2.0L Turbo AMG Swapped 190E Hits the Dyno & Race Track for the First Time!
►Nearly 12 months after picking up the donor 190E, the Golden Era Project has finally made it to the FCP Euro Proving Grounds at Lime Rock Park. A catastrophe was avoided on the dyno thanks to some quick reactions, and the junkyard engine withstood the abuse to deliver healthy horsepower. Now with the car fully assembled, it's time to give the 190E 2.0-16 its first thorough shake-down.
Putting the car through its paces will illuminate any shortcomings and give Nate a list of components that need further work following the day on the track. The shakedown is a day dedicated to dialing in the car. But it's also a time to reflect on what was accomplished. It's been a long journey, but everything done to the car has led the FCP Euro team to this moment. Welcome to the season (series?) finale of the Golden Era Project.

I had a stock 190e and it was one of my favorite cars. It was so fun to drive up the canyons and did everything I asked.
The narrator's voice is such a classic European documentary type of voice
Sounds like Barack Obama 😅
sounds like a cross between Mike Rowe and the narrator from The Sandlot
Haha - thats Alan, he works in our catalog department here!
Sounds like Ed Bolian
ngl he sounds like a guy that narrated How It’s Made video 😂
Man, If i were rich, id be like, "I have to have THAT car"! So good!
Glad you dig it!
Watching Nate is like watching myself; so many similarities.
Never forget: There was once a real durable and reliable straight six in it. With loads of potential.
they did an amazing job... but i thought the same as you :)
The engine from A45 mercedes is plenty for gutted car like this in my opinion. The 350whp or whatever it made on the dyno seems like it's enough to go fast and have fun while not being scared of dying 😅 remember no ABS, traction control, power steering and very light must feel raw asf 😂
Yeah I thought the same That 2.6 I6 with a big turbo has a lot of potential!!!
The engine seems a bit too smoky to be normal imo; could it the be turbo that needs a refresh, or the fact that originally the engine was mounted transversely and the PCV system is acting up with the different direction the G forces are acting on it, idk; don't think it's the engine tho. Maybe look more into the pcv system and build a catch-can that is venting to atmosphere?
it looks quite blue out the back.....
We figured it out short after - the vacuum pump was pulling too much air into the engine and over pressurizing the crankcase. This was because we don't have a brake booster on the car. Once we regulated the flow it went away!
@@fcpeuro-media Proper sick to have received a reply and news from you. And good to know it wasn't anything major causing headaches; honestly props to the whole team and everyone involved, the build turned out a beast, dope!🔥💪🏼 Straight cut gears and dog engagement would have been the ice on the cake, Bmw E46 vibes, but I can't even imagine how much it would have cost and the time required to build a one-off set, so don't mind me and this too much😂
@@fcpeuro-media - Very cool... somehow oil was getting into combustion chamber... and that would certainly do it (I am 3 years into fixing oil problems on my own project car ;))
@@ambrosettisimone7104 I wonder whether you could get the parts laser cut by having multiple layers cut and then riveting/bolting/spotwelding them together instead of cnc cutting parts.
Good one, but why engine produce so many smoke?
it's burning oil@@firstlightflicks

Yes was a bit worried as well. Hope the engine vibration isn't a thing. Wonderful build. Living the dream guys. Well done
Nissan SR20DET would have been a much better platform
On a shake down, I tough Nate was gonna cry:) Great work FCP team again!
We'd be lying if we said he didn't mayybbeee shed a small tear haha
Loved every part of this series. Brought a tear to my eye. Reminds me of when I threw my E30 through the project car ringer. It brings an enthusiast infinitely closer to their car.
Really exciting build man!!
amazing build, loved every second of it and team is actually enthusiastic about it! Great job!
This combination just landed high up on my list of dream builds. M133 or 139, manual box, torsen centre for the diff and a silly colour for the paint and that's my commuter.
Do it!!!
@@fcpeuro-media Sadly, I don't have the resources in a few different ways. (health, money, space to build and more) It's not going to happen. I just have to live vicariously through other people's projects.
