Wild Beehive in a Washing Machine

This washing machine had been repurposed and was being used as a compost bin...until bees decided to move in and build a hive there! The homeowner had lifted the lid open a few days before and was stung, so I was called to give these sweet bees a new place to live.

  • As a beekeeper who has done over 100 bee removals I want to say that this is an exceptional removable and a first class lesson. Your thorough, clear explanations and meticulous work is to be respected immensely. And your gentle demeanor is an inspiration. I’m sure the bees feel your good will for them. We all do things differently and if I left the bees as you did, I’d return after sundown so as to get all the bees into the hive and leave none behind. I would love to do that on all my removals. But most often, we don’t have that luxury and must leave when we are done removing the bulk of the bees and all the hive products. I use a bee vacuum to help with that. I’m excited to take a look at your other videos!

    • @@dirtydragon9 Spray Bee Quick into the void left from the removal. Stuff some insulation into it. Put all the brood AND bees you removed, in a hive setup close to the original bee entrance. All the returning bees will come back to this setup. Brood will attract them and make them stay. (The only home they now know) You return after nightfall when everyone is home, seal the hive for transport and take them home. I’ve mentioned this to clients sometimes, that a return trip would add to their cost.

    • which is ridiculously stupid. As a beekeeper, having your hair down is a terrible idea. As soon as a bee gets caught, it will panic and sting your head if close enough. Wearing dark clothing is also an initiation to get stung- bee suits are typically white for a reason. It looks like she can get away with it because there's a lot more she did behind the scenes before starting the camera, which probably includes a ton of smoke.

  • She narrates with the same calm energy she exudes when working with the bees. Some colonies are just chill and when you're deliberate and calm like she was, you can work without the bees getting testy. FWIW, I was out mowing and decided to pop open my split. I saw that wax moths had infested it (it was a temporary box, small colony and not very well ventilated). I set about mitigating the problem, squashing and sweeping out caterpillars and excising/removing affected frames. I replaced the removed frames with new ones. The point? I didn't have time to fire up my smoker or get on any gear. They let me work without bothering me even though it was a disruptive, even violent event for them. She knows what she's doing and as she said, she would have geared up had she needed to.

But now that I think about it, I don't know if it was bees, wasps or what. But after moving down south, and having a neighbor who kept bees, I got more used to them. Then after watching so many beehives/honey videos, the fear slowly subsided. We keep a safe distance from eachother, unless one of them accidentally drops into the pool, then I fish them out to let them live. I've not been stung once in 15 years. • I had an intense, crippling fear of bees for many, many years. It was totally irrational, I’ve never even been stung by a bee. So, last year when a small group of solitary leafcutter bees made their home in my garden, I was totally pissed. 😂 No one would come rescue them because they’re not super useful, apparently…and I was basically given instructions on how to kill them. Well, first do no harm….I take that very seriously. So, now I have upwards of 150 leafcutter bees living in my garden (which has never been healthier) and every day I interact with them, water & feed them, and I’m totally over my fear of bees. My little nieces love to come over and watch them, too. And, I’ve still never been stung. These videos have been so helpful. Even though my bees don’t have a hive, and work individually of one another, I look at them like they’re all queens. It’s stupid how much I love them. 😂🤣

    • Perhaps you could contact someone who can give you some exposure therapy. I had a pretty bad fear for a long time but I started to let it go in. My 30s I’m in my 50s now. I forced myself to just watch them on the flowers, in the yard , and then began to get closer and closer and my fear subsided. Now I enjoy photographing them on flowers. Honestly, they have no I’ll will, they don’t want to sting, they just want to go about their business. And along the way, I overcame my fear of yellow jackets and wasps, although I give them more space. If you’re allergic, then just disregard everything I said. I’d be afraid too. And I’ve been stung several times in my rather long life, and guess what? I survived! There is a product you can buy, I think it’s called Sting stop, that you can put on sting and I guess the pain stops right away. They won’t sting unless they have to. I stepped on two at different times in my life, and I got stung. And the other time there was a bee on a door handle I didn’t see, and he stung me because I put my hand over her.

I'd love to learn beekeeping just by going around with her and imitating what she does, how she does it. She's a natural with bees, and I'm not sure that can be learned (I was scared of insects as a child, thanks to my brothers teasing me by putting creepy crawlies on me). Maybe I can't be as naturally attuned to insects as she is, but I could learn to imitate her calm and respectful movements with bees. • Wonderful save! Just relocated a hive that had been abandon almost 20 years ago. What a mess, but amazing they survived that long, especially up north here. Can't say I had the same luck with stingers, but the bees are safe and happy now.

I keep a few hives as a hobby and have watched thousands of hours of bee videos. You definitely know what you’re doing and I respect you and your tactics. Have you ever thought about talking to the camera about the cutout while filming?
