  • Next time you build a no-dig bed, soak the cardboard in water before putting it down. It helps the cardboard break down easier.

    • Yes water cardboard, it's how I do it also, I have been able to actually say so less weeds, and my area looks so tidy because I also use pea gravel after cardboard and it looks awesome.

    • I leave cardboard out in the weather & let the rain wet it before I build a no dig garden. Trick is to get going on the garden before it breaks down completely.!

    • Yes. The more water, the better. If not on the front end, then be sure to water generously. The more water, the quicker they begin breaking down and attracting earthworms, who work the soil and turn it to gold :)

  • I meander about KZhead channels, but always, always return to yours. I do not miss a one. I appreciate the planned but also intuitive way your farm is unfolding. I love the way you raise your sons and appreciate the relationship the two of you have. I support your efforts at developing sustainable methods and appreciate your present efforts to reduce processed foods. You are smart, real, committed to our earth, creative, and simply lovely people. What a beautiful spot you have found.

  • (( tubular tiles for drain port ! )) Metal pots in the wall, I really don’t think that they will last very long until they start rushing and start folding apart with months. And being rusty, they could become sharp, jagged & tetanus problem. If there is a pottery factory or shop n town. They / you could make tubular Decorative tile drain ports hat would last for a 100 years and never become a hazard . ( glazing / painting a pattern or handpainted decoration on the interior of the tubular tile. And on the end of the tile that would be hanging out from the wall ! We hope this suggestion is peaceful and practical for the purpose that you want to do in both decorative, permanent drainage and upgrading the wall. Best wishes as always !! Cheers 🍻

  • I love how you are cooking for your family. I am now on a gluten free /dairy free diet and the food is SOOO processed. I need to get back to basics again. When my 3 grown boys were very little I cooked and baked from scratch all the time. I dried my herbs from my garden and used them during the cold NY winters. The neat things is that my boys now love to cook for their wives and for us ❤ I will feel better when I can do that again. Thanks for sharing.

  • Good to see you sharing that book Tara! I hope what I'm sharing here helps to keep you motivated on that track, but like you say once you see it, its hard to turn back. I also hope it helps at least one of your viewers. I gave up eating processed food nearly 10 years ago, desperate to get rid of ailments really, severe eczema mainly. Apparently I had an overgrowth of candida in my gut (it was being fed with processed sugar etc) causing all sorts of probs, now I have NONE, all gone, all clear, flipping miracle really. And any anxiety is extremely manageable. We are made to believe what's on the shelves at mainstream supermarkets is food that's healthy, its not, its barely safe to consume and I would guess that applies to over 50 % of what is on the shelf. I started small and worked it out as I went , no pressure just cleared all my cupboards and started from scratch, no hard and fast strict rules just went with my gut instinct, and made only what I really loved which is lots of veg, lean meat and fruit (traditional and non traditional roasts and one pot meals mainly) but dark chocolate, oats and dates play a big role in my life to add to various kinds of ingredients and make yum desserts or snack bars and once you get in a HABIT its easy. And I'm not particularly a lover of cooking but enjoy what I do. I don't ever deprive myself of anything but my choices are 90% wholesome. BUT what that does for my well being is worth any frustration I had along the way to achieve this. Funnily enough I recall it was only 10 years ago that I found buying raw products or products with no sugar almost impossible we have come a long way since then with what we can find outside mainstream markets. Here's to healthy eating and living- I love my life and can see you guys do!! xx

I do enjoy your sharing of your explorations in the kitchen and working with food that you've grown or that is grown locally. Having grown up on a farm myself, I always made sure that our family ate things made from scratch as opposed to purchase off the shelf. I think it tends to lead to healthier choices. Paul and I have been in the Algarves for a month now and we'll be heading up to 'Lisbon for a few days before we return to Canada. We can certainly identify with your love of Portugal. One little snippet of advice - choose a dark cupboard to keep your seeds and nuts especially as light turns them rancid in no time as well as air which is not what you want.

  • I for one think it would be great if you shared with us re: your gardening tips & healthy garden to table recipes. Grocery stores are such a landmine of less than desirable choices. A community of posts on healthy eating might get me to grow my own little garden. I'm constantly amazed John's energy & creativity. Each week you can see structures go up as if overnight. Great job!

