Kobe, Shaq, Phil & Buss Interview WHY Lakers broke up in 2004

Interviews with Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal "Shaq", Coach Phil Jackson & Lakers majority owner Jerry Buss on why the LA Los Angeles Lakers broke up in 2004. The so-called Kobe and Shaq feud is addressed...why couldn't Kobe & Shaq coexist? Also addressed is why Phil Jackson felt he could no longer coach Kobe. And the reasons why Phil Jackson & Shaq ultimately decided to leave the Lakers are also discussed. Phil, of course, retired and Shaq went to Miami Heat.
The interview was conducted by ESPN and aired on the SportsCenter Sunday Conversation segment with Linda Cohn introducing the story during the episode. The episode aired on December 5, 2004.
Stephen A. Smith interviewed Shaq.
Rest in Peace to Kobe & his 13 y/o daughter Gianna daughter, both whom died in a plane crash on January 26, 2020.

  • The media definitely is to blame for how this duo is remembered. The media just made their differences in personalities way too big of an issue. These 2 are still the last team to 3- peat. They got along good enough.

    • I love Kobe, but the narrative he tried to create about what happened from 99-04 is garbage; lakers didn’t win til Phil Jackson showed up and built the triangle offense around Shaq, because Shaq was the better player then, by far; Shaq won 3 straight finals mvps, a league mvp and a scoring title while Kobe won nothing except in every playoffs from 01-04 Kobe attempted more shots than Shaq to the dismay of Phil Jackson; but Shaq was still the lakers leading scorer every year they won rings from 99-02; in 03 playoffs and 04 playoffs kobe increased his fga over shaqs by astronomical amounts and Kobe became the leading scorer, by like 1ppg, but the lakers lost; Kobe said the triangle offense was “holding him back”, he got rape charge, Phil Jackson left, and Kobe didn’t get past the first round for 3 years; Phil returns brings back triangle offense “expert” Derek Fisher to run the triangle and smart euro player gasol, and other rebounders to make up for Kobe’s high amounts of missed shots as Phil and Tex build a new triangle around kobe who ends up with two rings in the triangle offense he claimed was holding him back in 04; The league and Kobe try to push the “Kobe’s chasing jordan” thing, so the narrative about what happened from 03-04 is constantly put out about “shaqs work ethic” hoping you’ll forget and just blindly go with the “5 rings” narrative; Kobe is a top great with bird and magic; but he has 2 finals mvps; he was the best player in a finals 2 times; 2 less than Lebron, and 4 less than jordan;

  • Dr. Buss made the right decision for the franchise. He was not going to let Shaq hold them down financially. We need more of him in today's NBA!

    • Absolutely. People have to Shaq was an older center who wasn't known to take care of himself in the offseason and Kobe was a couple years into his prime and he had the best work ethic in the league. It made way more sense to keep Kobe instead of Shaq. The Lakers got two championships in 6 years out of it. I doubt they would have won a championship with Shaq especially since he was rapidly declining.

    • Ehh I wouldn’t say all them were real and forth coming. Dr Buss and Phil Jackson were the real ones. Kobe was trying to be cordial and watched his words because he was the most hated player in the league because of the Colorado incident and the breakup with shaq. Shaq in this sounds very hurt and took it personal but is trying to sound he doesn’t care and is a bit dramatic about it. Maybe it’s his way of marketing the beef

  • I'll never understand how people look back on this and say, "Kobe and Shaq had beef." No, they did not. Kobe had beef with Shaq because he couldn't be Michael Jordan if he was the second option to anyone. And it drove Kobe insane that Shaq didn't have to work half as hard to be twice as dominant as he was.
