  • I'm a retired automotive technician so take my advice with a grain of salt. When you install something forcing significantly more air into the engine (Supercharger) you immediately need to recalibrate jetting (or injector tune) to increase fuel delivery- especially on the upper half of the rev range. Bogging on combustion engines is a symptom of fuel starvation. Increase fuel delivery incrementally until the bog goes away. Your goal should be to run slightly rich to keep temperatures down and ensure you won't damage the engine. The other thing to think about is the ignition timing which needs to be recalibrated slightly for forced induction. You may need to advance it a touch. Good luck. FYI- a very cool little engine. I wish we had things like this when I was a kid.

    • The only thing I would add to that is since the oiling system in this engine is the fuel, I'd all a little bit more oil into the methanol to keep temps low, also the timing will be hard to adjust, because the glow plugs at boost tend to overheat and pre-ignite.

      @ThePower1037@ThePower1037 Жыл бұрын

    • I heard the bog as well in the intro. Was surprised about what seemed slightly poor throttle response. Generally, I expect a well tuned roots setup to be pretty snappy. But, you do have it backwards on the timing. When you compress the intake charge with a supercharger, or turbocharger, the molecules in the intake charge are closer together and this causes combustion to happen faster. Therefore, you need to retard timing from what it would have been naturally aspirated to prevent detonation. The same is true with nitros, which some would call CHEMICAL supercharging.

    • In bigger engines, bogging down at high RPM usually means too much fuel, doesn't it? Unless everything is getting too hot and it's expanding, causing internal friction? The exhaust looks pretty rich to me, too, but I'm not real familiar with nitro/gas RC cars either, certainly not anything in this caliber.

      @dlaw1954@dlaw1954 Жыл бұрын

      @billynomates920@billynomates920 Жыл бұрын
    • @@sourandjaded2586the fueling is still an issue beyond just winding the needles out. Traditional automotive carbs suffer in supercharger setups as the vacuum of the blower prevents the power valve from opening under WOT, this is due to it being actuated as the engine vacuum decreases while the supercharger increases carb vacuum as it spins. These hobby carbs don't have any of the circuitry required to properly fuel this application or make use of boost reference and winded needles will just muddy the throttle resolution elsewhere. How does forced induction increase your compression ratio? The comp ratio is set by the material properties of the engine components. Do you mean volumetric efficiency? If so it's directly benefitted by forced induction. A thicker head gasket can reduce the compression ratio which can assist in avoiding detonation. Forced induction enhances your volumetric efficiency provided you can adequately fuel the application. Literally everything hinges on the carbs.

      @jsmith1871@jsmith1871 Жыл бұрын
    • @sourand jaded Only thing I can think of is the carbs aren't designed for that much airflow and are going lean, or, the 2 to 1 feeder can't supply the fuel, might need a separate one for each. You wouldn't think it would need that much here, but who knows. Other thing is might need different glow plugs, might be blowin these ones out.

      @kleetus92@kleetus92 Жыл бұрын
    • It's not a fuel issue it's an air flow issue. The reason you can hear such an audible whine is due to back pressure in the blower case from the blower being so restricted . They made it like that on purpose and the two very small outlets from the blower are clear evidence of that . This blower was made for sound not performance . That's the reason it's bogging it's not getting enough air you can hear that the blower makes less noise at high rpm because the vacuum from the engine is effecting the back pressure in the blower it's being lowered because the engine is trying so hard to get air . If the air outlets were bigger it would breathe better but you wouldn't get the cool blower whine .

Not that it would make a lot of difference in the early going but the gear side of shaft against the smooth belt can cause a wild amount of drag in some cases. lots of fun watching , Thanks

  • Really cool build! Regarding the issues with WOT performance, there are a few things from the (big) car world that might help: Spark plug gap - When you up the boost level you normally need to close down the spark plug gap to get effective combustion. Not sure how this would work with glow plugs, do they make them with bigger or hotter elements? Also boosted motors normally run less timing advance vs NA motors, since glow plugs are always you can't adjust this but I think you would get similar results by adjusting the octane of the fuel. It's a bummer they made the pully on the supercharger so small, would have been a easy way to get more boost. You could create an additional gear box between the belt and the supercharger, to give you more ratios to play with. CNC project time!

(Counter clockwise) The low speed needle seems a tad rich and your idle could do with being slightly higher. Turn (clockwise) 1/8th But as a first start that went well. It also seems like a backpressure issue if I'm being honest. 30% is actually pretty good stuff, plenty of punch, I used to run byron in my savage and it loved that stuff. That bogging out issue definitely sounds like a fuelling issue crossed with backpressure.

You could technically install a pulley that attaches to one of existing ones on the engine, an extension of sorts. You keep the original belt track and direction of the water pump this way, and get to use your own gearing ratio for the supercharger. And I think tweaking the gearing ratio could help with the power, throttle response, bogging, etc. Keep doing what you do, you're doing an excellent job!

Also with boost on a full sized engine, you would advance the timing a bit with boost. I'm thinking that may be a tuning option here as well. I genuinely want to see the charger work on this build..

  • How much power does the little v8 actually make, for example could it move a power wheels with a toodler driving it?

  • You should put that engine model on a rc muscle car specifically a 60-90's charger and the turbo engine model on the supra mk4

  • Thats pretty sick! Back a long time ago when I used to race a t max truck I put a supercharger on a nitro motor I had in it. I could never get it to run right. It forced so much air I couldn't get it rich enough to quit leaning out. It looked cool as crap though! It wasn't a screw style more like a procharger look. Very cool my friend.
