The notorious Group B rally monsters in action in the fast & flowing gravel roads of Finland.
Winners of the 1000 Lakes Rally in the Group B era 1983-86:
1983: Hannu Mikkola - Audi quattro A2
1984: Ari Vatanen - Peugeot 205 Turbo 16
1985: Timo Salonen - Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 E2
1986: Timo Salonen - Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 E2

the very best of them was german ;)
+Leo Darmawan For E.G,Henri Toivonen,Marcus Grönholm.
nuddekutsch Walter didnt have the balls to come to Finland , he Said he didn't like jumps
Yeah, no jumps is for track racing, rally needs jumps
Sorry, there is only one true champion name: Lord Sebastien Loeb
i was there 1983-1985, with my father, that was something very cool 8-10 year boy to be with dad. We have packed lunch there in forest.
Cool dude inwas definitely born in the wrong era of cars hahahaa
lucky you
Very lucky you

Walter Rohrl is a pussy:D
@@akustikinnala5989 kyllä oli kun ei suomessa ajanu
yea, we like driving fast in the woods not gonna lie
Rohrl was a great driver with a pussy attitude :/
The sound of the Audi Quattro 5 cylinder engine on full boost is like nothing else. It honestly sounds like a force of nature - like the drivers can barely control it.
It really does. Seeing it just fly by these crowds of people will always be insane to me. I fully get why they don't do this anymore, but holy shit is it an awesome concept. To have the autocompanies just go all out.
the delta s4 was honestly better
It has quite a noticeable roar
@@Psycho_herb All the rest were a reaction to the Quattro. Remember, when it came out, no one believed in 4W drive considering it too heavy and prone to breaking down.
@@azynkron yes, we all remember, but the delta S4 was a beast of a machine.
You can always tell when the Quattro is coming because of that squeak!
It sounds like bunch of angry squirrels fighting each other lol
Polo GTI R5 kinda reminds me of it at times
I believe its the rev-limitor, or maybe the water-cooled brakes.
@@k.stultz9255 pretty sure its the turbo spooling

one of the unexplainable things that can almost bring a man to tears. I dont care much for modern cars but this, this is just glorious. any of these over a modern supercar, no second thoughts about it.
Xc31 now just look at F1 with V6s and Pikes Peak with E-cars. Makes me want to jump off a balcony
I agree. Those Audis and Lancias are the pinnacle of supercars.
I have read somewhere that the pinnacle of humanity has been reached in the 60's . I consider Broup B Rallye the pinnacle of all Motorsports .
I would say, that even in the modern times, Rally managed to keep this vicious and wild spirit of always had. To this day rally cars are bare of any electronic, and those guys are still going flat out on any terrain.
I would gladly take one of the Lancias or Quattro over a super car
Finnish drivers dominated rally in 80's and 90's. Drivers from Finland won championship in -81, -83, -85, -87, -91, -93, -96, -97, -98 and 1999.
Also 2000 and 2002.
Then french came and won 14 straigth :D
@@rasssse92 They would't win that many times in 80's or 90's, not even close. There was so many great drivers on that era and competition was much harder.
And 60's
Lmao what's with the trumps here
Most iconic sound ever in any motorsports, Group B Audi...
I cry everytime i ear it!!!
it was a beast! still is btw.
IMSA GTO aswell :)
Colin McRae’s Subaru 22B sounded sick also lol
Is it just me or was Audi running those engines rich as hell to keep them alive?
even the 205 Turbo 16 sounds 1000 times better than any modern V6 F1
It was epic car. That and Lancia Delta S4, i had models of both when i was a child.
Todays ear gasme is non aspirated rally cars ;-)
Hell, the Metro 6R4 has a V6 and sounds miles better than a modern F1 car
@@doabarrellroll69 You were not listening

This is the first time I realized they raced Group B at night... these people were actually insane... in a badass way.
The sound in the footage of 3 different cars taking that same corner starting at 3:06 is incredible. The sound of the Quattro through the woods is terrifying
I love how the Lancia and Peugeot both looked like they slowed down before the jump, but the Audi was like "I believe I can fly"
Imagine sitting in the Navi seat ‘ how terrifying was that

