Our underwater cameraman manages to keep his fingers intact after a disgruntled moray eel launches a surprise attack.
And there are other amazing sightings in store on this dive off South Africa’s Sodwana Bay: friendly potato bass, vividly coloured paper fish, a shy mantis shrimp, a cruising turtle and a rare encounter with a school of devil rays!

  • amazing, I find the behaviors of the moray eels to be the most fascinating. especially when they cooperate with other species to hunt, or like seen here they have a mutual respect with the potato bass

  • The two predators that were close to eachother 3:22 are actually communitcating, making a strategy for hunting prey. The big one goes above, scaring the small fishes down in the rocks to the Moray Eel, and the Eel scares them up to the grouper.

    • I watched it multiple times, if anything it looks like the small fish are attacking the eel. I could be completely wrong, but looks like the bass is intimidating the eel => swimming at it from above and forcing it to back up into the rocks. Also look at the submissive posture of the eel. Interestingly the bass puts itself directly between the human and eel (possibly protective behaviour towards the human, no idea why)

  • I'm probably not the only person who clicked on this to see the eel attack. But there were lots of lovely things in this video. The humble mantis shrimp may not be the most exciting clickbait but it's really beautiful, even with its googly eyes

  • The grouper wasn’t protecting anyone, he was talking to the eel, telling him that the divers are ok, “see? He says to the eel, they aren’t hurting me, they won’t hurt you, see how close I am to them, and I’m out in the open, not even hiding, you can relax.....” - I have seen dogs speak to each other this way, I recognize the behavior. They give each other an attitude adjustment, they live together, that grouper knows that eel and recognized it was scared of the diver. Smart fish, knew the eel was scared AND knew the diver didn’t recognize that about the eel.

  • The BASS usually follows the Eel into holes to catch the shrimp that the Morey misses when he goes headfirst into holes.

  • We call them Potato Cod in Australia, I’ve never seen eels without rows of needle sharp teeth. A ray that produces an electric shock is something I’ve not heard of. Thanks for sharing.

  • Eel and bass actually form hunting parts. Eel chase hiding fishes out to the open and bass chase fishes into cracks, while the other pair waiting on the otherside and grab the fish
