivers. One other noted flaw was the cap for the reversible handle- that fell out one day and made the reel useless, with the handle basically falling off. Of course I was about 2 km into a river hike when that happened. My advice there is, if you don't plan to reverse the handle, pull that cap and reinstall with a dab of threadlock.

  • The 808 and the 888 are as big as they get. But you do bring up a good point, I think it would be a good idea if they enlarged their spincast reels ,the companies that build the baitcasters make perty good size, I know that some of the internal parts are some type hard plastic, but they might do better if they were machined internal parts, it might be that they want to keep costs down

    @wayneeden98@wayneeden987 ай бұрын
  • Check your spinnerhead, the braid has cut into one of mine. Maybe a smoother braid like Slick 8 would have been a better choice than conventional braid. Unfortunately it’s about $40 for the part, best just to stick to the Cajun mono line it comes loaded with. Great review again!

    • Thanks for sharing boss, I'll keep that in mind for my future spincast reviews. I should inform people that there are reports that the braid can damage the reels. I agree, its best to run mono in these reels. I usually just run braid for the review process. Have a happy New Year!
