CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Marion (Jennifer Connelly) goes on a date with Arnold (Sean Gullette) to score some money.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on the novel by Hubert Selby Jr., this gritty drama concerns four people trapped by their addictions. Harry (Jared Leto), and his best friend Tyrone (Marlon Wayans) are impoverished heroin addicts living in Coney Island, NY, while Harry's girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly) is a fellow addict trying to distance herself from her wealthy father. Harry dreams of scoring a pound of smack, from which he could make enough money to open a clothing boutique with Marion, but so far he and his friends can barely scrape by supporting their own habits. Meanwhile, Harry's mother Sara (Ellen Burstyn), who spends her days watching television, is told she has the opportunity to appear on her favorite game show; wanting to lose enough weight to fit into her favorite red dress, she visits a sleazy doctor who gives her a prescription for amphetamines. Soon Sara has a drug habit of her own that is spiraling out of control. Requiem for a Dream was directed by Darren Aronofsky, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Selby; it was Aronofsky's second feature, following his acclaimed independent film Pi.

No one seems to mention this guys performance when praising this film. It's seriously phenomenal how he manages to be proper yet disgusting. On top of that, he subtlety comes off as so arrogant and "smug".

What happened to Harry's friend
This is why I'm not going to watch it, I think too much
Is the world going to explode if he doesn't eat his meal in 30 fucking seconds?
Daniel Staab that the point of the director to make you feel uncomfortable
That steak he was eating must have been delicious!
My god, the continuous sounds of him chewing and silverware on the plate engaged me almost as much as how smug and disgusting he is did. 🤬🤬
Seen this a lot when directors want to introduce a character they want the audience to hate.

What a beautiful woman Jennifer Connelly is
she looks better in the movie
Only 29, but looks 18
usc trojans1987 actually she looks 29, people are ussually in their lrime in their late 20s. 18 year olds don't look like that.

I can't remember if its in the movie but in the book he is actually her shrink. Someone that she has gone to as a teenager and he has abused her. Marion came from a really rich family and she was sent to him, he knows how vulnerable she is and used it to his advantage. At the very least he should be struck off.
My misophonia !
Why? You don't eat? Guess I just found another junkie.
Arronofsky does a real good job using the light shining up from the table and onto Sean Gullette, making him look so satanical. Kinda shows that Marion is also selling her soul and not just her body.
+Michael Silverberg And the awful way he's chewing doesn't make it any better. It's so good. He wasn't even on screen for long and his presence is just nauseating.
Nicole Ham Such range as well. You feel so sorry for him in Pi as the hero. He makes such a great villain here.
The change of colors in all the film are too way amazing ❤️
The whole lighting of that scene is just amazing. It creates unease
Hot damn I never noticed - brilliant
This movie shows truly how depraved humanity can be, taking advantage of a person's addiction to satisfy a depraved fantasy.
Also, selling your body and soul to satisfy a depraved addiction.
She knew what she was doing when she called him to have dinner. She knew what she was doing when she told him she had a favor to ask. And she knew what she was doing back at his place when she asked him to turn off the light. It was all part of her plan, so you can't blame him for responding exactly how she wanted.
@@Danimal1177 Well in this particular instance you can blame him. Dude's a doctor, and what he's doing is unethical. Doctors aren't supposed to enable their patients, because that would be a violation of their 'Hippocratic Oath'. Even if we weren't a doctor, you can still blame him, because everyone is responsible for their own actions, even her. Nothing keeps anyone from just walking away
@@georgemartyn5268 True true, she's just as guilty, even though she's just a dope fiend. But the sober "doctor" is the monster in this case

I am a former iv meth head, and this movie really goes into the addicted mind perfectly, this film is art and should be viewed and studied in highschool to plant that anti-drug message early.
Yeah good luck with that. Some people watched this high in high school. Actually I'm pretty sure I knew multiple people that did this. You, as a former IV meth head, should know this mindset perfectly. That's kinda the problem with teenagers--they're dumb. They don't and can't think things through rationally and longer term and it isn't just brain development but this sense of short term invulnerability and arrogant shortsightedness that comes with youth.
Wish the best of luck man
Congrats on getting clean!
I am a former iv user too, but opoids. And I absolutely agree with you. This movie was really accurate when it comes to the mind of an addict and their behaviors. It shows just how far an addict will go. At that point it's not just for the high anymore. You're at the point where you just want to feel normal and not to be sick anymore. It should be required to be watched in high school and the book should be required reading. And I'm sure like myself you are so grateful to be out of that vicious cycle. Congratulations for getting clean! I know how hard it is.

Its sad how one evil leads to another in a tight sequence of events: drug addiction leads to misery, shame, then to lying, cheating, stealing, prostitution, gambling and sometimes even worse.
Not when it is legalized
@@bridgettebianchi9315 you can’t legalize drugs just legalize the use and persecute dealers. Mandatory rehabilitation should be a thing imo

Momentum is a powerful force. Be it positive or negative. Once in motion it tends to stay in that direction until outside forces are applied
The most horrendous thing of all is to think that he was her psychiatrist.
Probably happens more than you think. I know a woman nurse that was being seen by a psychiatrist she worked with at a rehabilitation facility. According to his wife the nurse broke up their marriage, she found out when their daughter found messages between the two. Later the nurse claims she recieved a 100k settlement from the Dr saying he said she had to sleep with him but is now clinical director at the Dr's practice. Sketchy meanwhile his practice partner issued a psych eval for this nurse.
She should've never done drugs.

