Hey guys! Today I am FINALLY doing another baking video where I take one of my art creations (in this case one of my thrift store makeovers) and attempt to bake and bring it to life. These are always such a cluster of fails and struggles since I obviously have no clue how to bake properly. But you guys ask for it, so here it is!

Hey! my name is Moriah (pronounced muh-rye-yuh 😂 ) and this is my channel....obviously. I'm 25 and like doing anything creative...and being snarky.....just a lil. I make a lot of decorating and painting videos here. I'm obsessed with editing and adding lil bits to my videos, so if that's not your thing....oof you may hate this haha. I paint on squishies, thrift store finds, and other random things I pick up. I also love to draw, but don't expect anything too skilled, I'm not the best at that haha. I appreciate you calling out the “don’t over mix” bc despite baking most of my life I have never once been told how to tell when you’re done mixing
"until just combined" is another way of putting it. You want the dry ingredients to be combined and there to be not any separation of wet ingredients but you don't want to continue to mix after that, and you in general don't want to mix vigorously (you can mix confidently but don't go at it like you're whipping it lol). The reason is because flour once wet starts to develop strands of gluten which creates structure - which is good for bread, you want long strings of gluten in bread generally but in cakes it creates "toughness". So yeah just mix til it's all combined and you should be good, it's basically saying don't be too thorough about it or too rough with it haha and if you're using an electric mixer don't leave it running lol.

Moriah, Please do not push yourself to unrealistic standards. As a baker, it is so difficult to capture something not baked and turn into a dessert. You did an amazing job at that today by merging the realistic and unrealisticness of your two designs. Please do not feel disappointed because girl you did awesome!

Hey question to you as you are a baker! Is there a way to make cupcakes become more round instead of flat? (Like maybe using more baking soda or something?) Because I always struggle with that!
@@justme-qd6qb Cupcake should not be flat, so you're prabobly just doing something wrong... Either temperature is off, or you're overmixing your butter. You always need to preheat your oven, so that might be the case. Cupcakes should rise after 5-10 minutes and then bake slowly until brown.

I can definitely tell the difference between having a team and not. When you have a team, all of your ingredients are ready and room temperature, but when you don’t, you seem more like yourself. (The one you depict on this channel, I mean.) This is one of my favorite series, so I appreciate you doing it!!!

For future reference - I don't reccomend mixing sprinkles into the batter. There's a really high change that the dye from the sprinkles will spread onto the batter and ruin the colour. It has happened to me once before when I was making some cupcakes (it may have happened cause I mixed the sprinkles aggresively in the batter but i dont know, still be careful)

FYI: When a recipe says “do not over mix” it’s referring to the gluten in the flour being over worked and making the cake too dense or stiff. You want that in bread not cake. It basically means to try not to mix it any more than you have to. If it doesn’t give you a specific length of time to mix it for, just mix it long enough to incorporate all the ingredients and then call it good. That’s why a lot of recipes have you combine the dry and the wet ingredients separately. It results in working the gluten as little as possible so it turns out light, delicate and fluffy.

fun fact for Moriah: Types of flours do diff things, here's a list because why not.
Late reply, but what makes the difference is the gluten content! All Purpose is standard. Bread flour has high gluten content to give it more chew and structure. Cake/Pastry flour has a lower gluten content to give a softer texture.

Here is a little tip: if you have a different flavor extract then use that instead of vanilla, but make sure you do not put as much as you would when dividing the recipe. If you are not using vanilla or any flavoring altogether then replace the amount with water or milk.

for anyone wondering: to make the butter and sugar "light and fluffy" you have to mix it A LOT longer than you think (8-10 min on high speed). it should be pure white in color and feel smooth between your fingers (you shouldn't feel any sugar granules). after that, only mix long enough so that everything is incorporated to prevent over mixing 👍
For me it takes 3-4 min which is usually how long recipes tell you to mix it.

Ok honestly I've done checks, by pouring from a dry into a liquid..there's like no difference. The only real difference is a liquid also measure ounces and ml and not just cups.

moriah, ive been watching you since i was in 4th grade, im in 8th now. I always used to and still love watching your videos and i remember i would always be so happy after watching them. recently, ive not been doing well, diagnosed with depression, anxiety, ocd, bdd, and ptsd, its hard and on top of that the medication ive been taking for a year is now giving me a medical reaction because of an accidental overdose. I feel rlly hopeless and watching your vids makes me happy and makes me remember the time i was my happy self, I hope to be that girl again soon. ur vids are the first step in feeling like my old self again, take care, and ur daughter is lovely btw!

