I think he's using "mad" as a default word because he's getting irritated that he doesn't have the word he wants. He wants to ask Dylan for something, but he immediately gets irritated, the "twitchy tail" and ears back after he says Dylan and ponders for a second, then he does his loop against the scratcher to think if he can say it another way and he says, "Russell," but he still says, "Mad," because it doesn't fix the verb issue of what he WANTS from Dylan. He's getting into complex sentence building! Oh, and Billie of Billie Speaks does the same circling thing when she's thinking of a word. I didn't think that was weird because humans do that too! Watch a person talking to a group about a difficult subject and they'll usually stop, scratch their head or self soothe, pace or do a little circle while they're processing, then start talking again. I think it's a non-verbal cue to let others know that we're still working on it. And now the spinning wheel when videos are buffering makes way more sense...lol!
Yes! I had the same feeling when I watched him. He was frustrated of not being able to express what he wanted. It was something much more complex than before. It is madly impressive as Russell needs to first recognize his own "want" for something and then "name" it. Without somebody else naming it for him. But that is what I got too!
Either that, or he is bored and knows that mad will get him attention without being tied to any action on his part (like accepting pets or eating or going out).

My male cat did!! He used to hate my husband. Spraying/peeing on his things or any male that came over to our house! Or he would bite/rip stuff up.

@@Xen-di5le It is natural for us to assume that when a cat pees on someone's things it means they don't like that person. Since that is what we might do. But apparently cats can just find the smell of human testosterone very loud and so they cover it up with something better - their smell. Which doesn't smell as bad to them as it does to us (or so I've read.) Of course, I can't speak for your cat. But my cat actually loves my male partner. She sits in his lap, makes squishy love eyes at him, ect. But she'll also pee on his stuff/his side of the bed/his pillow. She's NEVER peed on my stuff in 11 years. Of course - we've taken her to the vet multiple times for urinalysis, blood work, ect. I just thought you might like to hear another experience on cat urine and our male partners. xD
Sometimes cats pee on things just to show ownership. Might smell another animal, something that is offensive, or expressing emotions! You just have to know the cat to figure it out, or with words, let them tell you! But meow's, purrmeows, and tail, ear, and facial expressions tell too!
I'm an animal lover but I don't know how you cat owners can stand it anything that pees like a cat on things forget it. There p is awful

it is a very emotionally charged word for us, i doubt the cat carries the same significance, but since humans have such a strong reaction when she presses this specific button, she will press it to amuse itself

This is the first video I've seen on this channel, and it's definitely a process to teach a cat words, but it can be done, even if I don't think this cat knows exactly what the buttons mean yet. The channel Billispeaks, which probably inspired them, showcases a much older cat that I consider to truly understand all the words she presses, it's truly a wonder to see her speak what she means, I'd recommend looking at their videos if you're not convinced it can be done. I, myself, would never have the patience to try something like this, but it's really cool to see other people try. I'm not expert on this kind of thing, and as I previously mentioned I've never watched this channel before, but I think their fault lies in introducing too many buttons too fast, without making sure the cat understands all the previous buttons first. It's a very long process that can take months until you have so many buttons.

I'm surprised that Russell has any fur left on his face. He rubs the corner brush so hard and so often!

Before he even pushed the mad button his tail was saying he was mad. It never stopped twitching! He was really mad at Dylan.

When we DO connect on a verbal level with our pets...cats, dogs, etc., is it so hard to believe they REALLY ARE Meaning what they say? If so, how about more mutual Respect!!!

My cat (heaven sent, RIP) was mad at me for 2 yrs to the month bc I brought home 2 stray kittens she had to babysit plus took attention away from her. They obeyed her, she was in control of the house. She ignored me & made sure to go to everyone else in front of me, she was so smart. Her name was Lilly she was all white w blue eyes, a princess for sure. 💜❤️💜
My late Line (LEE-na) was mad at me for one year because I forced her to put up with two new kittens who constantly got on her nerves. The little ones adored her and copied everything she did.

I'm noticing lately that his answers when he meows them are taking on the same cadence as your words. Kind of like the mimicking small children do when they are about to say their first word. I know he is not going to start speaking, I just think it's interesting that he seems to be mimicking your tone and cadence the way a small child would
Makes sense. Mimicking tone to convey inflex for better context or nuance.
Well, I said HELLO to my cat once and he repeated it back to me! 😱 He repeated it perfectly! Normally he just made a mau which sounded similar. So yes, they do mimic our sounds.
I have seen this in cats. But I also imitate them too. 😅
Cats can actually learn some human words. I met a cat once who used 'yes' and 'no' appropriately. They can produce some of the sounds in human languages, it's just that they don't usually connect their own vocal sounds to the abstract concepts words represent because their braind are developed more for body language, despite some cats seeming to have a very good understanding of what we are saying.

He's intelligent and bored. A house is a very still environment and cats crave stimulus. My cats are always at the window and since I got a companion cat for my first one, she is a lot calmer. Even though they fight, it's friendl rivalry. Exotic breeds are often highly intelligent and get bored more easily.

THIS. He wanted outside this morning. Then was mad Dylan hadn't taken him outside for the birdie. He went for the balcony door after mad, but was sidetracked by the pets by Momma.
He did go out on the porch with Dylan. Hannah said it probably wasn't long enough for Russ.
Russell was promised going onto the balcony with Dylan earlier. Did that happen?

Ever since I moved in with my boyfriend (now fiancé) three years ago, I’ve tried to get his cat Taffel to like me. I don’t approach her first, but try to let her come to me, I give her snacks, I talk to her soothingly and give her lots of compliments and help her chase off unwanted admirers. If she could talk I’m still like 99% sure all she’d say to me would be “you’re not my REAL dad”. I still love her ofc that little gremlin.
I think either Dylan messed up on a request and forgot, or the green eyed monster is rearing its furry head.
What I've noticed with my cats is any instinctive thinking they do is instantaneous but the intellectual part of their brain takes a second or two to register. When I trained my cat to sit and shake a paw I had to wait for her to think about it but training her to do a natural behavior like catch the treat or jump up on command were quick.
I think Russ is just letting you know his final decision on which human is really his favorite. Mamma wins!

But he was raised by a couple of big dogs and has never been good at catting, which might explain some things 🤣 We were recently stolen by a neighbor's big holstein-spotted kitty and he seems like a good complement to them both: sweet and puppy-like to play with our big elder tuxedo, but murdery enough to stand up to the little orange monster. He stole us by repeatedly breaking into our house to announce that he lives here now, which is weird, but who am I to argue with a cat who wants to steal me? Cats! They sure do keep us on our toes, right? 🤣🤣
