The Beatles performing “Twist & Shout” Live On The Ed Sullivan Show 2/23/64.
For the many who witnessed The Beatles’ early appearances on British television, this song is synonymous with those exciting era-defining times. The power of the band’s performances and the recording owes so much to John’s searing vocal. For their debut album, John recorded his vocal in one take at the end of a marathon recording session on February 11th 1963.
In July 1963, ‘Twist And Shout’ became the title track of the band’s first EP to be released in the UK. According to the advert on the front of New Musical Express, it was “The record you’ve been asking for”. A week after Twist And Shout was released it made the EP best-seller list and a week after that topped the same chart staying there for ten weeks. This clip was videotaped in the middle of a six-night run at the Odeon Cinema in Llandudno, North Wales.

    • It sounds nearly identical to the studio recording in which John had once mentioned that it was the last song of the recording set and his voice was was going out on him. I think it just added to the exuberance or vibe of the song. Lennon didn't have a voice like Sinatra or Elvis, but he had a voice that was like no other at the time. That's part of what made him so great. McCartney has a unique voice of his own also but Lennon's leads are BY FAR my favorites.

      @bluepinkman4785@bluepinkman47854 жыл бұрын
    • @@bluepinkman4785 ye back then they didn't have amplifiers loud enough to be heard over the screaming girls and the Beatles were getting frustrated so they decided to just stop as well as the fact that a lot of their later songs were recorded with multiple different tracks and instruments which made it difficult to perform those songs live. Also after John Lennon famously said the Beatles were more popular than Jesus, Americans stopped coming to their shows so audiences were often half full so the band made the decision to stop touring.

And THAT is why the buddy-duds hated the Beatles and rock music, eventually burning the records in a Taliban way to purify the planet of great music! A reaction and threat to the Christian fundamentalist churchh. Aw, the excitement of a new Beatle LP to bring home from the store and hear the songs before you heard them all on the radio. 45's and 33 LP vinyl records - still the craze after more than 60 YEARS. Best to hear all such great popular music young including Elvis, who the Beatles were not keen for nor was Elvis keen for the Beatles who came and visited and essentially were ignored. Btw, compare the Elvis rendition to how Joe Cocker cranked it up, and you're see how tame Elvis was! George came to love his songs being sung by others, and who is known for that??? Joe Cocker who is adored in Europe big time - check out the big back up band he recorded on video on KZhead. Nobody can compare with how Joe give his whole heart and soul for the audience. Nobody even tries to best Joe Cocker, back then and nowadays. Yes, Boomer that! One essential part of music never gets appreciatee and it would never happen but for one group of people. Guess! The fans, the audience who would have to "hear the music" deeply, fully. No audience, equals NO MUSIC. Think there's no Muse behind the music? Ha!

So let me see if I understand correctly. They performed the show to be aired on 2/23/64 first in the "afternoon" New York time on 2/9/64. Then, later that same 2/9/64 night, they performed the show that aired "live" before the record breaking TV audience? Therefore, they would've had to have performed that show at around 10pm New York (est) so the west coast viewers could see it at around 7pm (pst) on CBS? If I'm correct, this same time slot would apply to the Miami show on 2/16/64.

      @oldiesgeek454@oldiesgeek4547 жыл бұрын
    • +Mark Mullins I just thought of one last thing. I'm wondering if at least some of the people in the studio audience on 2/23, were disappointed that they didn't get to see them perform live and in person. Instead, they were treated to a taped recording from two weeks earlier shown on the studio TV monitors. Meanwhile, the people watching at home just assumed it was live.

I was the first, along with millions of other teenagers, the night of February 23, 1964, watching the Beatles perform five songs on the Ed Sullivan show. I was 15 years old and the still point in the turning world filled with rock and roll music forever. Dad: (looking curious and mildly perplexed) glances from the TV to me, to my mom, to the TV... My mom: 'Yeah, yeah, yeah' - is that what they're singing? What does that mean? Me: It means 'Yeah, yeah, yeah,' Mom. Dad: looks at me, at my mom, at the TV, at my mom, at me .... The Beatles had landed.
