Dushka: The Ukrainian military's modified Soviet-built machine gun

2022 ж. 6 Қыр.
1 477 181 Рет қаралды

One of the most iconic machine guns ever built is the Soviet-made DShK .50 calibre heavy machine gun, better known as the 'Dushka' which means 'Dear' in Russian.
It has been used in wars from Vietnam to Syria and an adapted version is being used by the Ukrainian military.
The Dushka was originally developed in the 1930s as an anti-aircraft gun and can fire 600 rounds a minute at a range of 1.5 miles.

  • I'm a former US Army 11B. We took fire from one of these (obviously not the modified Ukrainian version) in Ramadi in 2006, and I'll never forget the sound of it. It was like wtf are they firing at us??? I had been in plenty of firefights at that point but I think the largest thing that had ever been fired at me machine gun wise was a PK. I've never felt a greater sense of urgency to reduce a target.

      @badcornflakes6374@badcornflakes637410 ай бұрын
    • @badcornflakes6374 that's right, it was used in light trucks carrying 4 affixed .50 caliber M2 browning to fight "low" flying aircraft which were supporting the enemy ground troops. With a fire rate of 450-600 rpm, multiplied by 4 they obtained 1800-2400 rpm, which at that time was an insane fire rate for a relatively cheap and simple gas-operated machine gun. And an effective range of 1800 m was good enough to prevent aircraft from closely supporting their ground troops.

One soldier carried the gun, another the tripod and another for pullet cases. They assembled it and hhhhh man believe me when I say this it's not good to be on the receiving end. Later on in the war I had the pleasure of firing it. All I can say is damn. I personally don't like this Ukrainian version. But it's only me.

  • DShK (GRAU - 56-P-542 index) is a Soviet heavy machine gun with a 12.7×108 mm cartridge. Developed on the basis of the design of the large-caliber machine gun DC. In February 1939, the DShK was adopted by the Red Army under the designation "12.7 mm large-caliber Degtyarev - Shpagin machine gun of the 1938 model". While maintaining the principle of operation of automation and the locking circuit of the barrel of the DC machine gun, the power mechanism was completely changed (it provided the supply of the cartridge belt either from the right side or from the left). Accordingly, the design of the cartridge belt (the so-called "crab" type) has also become different. The muzzle brake had a different design. The large-caliber machine gun of the 1938/46 model is characterized by a relatively high firing efficiency. In terms of muzzle energy, which ranged from 18.8 to 19.2 kJ, it surpassed almost all existing machine gun systems of this caliber. Thanks to this, a large penetration effect of the bullet on armored targets has been achieved: at a range of 500 m, it penetrates high-hardness steel armor with a thickness of 15 mm (20 mm of medium-hardness armor type RHA). The machine gun has a fairly high rate of fire, which determines the effectiveness of fire on fast-moving targets. Maintaining a high rate of fire, despite the increase in caliber, was facilitated by the introduction of a buffer device in the back of the machine gun. The elastic buffer also softens the impacts of the mobile system in the extreme rear position, which favorably affects the survivability of parts and accuracy of shooting.

  • It might look cool and all but the practical application of this is going to be very limited. Nobody is going to be humping that thing for long, and between the supposed two man crew is going to have maybe 200 rounds. Also, sling some SLAP rounds through that muzzle brake and see what happens. Heavy machine guns like this and the m2 are intended to be in fixed positions with a tripod and t and e, or vehicle mounted to be effective. There's a reason big bore anti tank rifles died out a long time ago, which is essentially what they're trying to make here.

    • Not penetrating a bmp at 900m however. At 500m API rounds will easily defeat the armor of APCs, just as well, the platform they've adapted it too is easily relocated, which makes for longer living gunners. They're basically using it as a readily available AT rifle, probably firing in bursts in ambushes in conjunction with other forces.
