Stoicism for Inner Peace (book): einzelganger.co/innerpeace
Marcus Aurelius pointed out that regardless of the severity of circumstances, there’s always a choice in how we judge them. “Choose not to be harmed-and you won’t feel harmed. Don’t feel harmed-and you haven’t been,” he stated. Marcus’ instruction sounds easy, but it’s difficult to apply if we don’t understand what causes us to feel harmed and when we don’t have the wisdom to make a change. Luckily, the ancient Stoics provide this wisdom.
The work Meditations by Marcus Aurelius contains several ideas that shed another light on the experiences we usually consider harmful. His writings allow us to see our lives differently and change the way we think about the hardships we face, so we can be, as he wrote it, “like the rock that the waves keep crashing over.” This video expands upon several passages from the Meditations that could help us feel less harmed. @robertcronin6603@robertcronin66033 жыл бұрын
    • So what classifies as too much then I think is the question? Obviously everyone would define that differently but how? How do we weigh an expectation to conclude whether it's too much or not? Somewhere I once heard that expectation equals desire+belief in the same place. If that is the case, then 90% of our expectations are actually just desires. Just us asking for things but not believing in the possibility of having them, hence the eventual disappointment. So I suppose the statement holds truth, sure - don't expect more than what you're able to believe in and you won't be disappointed. But how if not through aiming for more can we get more? How would one grow their faith if not by asking for more, although... we've already done plenty of asking... so I suppose it's time we focused on bolstering our faith, our ability to believe in the possibility of having what we want, whatever that may be. Because desire without belief is a contradicting state, one which feels anything but good.

People who want you to feel ashamed are only using it as a power tool. When you let go of any shame that you have, your life will actually be much better and productive. It does not make you a bad person at all, yet everybody out there is trying to make you feel ashamed for everything like eating meat or whatnot. Fuck that shit! Live your life and do as you please. Feeling ashamed is good for noone.

That woke up the beast called flashbacks which came with rage blinding pain and decades of hate . But yes thoughts are what makes life happen . He was 17 I was 8 . When the flashbacks came I called him and told him he called me a liar mom told me she still loved her son . So I cut them all out . • When I was younger I accepted any treatment I received from anyone. The moment I believed I deserved to be treated better endless amounts of suffering entered my life. You can try to avoid some misfortune by surrounding yourself with people that will likely respect you but that isn’t a guarantee that they will and the general population will still treat you as they see fit. Now that I accept that how people treat me is their right and just a reflection of who they are not who I am I do feel more at ease.

I stayed at a countryside in the Philippines for almost 6months, slowly and slowly I found my peace and I realized that the person inside this skull is different from the person outside of it; so slowly I tried controlling my thoughts by meditating and taking a long walks to the hill, and picking woods on my wayback, (I didn't just find peace I also have a wood to cook my meals and keep me warm 😂) that's how and what I did to get sane, to take control over my thoughts and mind.

If people who went through certain circumstances experience the same kind of problems afterwards, is it really a problem of those people's minds? I have been thinking of this in terms of how some people can live as drug addicted , homeless, thieves. Yet seem to live such a destructive life for years without much visible effect. I have come to feel that atleast a good portion of these people exist in this way because they do not have shame of it. And in alot of ways actually enjoy what they do. But the addicts who hate themselves and feel ashamed, alot of this type will deteriorate quickly.

  • There are times in my life where I have consciously made myself upset about something that I felt, for a brief moment, that I could have chosen to not be upset about. There are times I have been genuinely upset (lack of sleep, an already bag day and other factors play roles), but I can remember a few occasions where being upset was a choice, or being upset later upon ruminating about it became a choice. It’s easy now, in the late hours of night when I am relaxed, to tell myself I can choose differently in the future, and sometimes on good days, I do, and it does get easier the more I do it. I cherish the days I am able to choose not to be upset over injustices, unfairness and entitled people trying to take advantage of me, and with practice, I look forward to being able to say “No” and eventually not be bothered when someone starts yelling at me because they refuse to hear my “No” and to just calmly repeat myself until they either give up trying to manipulate me or I choose to walk away from the conflict without trying to explain myself or people please. I eventually want to be able to say “no” to someone without leaving things open to negotiation or explaining myself, and if they get mad about that, to see it as their problem, not mine.

  • Individuals can act in any way they find plausible, and this allows them to accrue benefits or suffer costs, depending on the circumstances. The responsibility that our actions necessitate is the only true weapon we can exploit in order to antagonize the nefariousness of the world around us. Marcus Aurelius realized the power of that weapon and that helped him become an exemplary emperor despite adversity and despite his weaknesses. That is what makes him a respectful example for all of us.

I noticed that women who treat their pregnancy as an illness have the hardest pregnancy while those women who understand that pregnancy is a natural process that comes with discomfort and extreme pain in labor but for the best outcome (beautiful blessing baby), have the best pregnancy.

But if he hasn't - and he has come to the same conclusion as people like Marcus Aurelius through introspection - that makes stoic philosophy ever more solid; like a more universal Truth. When a perspective survives over time and over cultural space, then - to me - it seems much more legit.

  • I think the "choice" of being harmed or not gets predecided during our childhood. The need for love and acceptance can be so overwhelming if one did not receive those things as a child. As we grow older we are told to repress those feelings and emotions and that makes us angry and bitter deep down. Everytime someone insults us, those angry emotions instantly tell us "not this time", and we lash out, or worse, we supress it further and get even more resentful. Trying to not feel that way can not be a solution because at the end one is still not feeling loved and accepted and therefore ignoring their need for those things will only spiral one into a vicious cycle of hate and resentment towards the world. I don't have the answer to what we must do, all I know is that we will not stop untill we get what we want 😔

  • Nothing has made me more content in life than just changing/lowering my expectations for the world and my life experience. When I say this people usually try to demonize me for it, or twist my meaning by implying that I'm willing to accept poor treatment from others. Quite the opposite, I realize that other people can be problematic and expect to run into people who are counterproductive to my purpose. This makes it less painful when I have negative interactions. It helps me to react to them in a healthier way, so toxic people can't truly access me or my feelings. But this is less about people, and more about the times when things simply don't work out as planned or as they "should". It's accepting things as they are so I can find some joy and purpose in reality.