I have the audio from this video burned to a CD and have it playing every time I am highway driving. Wonderful.
I'm a 26 year old guy, so I didn't have the chance to witness this time, but when I was 17, they started off a nearby rally in a city I live close to, and I got to see an S1 and two S2 there. I wasn't absolutely crazy into cars and haven't seen a rally before that day. There was one turn where there was just a concrete barrier and a fence next to a turn going away from it, so they allowed viewers to stand there, and I got the chance to feel these things from roughly 1,5m distance. They started pretty late that day, so I had all kinds of awesome sounding cars from all kind of groups going past before, theres was one older 911 which I thought was incredibly loud until that point. Then the Quattros came. I remember clear as day when the announcer said "next up are two absolute beasts" and then I already heard this monstrous roar from the other end of that parking lot where they started. Usually you could hear the starting cars a little bit, but the quattros made the fences shake we held onto from that distance already. I didn't know the car by then and was really eager what's going to come around that corner in a few moments... It was this track where two cars would drive at the same time on different lanes, then change lanes after one lap and go around again. The drivers were pretty even so suddenly there's a black S2 and the yellow HB livery S1 ABSOLUTELY ROARING sideways through the turn, kicking up dirt behind them and then lighting the cloud of dust with the afterfire from the exhaust as they shifted to accelerate out of that turn. It felt like all my bones in my body got shaken up by these monsters. It took me a good minute to snap out of the awe again these things caused me to go into. I'm still young, but few moments in my life so far stuck to my memory this vividly, and I think it's an experience I won't forget for the rest of my live. And to agree with the words of Xc31, seeing and hearing these things on video and remembering that experience, really does bring me close to tears, it's just such an awe inducing machine.
👍 yes sir, visceral and raw
2:44 Henri Toivonen on 037
I like how someone yells "TOIVONEN!" super excitedly in the back
The engine is so powerful that the mic was about to explode
Yeah, it was dangerous, but it was the best rally era ever!
Safety and regulations have really watered down motorsports
22:00 this guys had car control beyond my understanding. That drift was so damn smooth.
beyond understanding, so smooth....
That was Henri Toivonen. Genuinely made any car he drove look like it had 100bhp more than it actually had! (Watch his Lotus Sunbeam days...) So much more to come, but for Corsica SS18 1986 🙏
Legends are forever.in the year 2100and beyond.they can't pull off what rohl, toivonen etc did
I’m a simple man, I see a group B rally I press like
Good god. I'll *never* get over how great the Metro sounds. Almost like it's about to explode and shatter into a million pieces. One of the most soulful and glorious sounds ever created. So much personality. Makes me giddy like a child.
the 037 is by far the prettiest car of the lot.
In my opinion it had to be cliche but it stays the audi quattro s1
Goosebumps, tears of joy and I start giggling like a five year old watching this pure awesomeness. I always will be jealous of my father for I never have and will never ever experience this level of excitement in a rally.
Thank you on behalf of the world for not putting stupid music in this awesome video.
The 037 ‘ the ballet dancer 💃 of the forest ‘ pure poetry in motion
Ouninpohjan alkuperäinen ajosuunta oli nimenomaan tuo videolla nähtävä suunta, vielä 90-luvullakin Ounia ajettiin vastakkaiseen suuntaan nykyisestä. Nykyinen Ouninpohja on siis WRC-kauden (1997-) "tuote", originaali vedettiin eri suuntaan, ja usein vielä pimeässä.

Doc, i need to back to the 80s
the audi sounds so aggressive it sounds like it is angry because its a 5 cyl its angry that it got turbocharged it is angry because it puts down 500bhp its ridiculous
5? try like 7
wiki says in excess of 500, any source for 700 claims?
Hannu Mikkola who drove 7 years in Audi team has said that Audi had 500-700 HP depending on boost pressure. Every driver in team tune car for them self. Some might have 500 and some 700 or something between.
Sutii ja keulii joka vaihteella
The quattro is the best sounding and looks to have most power and torque of them all. Nearer 700bhp at max boost is perfectly believable.
Who are the 19 knuckleheads that gave this a thumbs down ? So the quattro was smoking heavily, what did they do.....drive it harder lol The sound they make still gives me goosebumps
Rallying is probably the best preserved form of motorsport. Even the modern cars can be heard from kilometres away and they sound like machine guns unloading when downshifting. When passing they just sound like a battlefield. The group b cars sounded like cars turned monsters, the rally1 cars sound like an active warzone. Hearing the Toyota start up in the service park was deafening. Everything fell quiet as its engine fired up into action. Legitimately sounded like a shooting was taking place 2 meters away from us
Im still listening to this wonderful symphonie whenever i can. How can a soundtrack without a conductor be so emotionally charged? It is perfect.
I've probably watched this about 10 times.

the best days of motorsport group b period
that Delta S4 launch still gave me chills 😂
I'd like to see the return on Group B. The car makers wouldn't have to build 200 roadgoing cars, maybe like 50. Engine type and displacement should be the same as the road car. With modern safety features, it should be a lot safer.
"WiTh moDeRN sAFty FeaTURES"
That pretty much sounds like modern rally
The difference in the jumps between the O37 and the Audis is very distinct. The Audis landed with a thud/bang, the 037s just seemed to just tiptoe over them, like landing an airplane.

Awesome. No stupid music or narration, sounds au naturelle.
Possibly THE BEST rally video I have ever seen! Bravo Bravo Bravo 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️👍 The two best sounds in Motorsports: that Audi Quattro Rally car and the Lancia 037!!!
The Lancia Delta s4 was a brute 0-60 in under 3 seconds and the most successful rally car in history!
Nope. You may be mixing up your Deltas: the the one that was the most successful rally car in history was the Integrale, which was a far more tame Group A car. The Delta S4 didn't win much (mostly because Lancia didn't have the time to properly develop it... Same goes for the Ford RS200).
+ClydeYellow the S4 almost won the Championship but it was used only 1 season
205 was most successful because they were first with purpose built car. Audi started 4x4 but was based on regular car. RS200 and S4 just came to late to the game
One of the best video i've ever seen! ♥
Group B welcomed some of the most spectacular rally cars the world had ever seen, boasting four-wheel-drive and in some cases over 500 brake horsepower. Modern WRC cars are capable of producing maximum outputs of more than 380 horsepower, and maximum torques of more than 425 newton metres.

@Marvdogger Cheers Marv, appreciated. For long I thought of making a new Group B vid with footage from all of the events in the calendar but then realised it would be a bit too big of a file to handle for my machinery. So I decided to stick with my favorite event of them all. Still it is a shame that 90% of the original Group B footage has either commentary or tacky music on it so that leaves the 10% to work with.
Fella, the bit at the end on the start line, pure magic, thanks again!
Bring it all back. When engines had their own difinitive sounds, sadly lacking these days.