Mighty-190! Awesome video, lovin' it!
Glad you like it!
cant wait to see it with the suspension dialed in
Epic build, phenomenal
Great build guys, enjoyed watching it from start to finish. Dyno day isn't complete without dumping something on the floor. It's nice to know when you order parts from a company that they are true gear heads there, great inhouse shop as well.
We feel its only a right of passage to leave a little liquid behind after some initial pulls haha. Thanks for the support!
Stunning I would absolutely love that as a road legal car just one special car
We went back and forth on that, but DTM racecar sat so high on our list haha
Awesome series to watch! I must admit, watching this build, and the satisfaction gained in the end has restored motivation in me to finish a build I started almost 5 years ago. I fully rebuilt the engine on my 02 B5 Audi S4, it runs, but needs some work I lost interest in. I need to swap a cam tensioner in the passenger bank, and source a tiny oil and coolant leak.. the leaks is where I lost motivation as its a real pita to see anything on that engine.. but I miss the excitement that car gives me! Thank you for sharing this amazing build, and thank you for inspiring me to re-engage the build! 🙌🙌
Absolutely love to hear this bmorlok84 - we know it can be difficult to get back into a project, especially when there can seem like an insurmountable amount of work left... but you got this! Hope we can help with some parts along the way!
My god it looks soooooo good (and fun to throw around the track). I normally tend to prefer the classic look of the compomotive wheels but man, going with the rotiform was the right move. They really compliment the livery. The whole thing's just perfect.
Appreciate the approval ericb - we too are really happy with how it all came together in the end, in our eyes a perfect blend of old and new.
Yeah this is my kinda build i watched these cars go ham in the 90's i fell in love with dtm as a kid absolutely love a3 and 190
Everything comes full circle! Their time back is now.
190 evo 2 ❤️❤️
This will not be sold for quite a few years!! You guys love it!
Ohhhh ya we are holding onto this one for a while...
Proper car. Well done.
Proper is what we were aiming for 🙏
Love the look of these older benz's
Timeless design
This would be my exact dtm recreation if I had the money 👌🔥
Awesome old school tribute!!! Should do more of these like 1990’s era v8 quattro Audi or the e30 m3 maybe bring an opel calibra from Europe 😮 options are endless. Love the nordiques hat on the Canadian fellow
We have more 90s goodness ideas in our back pocket 😁
Best ever build :) i had one back in the days :)
Shoulda kept it!
Very cool video and awesome project! The very loud music inbetween is not necessary, however ;)
Bad ass build! The 190 Benz is the best DTM car. Probably the Alfa 155 DTM does sound the bes;t V6 @11500RPM. Hopefully you guys have more retro project coming up.
I live in a RHD region and a mate put the LHD 190E passenger side mirror on the driver side. ..... I was thinking, why not u put the RHD 190E passenger side mirror on yours to make it look balance ..... OR u can put on the DTM side mirrors 😁
You should look up that guy from finland that had a Mercedes-Benz 300TD for a drifting car,he put in an V6 bmw diesel wi4h a swedish scania truck turbo under the hood..and that car is insane on the track ..wheelspinn on every gear
Aaaaaah! Mercedes 190e race build content from FCP is SO osda [(oh' sduh) = good]!
Thanks HotMike - glad you were into the 190e!
similar to a tuned 328i with an n20 on e85, fun light little cars
Smoke show. That engine ain’t right.
We figured it out short after - the vacuum pump was pulling too much air into the engine and over pressurizing the crankcase. This was because we don't have a brake booster on the car. Once we regulated the flow it went away!
Felt like I had serious de ja vu because I know I've seen this before. Saw that this is a different channel. Makes sense now.
Yeah we just combined a bunch of our old episodes to re upload to our new channel that will be more oriented towards builds, and other general car content vs. DIY on our other channel!
i can only imagine how great it mustve felt getting to drive that, sure less than ideal conditions but still amazing
Visceral - truly best way we can explain that wheel in your hands.
@@fcpeuro-media absolutely love that about older cars with no electric aides.
