Just do it. Trade John Tavares, Rielly, and Marner. Moving on from JT creates serious cap space. MM can get the Leafs some solid pieces and prospects. And Rielly could get a defensive defenceman or a forward that can score. Reilly has a terrible shot from the point. Those guys off the PP alone will improve the Leafs. I'd rather see Bobby McMann, Robertson, and Knies than those three guys.

The leafs top 3 managers have spoken awkwardly about their failed performance but not their own resignations. The top guy says he just arrived so is relying on the other 2? Changes on ice have begun in earnest among the ranks but not necessarily for Shanahan's wobbly voiced master plan. Which he is waiting to test again with new coaching & lineup.

First of all, you can't really blame Treliving for the failing of this team, wholesale. Keefe fell on the sword for Shanahan and Dubas. How much meddling Shanahan had in Dubas' moves is pure speculation. Maybe we will read about it in a memoir when he retires but by all accounts, Dubas wasn't fired, but engineered his departure. I don't see any appreciable benefit in dismissing Shanahan right now given the new "head master" reigns. He is definitely on a short leash and will have to show significant progress next season or he doesn't return. Whether he believes a new coach will be the x-factor with these guys remains to be seen and we'll know the answer this year. Brendan has stuck with his vision for 9 years now, what's one more? He believes the talent is there to get the job done and I can't say I blame him. A lot of the breakdowns this season was directly the failing of the coach not pivoting when the team suffered crisis of confidence during games or during stretches of games. Everyone says Keefe isn't a bad coach given his strong record. When you're as stacked as the Leafs are, it's hard not to have success drop on your lap. Let's see what a new coach and their vision can do with this team. Also, Babcock had possibly the most stacked team in history with those Detroit teams. I would say they rivalled the Oiler's Dynasty years so the team he had in Toronto didn't quite match up and his lack of success is understandable.
The new CEO should have put his stamp on the team. Should have gutted it. Everyone gone. But it sounds like a rinse and repeat.
I think Dubas sold Shanny on the cap going up to justify Marner $. That was the failure - if marner took Nylander money...Marner is under less pressure, and that extra $4m is a better goalie or a 2A on D.
Considering there ARE no move clauses, let's not be surprised we run it back for one more year!
Considering how that's never stopped people from being moved in the past, don't be surprised if they do get traded! Only need to look as far back as Kaberle for a Leaf with a NMC, Burke traded him to Boston.

@@nadia0701 Dubas came from the OHL. He never negotiated a pro contract until he had to re-up Nylander. Hiring an inexperienced GM is on Shanahan. Even if the salary cap rose significantly other teams would still have more cap space than the Maple Leafs.

Tavares was worth 8 M according to the 2017-18 points ranking for forwards. Tavares wanted to come to Toronto. So why were the Leafs content to over pay Tavares by at least 3 M? Of course to make more money. They looked at JT's contract as what it would bring to the Leaf's financials. By the way, because other teams were thinking about over paying Tavares more does not make it a deal to over pay him less than others. It still is an over pay. By points this season Tavares was 64th for forwards and ranked at 7 M. An over pay of 4 M. GLG Hyman ranked 8.7 M. Kadri 8.5 M. Both are under paid. Since the major players on the Leafs have NMC no major changes until July 1, 2025. MLSE and the Leafs should have been up front with this and at the very least been honest with Leaf fans. They weren't.
Next year will be a write-off... they're not getting out of those no-trade contracts, lol. They'll be back with the same 5 and need to suck it up for next year. 2-3 years they should be in good shape again.

Why don't any of these talking heads talk about Treveling and Shanahan being fired. The team was significantly worse than last year - both regular season and playoffs. The GM had the flexibility to move Matthews, Marner, or Nylander before July 1st last year and failed to act. He did nothing at the trade deadline. He did nothing about the goalie situation. Now that he has less flexibility, he's supposed to do better?! His signings were awful. Reeves was not playing at the end of the playoffs due to his complete inability to play his position. Domi was mediocre this year, cost us any chance in game 1 where we went full Kadri, and eventually was a non-factor for the series. Bertuzzi is, I think, the worst 5.5M skater I've ever seen. He constantly falls over and makes poor decisions all the time. He burned us with a few dumb penalties as well. Get ready fellow Leaf fans, Marner isn't going anywhere. My move would be to not offer him a contract at all, or severely lowball him. Let him come to you to demand a trade, or let him play out the year with the motivation of having good results for his UFA discussions in 2025 with other teams. I'm not worried about letting him walk without trading him. That's a lot of cap space. Addition by subtraction.

If you watch the playoffs you realize just how far this team is. Not even close to competing with the Panthers! Tavares, Marner is essential. Then you have Mathews, a big pillow of a player that can shoot the puck, otherwise he is not a leader and not a game breaker. Maybe one game in his career he took over a playoff game. ONE GAME IN HIS CAREER! So Leafs fans, enjoy the regular season, because thats all your going to get.
