    • ZONEofTECH Apple will be fine and Tim Cook is a very good CEO. Jeff Williams has been chosen to lead the design team because he is a product person (he has lead the Apple Watch project) and operations is intrinsically part of the design and product dev. Jeff will also be Apple’s next CEO! Lastly the reason Tim reacted is not because he is trying to cover something up but because it clearly was upsetting to see people make such big judgements about what they know nothing about. I think your channel is very good but PLEASE don’t slip into the media story chasing frenzy we see the internet constantly doing. Step back and research but also maybe just present arguments of different facts and scenarios and do an analysis rather than speculate and make sweeping judgements when you have little to substantiate. Rather than suggesting who you think should be put in charge - ask why Tim Cook has really done it. It will lead to more interesting analysis. Also read some Twitter reactions from ex Apple designers who explain why operations is so important with the design.

    • They probably scrapped the iPhone SE design because I bet the 2020 iPhone will have that square design.. sadly, it seems as if Apple is about to plateau in terms of design..... shrink the bezels and you’re pretty much done. They need to focus hard on the foldable iPhone! Also, give us MacBooks with thinner bezels and a reliable keyboard!

    • Well.... I think after today I am even more confused about the direction at Apple.... Killed off the 12" MacBook? Throw out the MacBook Escape? Lowering prices on MBA and MBP? Something is telling me there is a going to be a big broo-ha going on in the executive rooms. Over time we will hear the real story and until that time I just follow the news, most of it is very difficult to follow so thanks for lining up the history.

Nokia made great phones until the very end, it's just that their software became obsolete in the world of touchscreen smartphones (post-iPhone), and Nokia not being a software company, just did not have the resources to compete anymore. Companies developed more seamless designs that incorporated biometrics after Apple did it. Then they revolutionized wireless earphones by creating the design of having a charging case that magnetically holds 2 individual earbuds. Next they're about to use custom CPUs to power their Macs and ditch Intel for something more optimized for their macOS. The future is very bright for Apple

  • Jony Ive was an autonomous, untouchable employee. There was no approval authority over him; whatever he designed went out the door. He is responsible for a number of design triumphs. I remember him triumphantly showing off the iOS 7 wallpaper that quickly made so many people dizzy that they had to remove it in a quick update. He masterfully decreed Helvetica to be Yosemite's system font, which did not work out at all. He designed the fabulously popular G5 Cube and the incredibly ingenious crowd-not-so-pleasing trash-can Mac, which lost Apple a lot of business in deferred purchases. He also produced not one, not two, but three iterations of the butterfly keyboard, which obviously had not been tested by humans for usability or machines for durability Jony Ive's public experimentation with the butterfly keyboard cost Apple goodwill and again, money in deferred sales. If anyone had had the authority to check Jony Ive's work, the butterflies would never have left the net. Most of Jony Ive's designs were excellent, and even his failures showed excellent design chops, but he demonstrated that he was too introverted to listen to feedback or test his designs. He was a lone wolf, not a very good manager. Making him CEO would have been a huge mistake. Jony Ive is an excellent designer, but he is not a god, as his worshipers profess. My thought is that Jony Ive realized he was about to destroy his reputation if he continued to work without an approval and testing process, and resigned to save himself. The fact that he has no ill will to Apple, and that no one in Apple had the power to override his judgment or fire him, shows that his departure was his decision and his alone. Retrofitting himself with an approval and a testing process on his position would have been humiliating. He must have realized that he was a design genius who needed a manager, but didn't have one. So he left.

That successful ramp is what put Apple where it is today in terms of a volume product at 10x profit margin of competitors. That kind of execution impressed Steve.