Sick. Love this project. My money is on the breather system causing all the smoke, unless you’re running a catch can?
400hp!!! Dreaming a little, it was just north of 300hp!!
400 crank horsepower should be pretty realistic
We could turn it up if we wanted something a bit rowdy too rowdy to enjoy or handle haha
Great build well done Please recap if you sorted out all your small tunes aspesially the slow oil return less turbo smoke 🎉
Update incoming - all sorted!
It's so much prettier with euro lights ❤
I pony just realized that this series is not new and all the videos are available on the regular FCP channel
I wanna see this car with poly bushings for the engine mounts, an EPS and a full leather interior.
Might need a restriction in the turbo oil feed. Taking a guess at the turbo lubrication design...
love that flavor tha nonlime light merc. VS another civic
The engine smokes more than the tires, but I like it :)
Great build guys👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I have the perfect clean car for the next build.. 1986 GLHS 425-600hp (AWD dream build) let’s talk
🤔🤔🤔🤔
Is this a re-release of this build series? Or did I time travel and saw this before and is just now being released?
What was the setup that ended up being used for the balljoint between the front knuckle and bottom arm?
Modified original engine mounts for that engine would reduce vibration. Rubber isolation is crucial!
Use to seat on the passage seat of my dad's 190e manual really like the car too bad dad sold the car 😅 prefer this chassis compared to the w124
noooooo dad!!!
FIRST 😅 been waiting for this. Love this series so much. Would like to see something similar on a w124.
rear wheel look wobbly ..
I like the vw coolant filler touch 😂
Lots of that going on with this one :)
@fcpeuro-media I think it's awesome only thing disappointed me was I was expecting the a45 or c300 c63 or newer spec merc interior dash gauges etc to be in there but I understand it's not a street car more of a track car but maybe 1 day 😉
Such a fabulous build.... and all the guy thinks of is... "donuts!!"? I guess some folks make art, while others just eat the crayons instead. Sheesh...
Sure breaks traction easy = tonnes of fun!
Give Moroso a call to build you a better oil pan and vacuum pump system with catch cans, should make a huge difference and should make some extra power
What’s with the smoke 😂
Amazing car even if the wheels do look a little too big for it!
We think we fixed that with the revised wheel setup 🙂
The white wheels were even bigger than the gold ones? Sorry I am not sure what you mean but it is a beautiful build you should be proud! ?@@fcpeuro-media
I got an asd on 190e (around 610mm shafts and 100mm flange on 185mm diff), anyone know any part numbers for inner and outer joint for the halfshafts?
diff side CV joint seems to be 2013500813 but can't find the outer one anywhere
If only we could find a Cosworth variant and race them head to head.
If only.... 🤔🤔🤔
now do it again but with an NA 2l I4 revving to 9000
I see that Nordiques toque
Im very familiar with the Mercedes 4 pots and the smoke is not good. Classic European merc racers from the 80s ran on twin cam cosworths with huge turbos tuned notth of 300 wheel bhp. 190e 2.5 16s superceded the mk1 2.3 and in stock form produced 200hp. The 4 pot from an A45 is a characterless lump and produces less than the quoted 421 hp. Dynos have registered the engine's at 360hp out of the box. An AMG engine should have a minimum of 6 cylinders and prefferably 8 in a V formation.
holy smokes is right lol
So is the next episode where we find out why the engine or turbo was pulling in so much oil? Its consistently blowing straight blue smoke in a very noticeable way, not normal or expected.
Yep- solved!
judging by the amount of smoke that comes out of this car, the oil problem has not been solved
Solved - update coming , simple mistake on our end!
Can I ask, Who narrates this series? Sounds so familiar to another channel
His name is Alan, he works in our customer service department here haha!
@@fcpeuro-media oh thank you for the reply. It’s not who I thought it was then lol
@@fcpeuro-media seriously tho he really sounded like somebody that does another popular show on KZhead. I won’t mention it by name unless u allow it.
He definitely mimics his style at the very least!
what is the approximate cost of this build?
