Cheetah jumps into safari car, forcing man to freeze in place for 10 minutes
A spring break trip in the African nation of Tanzania turned wild when a cheetah jumped into a group's safari jeep. The guide advised them to freeze in place for 10 minutes until the big cat left.

This same thing happened to my dad and his friends on a wild life tour in Iran 17 years ago, but he recalled the cheetah as totally harmless. If anything, it just wanted attention. It jumped into the topless Safir jeep and had a seat right next to my father, and rested its head on his shoulder. It was crazy. I’m mad jealous to this day that I wasn’t there. I was only 5 years old at the time🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️😩😩

Cheetahs have a long history in ancient Egyptian and Middle Eastern cultures of being captured as cubs and being raised as hunting companions and de facto house pets. They adapt well to human environments when raised in captivity, and behave like very large housecats (arguably better behaved than some domestic cats), but they also have a penchant for marking their territory with copious quantities of urine, and that's a very tough habit to break them of. A quick google search reveals that cheetah attacks on humans are very rare in the wild, and apparently there are no recorded cheetah-on-human fatalities (remarkable, if true). Humans have a lot more to fear from wild lions, leopards, tigers, jaguars and pumas than wild cheetahs. That said, these are wild predators with good-size teeth and cat-quick reflexes, although their claws are dulled by running, so are not quite the razor-sharp weapons of other large feline predators. Obviously, startling a wild cheetah in the confined space of an SUV is probably a bad idea, as the animal may attack out of fear. This video of a wild cheetah in the back seat is remarkable. Clearly the cheetah is well aware of the human's presence in the front seat, but seems to be more interested in using the SUV's leather seats as a scratching post. I can only imagine that this particular animal has lost a substantial portion of its natural fear of humans and vehicles by virtue of their presence having become common in its territory.
A cheetah coalition is still dangerous though. It's a group of like 3-6 cheetah brothers and they can indeed hunt humans though that still would be rare.
Sorry to disappoint y'all, but cheetahs do not adapt well at all in captivity. Please do your research.
Also they're definitely not "arguably better behaved....than domestic cats".
@@rex-up9ln That "y'all" was unnecessary. I said nothing about cheetah breeding well in captivity. I was just talking about how a group of cheetah brothers is still dangerous.

This is relatively common on safari in the Serengeti. Cheetah's are curious, intelligent creatures and also like to survey the landscape for prey and predators. You often see them perched on higher ground so they can see further across the landscape. A tourist jeep is just another platform for them to perch on to look around. It's only a young cheetah, you can see the fluff in the back of its neck, which disappears when it matures. The younger cheetah's are often more curious than the adults, and it also shows that they are used to seeing the jeeps, so aren't afraid of them. Whilst these beautiful creatures are still wild animals, they don't pose a threat like lions and leopards and I don't think there are any stories of them killing humans.

