Join Tom as he makes an English wheel from an old G clamp and scrap that he has laying around the workshop.
If you would like Tom to make one of these for you please get in contact as we would be more than happy to do so For a small fee that covers the cost of the clamp, materials and time it takes. All the money will be put back into our channel.
Many thanks

  • Excellent work! I happen to know a local garden gnome who will be overjoyed that he can now start wheeling and finish building his dream car.

  • Excellent! I used to teach secondary school D&T. We bought an old set of bending rolls, but I don't recall ever seeing English wheels in any of the schools where I worked or visited. This design would be fantastic for some projects at GCSE or A level, so I hope you're able to supply forward-thinking (or is that backwards...) schools. Sadly, many workshops have been converted into IT suites, making practical work a thing of the past for many schoolchildren, so I don't hold out much hope!

    • Yes I was a aid at contra Costa collage and they shut down every welding class in California in community collages. I went out trying to gather up many signatures in Northen California at many many shop's why it was important to keep them open. Like you said slowly they closed them gave us a little space to keep the class going but made it harder for me to get enough student's to sign up with what little the school board gave us to work with. As soon as I left it shut down. Needed 35 student's to sign up in order to have a class. We only had room for may be 20 student's. We had no accidents that's all they wanted to shut the program down. The same building they turn it into a computer learning center. I got to see the back room deal's. Collage is just a scam. I seen canclers push students into classes they didn't even need just so the teacher could have a full class.

  • I had a similar idea but as i've not used (or needed so far) an English Wheel for nearly 40 years i didn't pursue it. However this has given me inspiration to continue with my original idea which was to use an "old skool" valve spring compressor to give the quick-release facility. Modern versions tend to be a bit flimsy but i have an old one hung in my shed so might sacrifice that........... Nice to know the idea works in practice as well as theory! ;) :D

We are very luck to use a large cast edwards wheel in our day jobs. even very basic ones are a couple of hundred quid so I thought this idea might give people the opportunity to make one for very little money and just your time to make it and it still produces a good result.

  • Fink it’s bloomin marvellous. Shamed to say when someone welds I still turn my head away from my iPad! Have a passion for Airstream vans but could only build a Basecamp with straight curved flat aluminium and acrylic windows. Think a compound curve for regular Airstream will have to wait. I’m 75yrs and need first to do course on welding. Maybe after that...

    • Hi Peter . Yes it can still be very bright on videos! Airstreams are lovely. I hope you get to give it a go one day 👍

  • A Lancia with "a bit of a rust issue"?! Surely you jest! Good build idea. To square the rollers before weld-up, try putting straight rollers in first so that the faces meet up square, rather than fight the radius on the lower roller.
