How the war machine took over the Democrats w/ Dennis Kucinich | The Chris Hedges Report

There was once a wing of the Democratic Party that stood up to the war industry. J. William Fulbright, George McGovern, Gene McCarthy, Mike Gravel, William Proxmire, and, of course, Dennis Kucinich. But that was largely decades ago. The new Democrats, especially with the presidency of Bill Clinton, became shills not only for corporate America, but the arms industry. The massive military budget, $858 billion in military spending allocated for fiscal year 2023, is an increase of $45 billion over the Biden administration's budget request, and nearly $80 billion more than the amount appropriated by Congress for the current fiscal year.
What happened to the Democratic Party? Why has it become impossible to question war and the massive expenditures on arms? Why is such questioning political suicide? Why can't a Democrat ask, especially at a time of economic hardship and huge deficits, how much we are going to divert to the war in Ukraine, which has already consumed some $60 billion? Former presidential candidate and eight-term Congressperson Dennis Kucinich joins The Chris Hedges Report to discuss the past half century of the Democrats, and how the war machine conquered the party.

Historically it has been the GOP and a small coalition of DNC members standing up against daddy warbucks. But until very recently, when we were "attacked". I just don't like how he portrays that democrats were historically anti-war. Which is why they portray the GOP as the SOLE warmonger profiteers. • Even Kucinich and Hedges have to make a living. They give speeches and write books, and get interviewed, but they don't really challenge the system in real constructively critical ways that can lead to political change. A lot of people have the courage to reform, they just don't have the brains or understanding, and I am not sure either of Kucinich or Hedges does anything to change that. They just tell their "customers" what they want to hear, and in turn their customers give them money for making them feel hopeful. Meanwhile things that might possibly lead to more democratic change - like perhaps Twitter, are bought up and rendered useless when they show a possiblity of bringing about change, or even getting information or ideas out there. I am sure global oligarchs all over the world are cheering Elon Musk's work and destroying Twitter, and under the absurd rubrick of free speech. No wonder the Left never gets anywhere and the oligarchs fear them and want to disempower them. Not saying this is right or optimal, just that it should be discussed openly and analyzed and a strategy openly arrived at to bring about change that helps people.

Wayne Morse, who traveled the country in 1964 speaking out against the war in Vietnam. As a child, I heard him speak, and he changed my mind. I think we never did have a real reckoning about that war, or we wouldn't be where we are today. Instead, the reaction to it was the "Me" generation, yuppiehood, and a focus on consumerism. Btw, the quote attributed to JFK was actually one of MLK's: " We must all learn to live together as brothers, or we will all perish together as fools."
