Nito Shinkage Ryu Kusarigama Jutsu 二刀神影流鎖鎌術
This is a demonstration at a Kobudo Event held every year in Abeno (Osaka) Japan.
Most participants are members of the Nihon Kobudo Kyokai.
(This video was originally posted as Ito Shinkage..., but a poster kindly gave me the correct name. ) Thanks Steve.

  • This weapon is called Kusarigama (chain sickle) and real one is made of heavy irone chaine and a heavy iron ball. This teqchnique was invented for those who are not allowed to carry swords, namely farmers, craftsmen and marchants, even Ninjas and was carried on secretely by them. This video is only for demonstration, but real one is very deadly. Samurai actually hated opponents with this weapon, because in a real fight, you can’t really see where the ball is for its speed, and the ball can crack your skull. Eveyone in Japan knows the existence of this weapon, but only very very few prectice this.

    • Always thought that the chain was on the other end, usually the person would have only one sickle and chain with metal ball on end in one hand the sickle and the other the chain ⛏️✋🔗🖐️🔗🎱 it was more like a two handed weapon. One hand would attack with the chain the other the sickle and you can always use the chain between the hands

    • @@Shellackle This is a demonstration yes, but if this was a real fight would you struggle with your opponent for the control of your weapon that is chained into his while he has a perfectly free weapon on his off hand or would you quickly let your weapon go to switch to your free sidearm. Once you get the chain on the weapon it's very easy to just roll it more around it with slight movements to trap your opponent even more. I'm not saying these people would be able to pull this of in a real fight to death or anything but that was a quite realistic reaction to get your weapon chained up while you have another free one on your side.

    • @@Shellackle It’s a demonstration-likely a form or “Kata” that’s older than both of us combined. Yes. It is rehearsed, but these are not exactly meant to be replicated move-for-move. These are simply to start getting your mind used to the way your weapon works, expanding what tools you have in your arsenal depending on what situations do pop up, and from there, your whole level of understanding of your own abilities changes. I used to teach at a studio in my hometown. Fun times.

    • oh man a flying hunk of steel is bad news for any part of the body 😬. ive been dabbling in rope dart for about a year now and landed one solid "hit" on myself accidentally by returning the dart too violently and not dodging. in the moment my dumb brain thought i could slow it down enough to deflect it off my elbow maybe getting another wrap to set up for a launch, when in reality the force of a freely falling pound and a half dart was more that enough to split my elbow flesh down to the bone from the sheer impact. absolutely wild weapon to practice with, very steep learning curve though 😭😭

    • Sorry but I just can't be impressed by the fact the sword dude is clearly not resisting. The moment he let his tanto get bound by the off-hand kama is the moment I got convinced everything till there was not with any resistance. Mfer was just yeeting his own sword, presenting the handle to get wrapped, acting like the strike was so fast he couldn't react at all (even if any swordsman worth his salt would AT LEAST try to react to the attack even if it was too fast/couldn't be stopped). I am growing more and more convinced that the kusarigama's effectiveness is nothing more than hot air and copium. Cool weapon, but not all that effective.

  • I was watching a pair of amateurs use this weapon, but now that I'm seeing a professional handle it, I'm impressed. It's a good way of keeping your opponent at bay and dictating the pace of the fight. If you're swinging it horizontally, and they try to dash underneath it and attack you, you can change the swing of the weapon to vertically hit them, and vice versa when they try to flank you. And if they DO get close enough, you can use your other hand to swipe at them with the sickle, similar to how Musashi Miyamoto would block an attack with one sword and slash his opponent with the other while they were vulnerable. You can also use it to restrain a person or the weapon they're wielding, and go in for the kill that way (provided they don't pull a second weapon out before you reach them)

      @Lucifer-hq5pe@Lucifer-hq5pe4 жыл бұрын
    • @ToldYouSo Yeah sure try to stab someone with a broken skull. People have killed each other with much simpler stuff like common rocks, so sure, a metal ball on a chain swung with great speed wouldn't get the job done... It obviously wasn't a weapon everyone used, this part you got correctly indeed. But saying that a direct hit to the head would do no damage is just "bullshido". It doesn't need the weight of a freakin train to do damage. A baseball bat isn't that heavy either, but it surely could kill someone. I've seen people telling others that a pistol would do the job much better. I don't know if those are just trolling, or plain stupid, but i think i don't need to mention that back then, when the kusarigama was invented, people couldn't just go to the gun shop and buy some pistols.

      @Lucifer-hq5pe@Lucifer-hq5pe4 жыл бұрын
    • @ToldYouSo Well it's not worth my time to tell the same stuff over n over. Everyone could fling it around. Precise use would still require some sort of training. You're acting like the weight on it would need to be half a ton... And your last sentence was complete nonsense. For example: An unarmed fighter COULD beat a swordfighter, if he is skilled and maybe a bit lucky. Disarm him, then choke him to death with bare hands. That would mean just because an unarmed person killed a swordfighter, every sword would get abandoned and everyone would fight bare handed. That sentence made no sense. Just because some weapons are superior to others, it doesn't mean that no other weapon would be used and be able to kill. You're acting like i'm trying to convince you that the kusarigama is some godlike tool, which it obviously isn't. But it can definitely kill.

      @Lucifer-hq5pe@Lucifer-hq5pe4 жыл бұрын
    • @ToldYouSo I never said the kusarigama was used much, and yes, swords are mostly superior indeed. Oh btw i don't live in a city