  • Agreed, fencing off an area for the chickens is the best you can do for them. I have done the same for my chickens as we have massive field rats come over our garden wall - they are as big as cats some of them and attack the chickens.

  • All of my garden beds have been developed using the no dig method. My first one, was added in the fall, one layer of cardboard, no plantings. By the following spring, the paper had degraded enough for plantings. But the weeds also made it through. After that, all other beds had two layers of cardboard, and 5 inches of soil and compost on top. Seeding can occur if shallow rooted and 5 inches of soil.

  • Tara I sincerely hope you take this with the good intention I have. I am 65 and gave Hashimoto’s and before I got diagnosed ( it took me ten years to be diagnosed). I lost about one third of my hair and a third of the outer part of my eyebrows. If you have been having fatigue , headaches , muscle pain, trouble sleeping, along with the hair issue please get your thyroud checked and iron and Ferratin, One of the times in our life our thyroid can go wonky is child bearing years. I hope and pray you are healthy and fine but as a forty year hairstylist and having gone through this myself I am concerned. We love your channel and it brings us joy watching you and your family!🙏🏼💋❤️

  • Rounding up chickens: Have yourself a glass jar with a metal lid, fill it half-full of cracked corn, and maybe some dried grubs. While the birds are in the run, you rattle the jar, then sprinkle a bit of the "treats" onto the ground -- they should come running to gobble it up. Do this several times until they get the sound of the rattling jar associated with the sound. I also will call out to them 1st, then rattle/shake the jar, and treat them when they arrive at my feet. For the call, I used "babies", "babies", or (with my 2nd batch of hens) I used"treat- treats" . Remember, train them FIRST within the run. I was able to call my girls from anywhere on 5 acres, rattling the jar when I saw them come running. Birds are smart little dinosaurs, and if there's a favorite snack waiting for them, there will be.a race between them to come to you and their treats, then you can just walk them to the run, giving them the rest of the treat jar contents once they're all inside. BTW, don't think you'll get slick and not give them anything when you call them --- they're too smart! Diatomaceous earth is an excellent, safe powder to sprinkle inside their coop/laying boxes -- kills lice, fleas, and ticks out. Just don't breathe in the flying powder -- irritates your mucous membranes and lungs, but is safe for the birds. You should be able to purchase a 25 lb bag of "non-food grade" DE at any farm/feed supply store. All my hens have been safe, healthy and happy over the years with this method. Also, Amazon sells a chicken first-aid kit for "owies" like the occasional bumble foot. Have fun!

  • Imo, no judgement, my only 2 cents on those metal pots or any corrosive prone metal used for drainage is they will rust in a season and will leave u rusty drip stains on your nicely painted wall. After all the labor and effort that goes into construction I always seek out maintenance free, toxic free, and quality for longevity. If this is temporary project, then by all means, cost is king. Love love how naturally gifted John is in building. Tara you will always be a happy woman with such a gifted man at your side. 😁

  • Hello Newbies!! I agree that probably giving the chickens a safe run would be the best bet. You’re very busy people and they do become part of one’s family but you can’t have your eyes on them all the time. I remember watching a video where Chip Gaines made a chicken coop with “Chunnels” which were made with framing and chicken wire, boxing it in. It was made to go all around their vegetable garden, so the chickens wouldn’t get into their vegetable garden. However, I was thinking you could use that idea of a “chunnel run” and tweak it off what you currently have for their pen area and create more open areas to the left and right and off behind the greenhouse, into a much larger bigger open areas. The lower “chunnel runs” would save on the amount of wire needed all over and serve them as a hallway to the other room pens. Hopefully you get my meaning. Just a thought ❤. Lovely to see all the spring greens and flowers coming. And those oat bars, I m going to make!! Thanks for sharing. Give the kids a hug! I love watching them grow and see how hard they work right along side you guys. They’re so adorable. 😊

  • Hi Tara and family.. While watching you panic about the chickens ( fair enough too), I thought maybe you could try teaching them to come when you call. It’s very easy, every time you put food down for them just say the ‘ call’..here in Oz it’s, “ Here, chook, chook, chook”, then when they’re out and you can’t find them, a nice loud call will have them racing towards you. 🐓