Cheetah would have got angry If It was a jaguar car
Hhahaha. The guy looks spooked... He does not have to be. Cheetahs are very much non-aggressive and don't hunt humans. These look curious and use higher ground to see over the plains for better hunting; termite mounds, trucks, jeeps, whatever. They look young as well; recently removed from their mother I bet. Maybe 2 years old. Cheetahs LOVE to play with things and curious around that age. There was little risk with these cheetahs and are EASILY spooked away. Search online for game range cheetah encounters. Leopards and lions would be different.
Dolph C. Volker true, only lion, tiger, polar bear actively hunt humans...
Dolph C. Volker oh stop, a wild animal is a wild animal. you have no clue exactly when or why any wild animal will decide to attack. glad he respected the animal and stayed still.
When a few pounds cat gets angry and hisses at you, you get scared shitless regardless of the fact that you may win the fight and having a big few hundred pounds cat startle you from behind is something straight out of a horror movie. I say that because i used to live in the village before coming to US, and once, i came across cheetah when i was in the river filling the water gallons, god damn the details in his eyes, tail, his paw oh god i literally stood there like a statue and trust me they look so big and muscular when they are actually in front of you (i can only imagine the horror of a lion tiger bear staring at you from the front). There were four big stray dogs behind me (there were no small breed dogs in my village) so maybe that's why he backed slowly but ever since that day, even seeing a cat's tail scared me. I love all cats and dogs btw and i would probably cuddle a cheetah cub but it's untrue that they will mind their own business upon seeing you; it all depends on their mood. They used to regularly come around human settlements and prey on our dogs and cattles. The point is, they are much more intimidating than we could imagine when seeing their whiskers and mouth vibrating in front of you.
That was long but had the urge to share the story of their magnificence.
Haha lol, this Cheetah, is a good one, he just wants to play, and still seek man for attention. . But I wonder He drives an open car, he asks for problems, if it had been a lion, tiger, he would have eaten the man.But I will also be afraid and stiff
Omg!! That is so cool, but so scary! I'm glad you survived this close encounter. Yikes!!
Three cheetahs are more than one. kzhead.info/sun/q7pwgaiesXqtoKc/bejne.html
I can understand this reaction with a wild lion but the cheetah is clearly very chilled out. I mean no need to swing around and scream at it but I don't think he needed to freeze in time lol
cheetahs are known to be very shy. so that was amazing. so cute. I don't think the cheetah was fooled that he wasn't right in front of him. it can freaking smell him...
its not about making him think you're not there, but rather not doing any weird movements to scare him and end up in a weird situations. But actually cheetahs are harmless so
Yeah that's not what the video was inferring. Cheetah definitely knew he was there, he was staying still so that the animal didn't get startled, provocted or show any interest in him. Edit: just realized it's a 4 year old comment.
Yeah, that's why he was licking the head rest! Yum.
Cheetah: “Hey, nice car! I especially like the sunroof. “Would you mind driving me to my friend Lenny‘s den?”
There has never been a single documented case of a cheetah attacking a human in the wild. The guy need not have worried. Cheetahs are well known for being quite docile.
Cheetah: *Meow* Man: I was never so scared in my life.
Sitting still didn't do jack. The Cheetah was WELL aware of the guy right in front of it, it just didn't care. It was just hoping for free food, like the 9001 idiots who drove by over the years, had been giving it. Know why there are _"Don't feed the animals"_ signs in certain places? This is why.
Daniel Renard Keeping still wasn’t about trying to hide, it’s about not startling/threatening the animal until it lost interest and left. Also I kind of doubt it was looking for handouts with how much more interested on that gazelle and chewing the seats it seemed. Might be curiosity, or seeking shade. Who knows really
smart observation
i understand his point tho sitting still didnt determine his fate being calm did becuz the cheetah was very well aware im sure he can hear and smell that mans breathe trust me it depends on how they feel generally speaking.
Lebron James And Not moving around and staying calm makes the cheetah a whole lot less likely to “feel” like attacking. It’s basic common sense
What would you have done in that situation, wild life expert?

@@buttermoment2748 Lol Cheetahs are calm cats. They won't do that unless you attack them first
Cheetahs are the least aggressive of the big cats. Pretty calm, actually. Still, I would respect their space
@@buttermoment2748 cheetahs are pretty weak (compared to the other big cats) and chances are, this guy could've taken on the mom with only a few scratches at most. The mom would also just distract and act tough until her Cubs got to a safe spot and then she'd begin to retreat. She knows that trying to fight would waste her energy, and she wouldn't be able to hunt for her Cubs. She also knows that if she did fight, she would most likely get injured, which even if she just fractured her leg itd still limit her hunting and could lead to starvation for both her and her Cubs. I'm not saying cheetah can't do serious harm to a person, but the chances of it happening are super low
He honestly wasnt in any real danger. Like he said, if he startled it, then maybe. But most likely not. If I was to have a run in with any wild big cat, a cheetah would be the way to go.
Technically Cheetahs aren't even a "Big Cat." They're actually the largest Lesser Cat. Same type animal essentially as a House cat, just bigger. Mind you, wild animals always deserve respectful treatment.
Cheetah attack humans but not eat them
Cheetahs tend to be more docile, and don’t attack humans unless they’re threatened. Not always the case, but still. And besides, it seemed more interested in the seat then the human
@@lexoco1166 wrong. cheetahs won't even attack a human unless it feels cornered. Cheetahs will always run rather than fight if given the option. because they are loners, they cannot afford to become injured because it is likely a death sentence to them.

Then why drive around the safari with such an open vehicle?!
I guess it doesn't get hot where you live.
Whatever. I've lived where it's hotter and a hot breeze is better than no breeze, and it will always be hotter with the windows up because that traps body heat and heat from the engine. You would be surprised what they don't have in Africa.
Scarlette, of course they do have air con in SA, its deadly hot but he could have had the windows nearly up. its just these kind of autos are cool looking for safaris
Flacid House oh yeah sure that totally justifies the act of approaching wild animals with an open vehicle. I'd rather get eaten alive instead of bringing a car with windows and closing them only when an animal approaches.
