When i was a kid and wanted an electronic organ, we went to a Yamaha store to look for one. The sales associate gave my mom a disdainful look and walked away, not wanting to give us the time of his day. My mom angrily then went to the kawaii store. The sales lady was so attentive and helpful to us, that my mom made the purchase for a $4,500usd equivalent organ that same day in cash. And that was in 1979 when $4,500 was a lot then.

I live in a 2-bedroom apartment that cost about a million dollars - in the West it would sell for less than a fifth of the price. If you think about it, everything in Singapore is much more expensive than in America. So for the people in Crazy Rich Asians to live such a lifestyle means that they are likely multibillionaires. If I had to guess, I would say that they would be worth perhaps 30 - 50 billion dollars.

You can be a young person from a wealthy family, e.g. your great great great grandparents made a fortune and it has been passed down for generations (Old Money). Or you can be an older person who recently acquired wealth (New Money).

  • Old money have lived and managed to retain their wealth through a period of upheavals, revolutions, social instability and other shenanigans. They'd learn to wise up and hide themselves among the masses rather than becoming a target of social jealousy-based wrath and ended up being hung in public and have their estates ransacked.

    @thewanderingrey8830@thewanderingrey88305 жыл бұрын
    • It will not last long. The more they hide, the more risky that some poor dudes with Genghis Khan competence seriously become ambitious. There are so many examples in history such tragedies happened, which there is almost no one of such wealthy family survived to this day. The Mongol conquest was a prime example of largest plunder and destruction of wealthy classes in human history. Millions of people in Middle East, China and Eastern Europe perished and we never even knew their names. The conquest singlehandedly reshaped the landscape of human capital and wealth. There are fortunate, dirt poor survivors fleeing to Africa, Western Europe and India to eventually make a fortune. The optimal path of smart wealthy families is to make themselves popular in national consciousness of the masses. Donations, economic investments, public programs,... These efforts make themselves radiant among everyone to the point of adoration and worship. This was how ancestors of rulers and nobles in the ancient times did. They built a name and distributed their wealth among the masses, which these people willingly to fight and stand up for them. These wealthy people became kings, politicians, rulers and khans. Thus, they maintained a long line of descendants and made their name immortal in the history books. They simply redistribute their wealth to the societies and earned respect. This is how a truly wealthy, smart family would do.

  • I work at one of the largest construction company in my country and had the privilege to work with the daughter of the owner. She was in training on the how-to’s of management. She always brought her own lunch at work which were mostly left over foods from her home, commutes daily to work. Wears plain work clothes, doesn’t wear makeup, no jewelries nor watch. An old iPhone 6 with cracked screen. Mind you, her family’s assets are worth $7 billion. She’s a down to earth person that when I attended our company’s annual xmas party, was surprised that she remembers my name when I came across her.

  • Not trying to brag, but my family has been running a business since my great-great-grandparents. We are a Chinese family and currently live in Singapore. Despite having enough money to buy expensive clothes or shoes to wear every day, my family including me loves to buy on-sale (not designer) things because since my family started a business, the knowledge of saving while enjoying is passed down to us. My family also taught me how to be humble and always be private- no one in our family has public social media most of my relatives don’t even have social media. Also, my parents, especially my mom, love to spend her money on expensive plates like saint louis, wedgewood imperial, baccarat crystal, etc. than on designer clothes while my dad spends his money most on travels and his passion for animals. And I’m saying this to remind everyone that rich asian are not similar to your typical rich people you’ve seen on hollywood because I experience bullying when I was in highschool (Private school) saying I’m not rich and doesn’t belong in the prestigious school- coming from a kid of a celebrity who wears clothes with designer logo in it from head to toe but can’t even afford to pay the tuition fee of the school. 😂

  • as I've gotten older, I realized that the more money you have, the more power you think you have obtained, you become more of what you are, your insecurities that you keep hidden from others become more relevant, you can become more selfish or selfless depending on your morals and beliefs, you don't have to be raised a certain way to become those things, it's something that you teach yourself from your experiences, you can either allow good or bad experiences tear you down, or build you up, its a confusing cycle, so never judge someone by how much money they have, rather let your judgement be based on how they treat the ones around them.

  • Being an Asian and having rich friends, this movie is quite a spot on. Yet, instead of being over the top, I could said that the rich part was really tone down. I could say that rich people around me do almost half of the things portrayed in the movie and they are not even crazy rich. That’s just showed how much we will splurge if we want to. And no, I am not rich thus I can relate about the social life in the movie. I know my friends are sincere when they said I am their friend yet I knew that the only reason their parents are ok with me being their friend is because I scored well in academic and a top scorer. Not blaming anyone yet that is the reality. Thus, KUDOS to Crazy Rich Asian’s team for this marvellous movie.