Without man hours we spent around 40k
wish you guys could build me a street version with a 6 speed
If I'm not mistaken, the M133 produces around 380hp stock. How come you don't even come close to that ?
It makes close to 400hp, how you can say that is not even close? It made over 330whp, should be around 380/390hp at the engine.
if you pay attention at 16:00 approx, he says 340 at the wheel which would be 400 at the engine and then he says 340 torque at the engine with no mention at the wheel. Either way the chart clearly says "at Engine" for both numbers. So there's two options. The chart is wrong and should say WHP or he should have said 340 torque at the wheel. I know the industry standard is measuring at the wheel. But some dyno will free wheel after the run to get the running drive losses and then show the CHP (crank horsepower), which I thought this did, because it clearly says "at Engine". @@fabini14
@@DenHvideHund It does not measure HP at the engine is WHP, to measure hp you have to calculate the inercia of the wheel rotation, witch they never do, so that is whp.
Sounds like Ed Boland.
Very nice build and great skills. However, this car’s spirit is completely different than the one in the dtm machine. The m133 is very wrong for it.
Amazing car! Not sure the wheels fit I must be brutally honest.
we agree - updated them for the original design we planned for, these were temporary 🙂
Looks like you have excessive crankcase pressure for the car to smoke like that and that plug to blow out
That's a lot of oil smoke, even for an engine that has sat for a while. Definitely something wrong with the engine. I wonder if there is a scored cylinder or a bad oil control ring.
These modern engines are designed for certain level of crankcase underpressure, that´s why it has PCV which regulates it. So just blindly remowing this system was a mistake in my opinion, because the pressure diferentials in the system got fucked up and doesn´t provide enough push to drain oil from head and turbo ...that´s my view as engine designer by profession
Need to see proper hot lap =)
Definitely dumping oil. That motor may not like having the pcv blocked up if it is.
Is it just me?... or Nolan Sykes from Donut Media is narrating this video...
🤣you really are a donut fiend!
i think you're engine is smoking, on his way to be kapoot
It might be that the crankcase ventilation is not big enough or correct now that the engine is in an other oriontation that it was original
Forget rtv, The Right Stuff gasket maker is the best.
right stuff is rtv (room temp vulcanizing)
You can't be that dumb, it's also rtv
Belle tuque des Nordiques. 😂
Still no AC I see.
Kinda dad that modern automotive technology has divorced these young men from the real driving experience, until now. Can we go back? Doubtful...
*sad...!!! "Kinda SAD"... See what I mean about modern tech? Feckin' autoINcorrect!
Our goal is bring it back one build at a time!
340 torque, 340 hp, what a shit box :D
To not place at least a rubber bush between the engine mount and the chassis is idiocy.
Beautiful build but you could get 12 2.5L Turbo NC Miata with same weight and power figure and all that with off the shelf parts.
Iam sorry but this is a shame, if any german engineer from this era will see this Video he will screw his head immediaetly into the ground (or turn itself inside his grave). This car has no soul anymore. It was a good base, good thinking and a great selected swap engine but such a terrible Implementation that hurts. Best regards A german engineer
This engine makes stock 380 ,with a half day of tuning and race gas just 400 that’s not that special.
German smoke machines
I hear an American accent lol
ffs please stop putting that damn music in the background.
Demographics : pubescent teensge wannabee baby boomers..? The DTM WARS WERE QUITE ...KINETIC...LOL
One big turbo and one un-balancing muffler? The lac of another muffler at the other rear corner and BiTurbo make this modernization of a legend look akin to a clown car.
Every video of this build, that stupid music on top of engine sounds. I for one like to listen to the sounds that the car is making and not some techno type of crappy music. Sorry.
How many qt of oil does she burn
Why is he giving temperature units in celcius? This is America
The rest of the world uses metric buddy
Why are you watching a European automotive channel? lol
why do us Americans expect all to bow down to us. metric is so much more logical as in 1, 10, 100, 1000, etc.... born a raised in Cincinnati and we got this one wrong.
@@dutysuper999 American automotive channel making those euro cars better!!! lol
