Mother Humpback Stays by Calf While Rescuers Free it From Shark Net

A mother humpback whale remained by its offspring’s side as rescuers freed the calf’s tail which had been entangled in a shark net. Using specialised cutting equipment, workers from Sea World Australia, Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol worked together to free the four-metre calf who was trapped off the coast of Coolangatta Beach.
A spokesman for the fisheries told ABC the mother had “pushed into the nets slightly to help keep the calf up on the surface.”
After workers cut away the mesh, the pair swam away to the South Pacific Ocean in good condition.
The incident has reignited debates over shark nets used by state governments as a preventative measure.

    • Whales have sonar, i.e. they make a great variety of clicking sounds at a wide variety of frequencies, to tell them what's around them. Perhaps nets in the water should contain some large plastic or wooden blobs which reflect these sonar pulses, so that the whales would be able to "see" (via sonar) the blobs and they would know that there was an obstacle. Probably the thin nylon fibres of the nets are invisible to the whales. If net manufacturers used these plastic balls visible to whales, the whales would stay away and the nets would not be damaged. Everybody would benefit.

    • @David 1) so what? It's obviously in a position that has the potential to kill marine animals indiscriminately. Plenty of reefs are "used for scuba tourists" and don't have nets around them. Maybe people shouldn't be diving there if it's not safe because of sharks? 2) Then maybe watercraft should not be allowed in that area. Pretty sure not killing animals is more important than someone's desire to jetski. If you're embarrased about having shark nets in your tourist photos that probably says something about your priorities doesn't it? 3) Huh? If the nets are "less deep" then the sharks can just swim right under them right? So they are pointless. This point makes no sense. 4) evidence? How do they stop rip currents, and beach erosion? This is just total nonsense. lol. A fishing net is going to stop ocean currents. Jelly fish don't attack anyone. Jellyfish don't have brains. They just float around in the water and you get their way. Lot's of jobs "feed families". Slavery fed families too. Is that a justification for slavery? You are not logical. None of your points stand up to any scrutiny. Simply say you don't care if other marine animals are killed because we want to try to protect humans from sharks in tourist areas. At least that would be intellectually honest. You remind me of a typical anti PC backlash right wing moron who thinks they are making logical points but under even the most basic critical analysis, your argument falls apart like the pathetically illogical mess it is.

    • Needless to say I don't agree. I don't care for this "fuck the environment" or "to hell with animals" approach that some people have. I think we as humans need to make an effort to work with the environment and avoid doing harmful things (such as putting up these nets). I'm no vegan. I have no issues with people eating meat (as long as the animal is not an endangered species that is). We are omnivores afterall and we need meat for a properly balanced diet. However, I don't like when people do things that are for more selfish reasons such as wearing fur. And I do view the nets as selfish. You're in the water for recreational purposes. You don't NEED to be there. And do remember that it's not just sharks getting killed by these nets. Sorry for the long rant, just trying to let you see things from my point of view. I know you probably disagree, but ah well...

      @kageroux1193@kageroux11936 жыл бұрын
    • I didn't say you did. I said I was against that general attitude that some people have. Maybe you have that attitude, maybe you don't. And I already did point out that I had no issue with people eating meat. However, there is a difference between doing things that are necessary and doing things that are unnecessary and downright destructive. But you are now simply throwing out ad hominem attacks and it's clear there is no discussing things with you.

      @kageroux1193@kageroux11936 жыл бұрын
    • I can totally understand that. I've known people like that too and it is really obnoxious. It's totally fine if they want to avoid eating meat. I've got no issues with that. But they shouldn't be trying to dictate to other people what they can put in their bodies for nutrition. Like I said, we're omnivores so meat is supposed to be part of our diet. It's perfectly natural. I only have issues if people are eating rare (almost extinct) animals. That I think it really irresponsible. But I doubt you go around doing that. lol.

We break the law we go to jail and in many cases suffer the death penalty. If you had a child and you tell him not to touch the fire on the stove, and he disobeys and touches the fire, you know what's next. He gets burn. With a disobedient sinful heart, comes an array of terrible things that fall upon us. Nonetheless, there is hope. Jesus came down to this world and lived, loved, healed, taught, suffered and died for the sins of man. If we would just open our hearts to Him and choose to love and serve Him, this world would be a better place.

We can completely avoid them by staying out of the water. Instead arrogant people think its acceptable to invade the only place they exist and then get mad at the shark. We cannot control nature, and whenever we try we end up destroying it. Shark nets do far more harm to marine life than they do good for people.

    • I agree with removing the nets, but getting attacked by a shark is nobody's fault, any more that getting attacked by wolves or being caught in the middle of a tornado is somebody's "fault". Humans are a part of nature, just like any other animal. We're not synthetic or made in a lab somewhere by alien toymasters. We evolved right alongside all the other animals on earth, so this silly notion that everything we do is somehow unnatural and separate from the realm of nature is at best ignorant, or at worst downright disingenuous.

  • My Dad and I always fished commercial with hooks straight down and never had a sea mammal get engaged with it, but we were forced out of commercial fishing by gill netters in the 70s. CA FINALLY stopped the practice a few years ago, but the damage was done to the fishery and sea mammals as well.

    • @Mystery Bag We moved from NC to the Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, Pa corridor when I was 12. I was used to clean, warm water beaches in NC and SC, but when we first visited a few New Jersey beaches in the early 80s, we were shocked to discover the requirement for beach visitors to PAY to go there, in the form of "beach badges". It was a total ripoff, considering the beaches of Ocean City NJ, Atlantic City etc, were nowhere near as clean as their NC & SC counterparts, and the water was cold, and filled with jellyfish! There was even this huge drain pipe that carried drain water from the city, across the beach and into the ocean! No idea where exactly that water came from(street gutters maybe?), but it just added to the ambience of nastiness at Ocean City NJ..... The beaches at Long Beach Island and certain areas of Wildwood NJ were half decent, but still..... The Delaware beaches weren't much better, but they are MUCH more expensive to rent or buy real estate vs the MUCH nicer oceanfront communities in NC and SC! I had 2 acquaintances whose parents owned 3 floor waterfront townhouses in Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island De, and they rented those townhouses for $1500 a week, way back in 1990! I could've rented a 15th floor ocean view condo in Myrtle Beach at that time for approx 1/3 that price, and I can promise you that there's a HELLUVA LOT more to do in Myrtle beach than in Fenwick or Bethany De! Those 2 small resort towns are pretty much devoid of anything aside from lots of townhouses and homes. There's practically no other entertainment options other than the cold-water beaches there! That whole dynamic has always been a complete mystery to me!

    • I agree with Lass. If you don't want to get bitten, don't go in the ocean. As simple as that. Your own choice. The selfishness of humanity (because recreational swimming is like soooo important) is killing these magnificent creatures. We humans should take responsibility for our own actions and change our ways for the better.
