GARDEN PARTY
A Film by ILLOGIC
www.bloompictures.tv/
"On paper, the synopsis to Garden Party seems ridiculous, but in reality it’s a stroke of genius as rewarding as the gorgeous animation the film is presented in. Essentially a hilarious romp featuring a group of inquisitive, accident-prone amphibians, this 7-minute short avoids hopping down the path of saccharine sweet anthropomorphism (we see all too much in animation) by blending its delicious dark subplot into proceedings. It’s a move that really lifts this short above and beyond a lot of the other films we see in the genre.
Though the clever, unfolding plot was my own personal highlight of Garden Party, it would seem neglectful to gloss over that glorious aesthetic without mentioning it in more detail. From that meticulous opening shot of the frog gliding through the debris-filled pool to that incredibly textured frog rising from the plate of oyster shells, it’s the attention to detail here that truly impresses. It’s not only the frogs that are the carefully considered characters in the design though, the location feels as much of a player in the storyline as any of our long-legged protagonists and if anything it’s the conscientious depictions of the backgrounds that add that extra level to both the aesthetic and that compelling subplot.
Screened in the ‘Horror: Thrilling and Chilling’ programme at this year’s Encounters festival (where it was easily the stand-out film of the session), Garden Party has been impressing audiences and juries at festival worldwide throughout 2016 & 2017. Winner of the ‘Best Graduate Short’ at GLAS Animation Festival, ‘Best Student Project’ at Siggraph and a ‘Special Jury Mention’ at Clermont-Ferrand, this is undoubtedly one of the best independent 3D animation’s we’ve encountered in sometime." - S/W Curator Rob Munday

    • Julien animals in 3D animation? Quite the opposite. Hyper realistic animals in 3D animation? Very much so. This is why they created uncanny valley moments where they tried too had with expressiveness. Disney designed a visual mess because they were too afraid to infuse their hyper realism with movements full of character and emotion throughout the entire film like in the original, so they settled with boring but beautiful realism, as well as some expressiveness which stuck out like a rusty nail in the midst of the realism. Basically it wasn’t too hard or expensive. They just took a really risky design choice and flopped.

    • I hate the people who know nothing about art giving disney excuses for the shitty animation in TLK19. it would have looked just fine jf they actually animated the faces, but instead they made the faces mumble rather than talk, and not emote whatsoever (which lions do, a lot) which made it stand out way more than regular lipsync woupd.

    • edge-spaghett Amen to that. Expressions don’t have to be exaggerated to the extent of cartoons to avoid stiffness. There’s so many subtle motions that go a long way when put together. Even realistically, it makes me think of the recent photo of a lion smiling when it amused itself by scaring the shit out of a photographer with his roar. It’s a very clear look of amusement on a real animal.

    • This is the quality we would be consistently seeing in theaters if the animation industry hadn't devolved into a corporate circlejerk that sees movies as products to be watered down so they can appeal to as broad an audience as possible. And obviously, bigger audiences mean more money. Art students graduate to a corporate world that swallows their bold ideas and ambitions and tells them that it's much better for everybody if they drop their own projects and put their nose to the grindstone to produce the next Emoji Movie.

Short films like this are possible since they are made with an individual or small studios with a clear direction in mind, unlike big budget movies with dozens or hundreds of people working on a single film Yes, CGI are better but there are always better ways on improving a film/show without CGI like making use of lighting etc.

The juxtaposition of the comedy (little and big amphibians) and the horror (The human story). The entire thing would be amazing if it was well directed/presented with stick figures and sock puppets. My point being that not only are the visual effects and audio spot on, but the plot and theme are incredibly well done.

  • This, is storytelling in its grandest! I was mesmerized by the frogs and even laughed at the gigantic one stucked in the jar. I thought, good for you! And then the music played, made me swing a bit. That was a good choice of music. It almost distracted me from the grim scene that came on next. Corpse! A corpse appeared in the midst of all the revelry. Now, I cannot look away. I was stunned, never expected anything sinister happened. Well done, team! Please make more shorts like this. 👍👍👍

  • Noticed a few comments on here about drump. I took the film as a celebration and relief of the end of his term, but also that some of the only things birthed of his end, in his space are frogs... Cute and multitudinous, but also dumb and gluttonous. I liked this very much. Lolled a couple times. It's nice to see something with some point, not too blatant and still very entertaining. Thank you!

  • I love the tone of this short film tbh. There's something dark and uncanny about it, and over time you start to notice how something is clearly wrong, but life is still thriving there. The frogs and the toads have a safe environment to live in and have plenty of access to food. So there's something strangely wholesome about the whole thing despite how morbid it actually is.

  • holy crap... when the toad is shown.... i know it's animation, yet all my instincts are telling me it's real from all these subtle, yet incredible accurate and realistic tiny movements. I've been around toads and frogs almost my whole life and the first bit of seeing the toad especially is just... wow.... INCREDIBLE work. Hell, even if it wasn't CG, I would say amazing job on getting paid amphibian actors

    • @@blacktor1278 yup, some think it’s stupid. I believe that once you have a seemingly endless amount of money you won’t be happy. You’ll just want new stuff all the time, and in doing that you’re ruining the world for everyone else.

  • I love this video. Congrats to the brilliant students on it! You have a real future with this stuff! I thought about the bloated chap in the pool……he only had friends in his life, you know, the good times, but nobody’s missed him for days, maybe weeks! A pictures worth a thousand words, but a film is worth a million!

  • Notice how in nearly every shot it shows either the pool where the body *is* or the scenery that tells *how* the body got there.

  • When the little guy chasing the butterfly first hopped into view, the oleander that they were on was absolutely perfect. There were (I'm guessing) some liberties taken with the behaviours though. I think that the frog would have used his tongue to catch it, and I'm pretty sure that a toad would eat a small tree frog.