If only Harry hadn't forced her to do it he still could've kept her,yet their addiction consumes them both while tearing them apart.this movie is fantastic and. No one should be afraid to see it more than once.
Harry didn't deserve her the second he condoned her prostituting herself. Obviously drugs make people into the worst version of themselves but ultimately you still have to take responsibility for who you are on them.
It wasn't Harry's fault, man. I mean, Harry could have gone to prison for selling drugs and that money from the drugs was used by Marion too so she returned the favor. She decided to do drugs and she saw herself in need of them so if Harry hadn't told her to do that, she would have had to do it anyway. The same goes for Harry, Tyrone suggested him to try heroin so as they know what they are selling, bu Ty didn't put a gun on Harry's head so Harry chose that too. That's one part of the film that people seem to ignore. Everybody would like to have a boyfriend who could find a different solution, but in this situation what Marion did was the solution they ''needed'', what makes this film sadder.
Maybe I'm reading into it too much, but it almost seems like she's being vague about what she would have to do because she hoped he would step up and tell her no, that she doesn't have to do this. But he doesnt. :( I would be devastated if my significant other was okay with me selling my body so we could get our next fix, especially if it was something I didn't want to do.
@@fleabaguette9699 that’s the thing… her addiction had her decide to do it. He didn’t outright ask her to…at the end of the day… everyone made their own bed. The only real innocent victim of circumstance was the mom.
He didn't force her tho
This whole film is like an extended partnership for a drug free america commercial.
Ok so it's longer, but it still pushes the "drugs are bad mmkay" bullshit that is based on persecution of addiction as a moral failing rather than a biochemical disorder.
Fine, if drugs aren't as bad as the movie say they are, then go shoot some heroin for a couple of months...
I never said that heroin isn't bad. I'm saying that the demonizing of drug use as portrayed in this film comes from people who see people with addiction problmes as wicked and immoral rather than people who have a sickness. Also, do you know how many people have used heroin or cocaine at some point in their lives and didn't have addiction problems? The numbers might suprise you. Think about alcohol. Many of us enjoy drinking alcohol often in moderation, sometimes to excess. But not all of us need to drink regularly on a daily basis to be able to physically function. Alcoholics however do. It's the same thing with heroin. Addiction is a biological condition that works the same way regardless of the chemical dependency. I'm not sure why what I"m saying is so offensive or shocking. You ask anyone who does social work with people with substance abuse problems and they'll tell you pretty much the same thing I'm saying.
+mwells219 except a heroin addiction is way stronger than an alcohol addiction. Plus it's easier to become hooked on smack than booze
I'm not sure what you mean by stronger. If you mean that someone is more likely to become addicted to heroin than alcohol, there's not actually a good empirical, statistical way to measure likelihood of addiction. Even though we hear stories in the media and health ed class of nightmare drug addicts, the reality of illicit substance use is far more complex. For example, heroin was used by millions of soldiers in the vietnam war, and there was a fear that these soldiers would become serious opiate addicts when they returned home, in truth only a percentage of veterans continued heroin use while most did not. In fact, when looking at heroin vs. alcohol in terms of which one someone is more likely to be addicted to, alcohol wins. Alcohol is readily available to be purchased legally, while Heroin involves dealing with the black market which is much more difficult and dangerous and subject to large flucctuations in availability. Because of legality, most people with addiction issues in America are addicted to alcohol more than any other subsance.
I don't know but that close up of her, breaking a sweat, the monotone voice, arnold with his blurry bald head and remote control dimming the lights fading her face away to approach and to smoosh her face with his hands as she is panting, it's so well done and so scary

Him eating like that is annoying but it's intentional. Marion is disgusted by what she's about to do. Him eating sloppy like that just enforces it. We're as grossed out as she is.

It’s Heroin’ Time!
Arnold's character is perfectly played. The clothing, the haircut, the manners, the remote for lights (which was a gimmick for wealthy people)...
I think the conversation in the beginning of this clip was the beginning of the end for Marion. I think Harry not only giving her permission but encouraging her to sell her body for drugs cracked her spirit, and then it completely broke as things got worse.
This movie causes a lot more fear and anxiety than most horror movies today.

It’s such an Astonishing, Powerful, Emotional, Heartbreaking feeling when a movie like ‘Requiem For A Dream’ (2000) can make you bawl your eyes out, and make you think this deep. From the editing, sound effects, acting & special effects...this film brings the effects and aftermath of drug abuse and addiction right into our eyes, since we can’t truly understand how terrible it is unless we are shown in a way like this. It’s a mistake most of us keep making since once we do it once we can’t stop. Nuff Said.
