CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Marion (Jennifer Connelly) goes on a date with Arnold (Sean Gullette) to score some money.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on the novel by Hubert Selby Jr., this gritty drama concerns four people trapped by their addictions. Harry (Jared Leto), and his best friend Tyrone (Marlon Wayans) are impoverished heroin addicts living in Coney Island, NY, while Harry's girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly) is a fellow addict trying to distance herself from her wealthy father. Harry dreams of scoring a pound of smack, from which he could make enough money to open a clothing boutique with Marion, but so far he and his friends can barely scrape by supporting their own habits. Meanwhile, Harry's mother Sara (Ellen Burstyn), who spends her days watching television, is told she has the opportunity to appear on her favorite game show; wanting to lose enough weight to fit into her favorite red dress, she visits a sleazy doctor who gives her a prescription for amphetamines. Soon Sara has a drug habit of her own that is spiraling out of control. Requiem for a Dream was directed by Darren Aronofsky, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Selby; it was Aronofsky's second feature, following his acclaimed independent film Pi.

It shows just how far an addict will go. At that point it's not just for the high anymore. You're at the point where you just want to feel normal and not to be sick anymore. It should be required to be watched in high school and the book should be required reading. And I'm sure like myself you are so grateful to be out of that vicious cycle. @gerryfromthevoid8986@gerryfromthevoid89862 жыл бұрын
    • It wasn't Harry's fault, man. I mean, Harry could have gone to prison for selling drugs and that money from the drugs was used by Marion too so she returned the favor. She decided to do drugs and she saw herself in need of them so if Harry hadn't told her to do that, she would have had to do it anyway. The same goes for Harry, Tyrone suggested him to try heroin so as they know what they are selling, bu Ty didn't put a gun on Harry's head so Harry chose that too. That's one part of the film that people seem to ignore. Everybody would like to have a boyfriend who could find a different solution, but in this situation what Marion did was the solution they ''needed'', what makes this film sadder.

    • Fine, if drugs aren't as bad as the movie say they are, then go shoot some heroin for a couple of months...

      @fotbollen51@fotbollen518 жыл бұрын
    • I never said that heroin isn't bad. I'm saying that the demonizing of drug use as portrayed in this film comes from people who see people with addiction problmes as wicked and immoral rather than people who have a sickness. Also, do you know how many people have used heroin or cocaine at some point in their lives and didn't have addiction problems? The numbers might suprise you. Think about alcohol. Many of us enjoy drinking alcohol often in moderation, sometimes to excess. But not all of us need to drink regularly on a daily basis to be able to physically function. Alcoholics however do. It's the same thing with heroin. Addiction is a biological condition that works the same way regardless of the chemical dependency. I'm not sure why what I"m saying is so offensive or shocking. You ask anyone who does social work with people with substance abuse problems and they'll tell you pretty much the same thing I'm saying.

      @mwells219@mwells2198 жыл бұрын
    • +mwells219 except a heroin addiction is way stronger than an alcohol addiction. Plus it's easier to become hooked on smack than booze

      @fotbollen51@fotbollen518 жыл бұрын
    • I'm not sure what you mean by stronger. If you mean that someone is more likely to become addicted to heroin than alcohol, there's not actually a good empirical, statistical way to measure likelihood of addiction. Even though we hear stories in the media and health ed class of nightmare drug addicts, the reality of illicit substance use is far more complex. For example, heroin was used by millions of soldiers in the vietnam war, and there was a fear that these soldiers would become serious opiate addicts when they returned home, in truth only a percentage of veterans continued heroin use while most did not. In fact, when looking at heroin vs. alcohol in terms of which one someone is more likely to be addicted to, alcohol wins. Alcohol is readily available to be purchased legally, while Heroin involves dealing with the black market which is much more difficult and dangerous and subject to large flucctuations in availability. Because of legality, most people with addiction issues in America are addicted to alcohol more than any other subsance.

  • It’s such an Astonishing, Powerful, Emotional, Heartbreaking feeling when a movie like ‘Requiem For A Dream’ (2000) can make you bawl your eyes out, and make you think this deep. From the editing, sound effects, acting & special effects...this film brings the effects and aftermath of drug abuse and addiction right into our eyes, since we can’t truly understand how terrible it is unless we are shown in a way like this. It’s a mistake most of us keep making since once we do it once we can’t stop. Nuff Said.
