  • i lived in an all white apartment in Germany and I have to say it was my favorite place of all time. They had gorgeous wall mouldings, high ceilings, beautiful big windows and the place felt so light and airy. I have been dreaming of this space ever since but the U.S. apartments always have that hideous off-white creamy color. A white wall is so much more beautiful. I felt so refreshed compared to the houses I've had that had colored or cream walls.

    • I don’t find white linen sheets to be difficult to care for at all and mine get sweaty all the time (menopause 😖). A little oxy clean and they’re good as new. They can be pricey but they last forever. My oldest set is 15 years old. Pale blue linen wears pretty well too.

  • I’d probably add that a timeless aesthetic that just polishes the space is proper moulding. In some cases, the lack of a good moulding in either the framing of the wall to the floors or to the ceiling drives me nuts. Added bonus if there is something unique but fits well for the space, or if it serves an architectural purpose. Guess it’s somewhat close to paneling, but moulding can actually bring in character to help contemporary homes while not fighting the space. One traditional moulding/rail that has been popping up in more vintage designs I wish could extend to the contemporary field is a peg rail, there is so much potential in a feature like this as its functional and it can help simplify a design. It’s a detail that a lot of contemporary designs have the worst habit of doing is that it shows that someone lives in the space and there is thought to put in something help keep the space organized and tidy. It’s not a moulding that has to surround a room but could be a good statement piece for a wall or the blank wall at a landing spot by the front or back doors. It can be placed low enough to put in an art collection or high enough to help break up a wall. This is just an example of a functional moulding. One other aesthetic I think should be considered to be brought back in and keep it timeless is a ceiling feature: ceiling light moulding, wood beams, bead board/dare say shiplap, etc. It’s tragic that the ceiling has been neglected in regular homes, it doesn’t have to be flashy but a simple feature can improve the space of done right.

  • I agree with everything you stated, but the herringbone floor. I prefer the horizontal or vertical layout. These elongate the room. I like marble for the bathrooms, and not the kitchen. Granite is preferred for the kitchen for me. My home is done in British Colonial Chinoiserie. The amin kitchen has an exotic granite for counters. Black slate for the table set upon grey rock with grey rock overhang. One thing I think most designers on youtube do is give advice never to do something. IMO never is always wrong, and everything depends on the entire look or whole.

  • On Mid Century Modern . . . I'm not convinced it is timeless (yet) or just a retrotrend. One thing is it has been gone long enough, that a lot of the less high quality pieces have fallen apart or the like leaving us with mostly the better quality pieces, and good quality anything will always be timeless in my opinion. I don't think you are wrong about it though and it has great potential to became timeless, and there, only time will tell.

  • I do believe that small round tables with brass or iron legs are timeless, for coffee. Antiquities already proved to be timeless, by being collected. Very little rounded corners may be timeless (as the care of finnishing the piece and not as much as to loose the angle). Medium sized (as for medium people) objects my be timeless. Also white walls may be timeless as you can cover them with any objects in trend. Porcelain sinks. Traditional art (wherever people live). Photos of the dear ones in frames may be timeless (nobody thinks they should be trendy framed).

    • Oh boy, ok, worst--bricks, no, cinder blocks. Best--depends on what you are trying to achieve. Whatever only takes one hand to open or close, which means never Venetian blinds? At my place it was blinds that came with the rental until they died, and over that curtains that block the light and keep the room temperature moderate.

  • Am in total agreement, but checkerboard flooring sucked my soul a bit every time I had to play off a weird hop-scotch walk whenever my OCD self came across them😂 Unfortunately, there was a long hallway in my elementary school (where I had to step on le black tiles only….or else💀) Luckily I figured out I had an ISSUE that could be solved, as one of my best friends saw I clearly had it and finally asked me and hallelujah I took some Prozac and did self exposure therapy for the duration of 8th grade and can now walk on that beautiful flooring like a normal person. But as this comment exemplifies, the ADHD never went away🤗🙃. That sh/t has worsened the further into this adulthood situation I find myself in

  • Great video and I agree with your viewpoints. My spouse and I are buying a house and the former owners allowed their 3 kids to paint their bedrooms. There's the tacky Ferrari red, the hottest pink that ever thotted, and the electric blue boogaloo room. It's all made worse by that horrible thick orange peel wall texture which makes semigloss paint look unsophisticated in any color. The rest of the house is sky blue like an 80s bouncing baby boy's nursery. After we have the texture removed we'll paint the whole house, and then it'll be onto the primary bathroom reno. I'm curious how you feel about the wet room trend that's made it to the US. In our house there's they typical sunken tub and a rather large shower, but I hate the tile. It's just outdated. It would be very easy to demo that all out to lay and hang clean, timeless tile/stone, and then do a seamless glass enclosure for the shower. I don't know how I feel about having the tub enclosed with the shower. I'm also starting to wonder if the insets for shower products will end up making it look outdated in a few years, especially the ones with the chrome edging. I just think there's no way that look makes it past 2030. Thoughts anyone?

  • Finally some wall moulding hate. As a European who likes modern design I find wall-mouldings a bit of a hard sell. We have buildings that have wall mouldings because they always did and they are beautiful BUT this is a traditional detail, there's nothing wrong with putting it in your 60s US flat but it is inauthentic and if you've seen it in its real traditional context it doesn't look quite right IMHO.