As someone who's been baking since I was 8, the butter wasn't suppose to be melted, also butter melts super fast, so if you want it warm, I'd recommend only microwaving the butter for about 3-15 seconds, also when warming up butter I also recommend cutting it after you microwave it, no judgement, you're quite new to baking, it took me awhile to get good, even now I still make mistakes. Btw I love your videos, they also make me smile, and even give me inspiration for future projects!

Next time you forget to leave the butter out, you don't need to melt it, because that will mess up the texture of the batter/buttercream. Instead just cut up the butter into small-ish wedges/slices, then beat the butter on its own until it is fluffy, THEN add the next ingredient. Hope this helps! 🫶 (fluffy= smooth, thick frosting texture)

As someone who is not a professional baker but got tips from their parents I’m going to help the people who are still reading this 1. I’m pretty sure cake flour is supposed to make your cake more fluffy but if you’re not a professional it doesn’t really matter 3:30 2. If you’re microwaving butter check it every 5 seconds if you don’t it could splatter all over the microwave 3. You’re not stupid for thinking that and it is only for flavor 5:01 4. I don’t think the temperature of the eggs matters also if the yolk gets in the bowl it’s not the end of the world 5:12 5. Over mix means you should only stir it until there’s no more flower/dry ingredients visible 6:40 6. Not for cupcakes but if you’re making cookies you can scoop out the batter with a greased ice cream scooper it makes it much easier 7:29 7. More of a fun fact, If you have your own chickens/know well where they’re coming from you can the eggs raw! 9:20 8. I don’t think anyone can (if you can tell me your secrets) 10:10 9. Edible glue? yes! 12:54 10. If the recipe seems like it’s going to be very long you can always have a baking buddy! 17:00

Hi Moriah! Just to answer some of your questions: 1. Cake flour is basically flour with lower gluten (ie less protein) as gluten is what gives bread that chewy texture we don’t want that in our cakes ergo cake flour :> 2. Vanilla isn’t merely a flavouring, but I would say is what gives most good pastries their depth of flavour, so adding half-one teaspoon of vanilla extract would bring out your other flavours more! 3. A cup of a liquid or a cup of a dry ingredient is still the same cup. HOWEVER a cup of diff ingredients (no matter liquid or dry) would have different masses as ultimately the amount of one ingredient that’s in a cup is diff to another! 4. A sure sign something is over-mixed is when there is separation instead of one homogenous mixture or when your cake comes out dense and chewy as over mixing forms more gluten resulting in that texture. Over-mixing also knocks out all the air that you’ve beaten into the batter when you creamed the sugar and butter, which also contributes to a denser and chewy texture and also a flatter top. So one way to ensure you’re not over-mixing is to stop a few seconds after all the flour has been completely mixed into the batter (I normally use a spatula so that I could gently fold the batter when the flour is almost completely mixed in for more control) Hope that helps! :D

If you watch the clock on the stove you notice how long of an effort she puts into her videos. I love you moriah😘
6:42 they say to not over mix because they don’t want too much gluten to form(when you mix the flour in and mix too much than it can get chewier)- also in recipes where you have to cream butter and sugar together I’d recommend mixing it for an amount like 5 minutes, it’ll just help the taste! This is just my way of explaining and giving a few tips for baking, you’re doing great Moriah! You have a great start for baking and could end up being a master of baking with just a bit of practice, have a good day!💚🤍
Also if you’re warming butter try and turn down the power of your microwave and that’ll make it harder to melt it completely. Again, you’re doing wonderful Moriah and always make my day when I watch your videos and hope you’re doing great!

Hi Moriah just a little trick for ya, next time if you need sprinkles on top then you put the cake(s) in the pan/tin then sprinkle sprinkles on top before you bake it 🤍
Cake flour is extra fine in comparison to all-purpose! It helps to make it fluffy and has less gluten. Also, to avoid over mixing, when you no longer see any powder/liquid that's usually enough! Over Mixing can cause a cake to come out dense

They look great! I think adding actual buttercream frosting. Then using the colored glaze on that would make them a more puffy look on top like the squishy. But honestly i wouldn't have been able to do as amazing as you did in the first place
