  • What is so terrifying is, as we can see in this footage, you can't really see those destructive waves until they are almost upon you. It's not like a Hollywood film where some giant wall of water wave breaks over a beach. You are in the shallows and then suddenly swept off your feet and the waves keep on going inland at an incredible speed, taking you along with them colliding with everything.

    @strikeleather6503@strikeleather6503 Жыл бұрын
    • I remember donkey's years ago as a kid reading a comic (of all things) about a tsunami. That taught me about the water being sucked out, hopefully I would have run. But it did show this giant wave of water, Not a strange while line on the horizon. We were camping in a valley when it happened. We were actually on a boat (in South Africa) the skipper was very worried about the action of the tides. As we drove out of the valley after our holiday, and back into cell phone reception we began to get all the messages it was surreal.

    • @@cathymartens7478 That must have been really awful to experience. I cannot imagine what those people went through in 2004. I think in certain places, Banda Aceh etc, there were waves in fact very tall waves, 35 metres high I think, breaking at the shoreline. I cannot imagine just standing on a beach and watching that come at you. I suppose you are just transfixed in terror.

    • @@strikeleather6503 I can't imagine either. We were on the East Coast of Southern Africa (thousands of miles away)and the tide was really weird, but we had no idea of what was going on. • Very good point. Once he saw those large military/coast guard ships get absolutely swallowed by the wave it hit him and they hauled ass. Still, it’s such an alien, unbelievable sight that many people who aren’t trained or mentally disposed to perform well during emergencies will just stand there, motionless, brains stuck in “FREEZE” mode. This is actually an ancient mammalian survival adaptation: “If you see something totally unknown and scary, FREEZE.” Reason is, moving gives away your position to potential predators, you’re hardest to see when motionless, and it gives you time to analyze the threat. This is your cerebellum/amygdala, which is ancient and powerful, and can inhibit your higher logic/reasoning cerebral cortex. You can’t control it, it controls you. Unfortunately, rare catastrophic events like this are so foreign and terrifying they trigger this freeze reflex which is obviously the last thing you should do. But have sympathy for those just standing there still, staring blankly at death. They’re not stupid, or overly curious, thrill-seeking or lazy: Their bodies and minds are frozen in mortal terror.

    • Right? I don’t understand all those commenters judging this clueless people. Even with the knowledge that Tsunamis exist it’s difficult to tell if it’s one. (And before 2004 it wasn’t common knowledge for Europeans) How dangerous this waves really were was possible to see after they drowned these ships, before that they watched the waves without a scale. Then consider the time their brains needed to process this very unusual situation to switch on survival mode. Imagine having a calm and peaceful paradise vacation and just observing something weird on a day as everyday, see ships drowning and need a view seconds to process, take your kids and run. Between the drowned ships and them running wasn’t even an entire minute.

    • The no sense of danger is astonishing. I just watched another video made by an Italian family or group of families. Five "smaller" waves hit the shores and they were having fun, barely moving back enough to clear the water... I'm sorry, but if you die behaving like that, it's entirely your fault. The sea gave you several warnings: Back off! Even if it's your first day on the shore of such a large body of water, the fact that the waves had no apparent reason to behave like that (i.e. calm, sunny weather) should have been a major red flag of something potentially dangerous happening. The parental instinct alone should have triggered a warning long before they started running...

In fact the world is effectively saying who cares about your holiness. We love pagan worship .and that's the way it's going to be . God is merciful and long induring but he certainly wont allow this wicked practice to continue. God remembers all and will punish .the wicked and visit his punishments even opon their children. Worst is yet to come .then you can all curse his holy name to no avail. When yous all start shouting out o my God as calamity hits he says he wont hear your prayers leaving yous all to you own made distruction By denieing his eternal existence Amen norman Australia

  • After 2004 I think there isn't many people who wouldn't know what a "tsunami" is. Back then most of the tourists couldn't know anything was wrong, because there hadn't been anything as massive as this one for decades, and also because there was no warning about it. No one playing sirens as a warning, no-one telling tourists what is going to happen. Even some of the locals didn't know until they saw the big wave at the horizon, although it should of been obvious right after the ocean retreated. Still, the tourists were left to figure it out themselves and that's one of the reasons there were so many casualties in the end.

Furchtbar. Sie tun mir alle so so leid.

  • The thing about waves is, and people who lived their whole lives landlocked will never know, is that you really don't know the size of a wave until it's right up on you. Mainly because in your field of vision (the open sea), there's really nothing to compare it to. And even if you see it in the distance, most have the midset that the wave will crash before it reaches shore.
