Sandblasting a rusty old pocket tackle box

If I had a sandblasting cabinet, my husband would have to _winch_ me out of the shop. There'd be no end to the things I'd find to blast clean. 😃

Now of course it’s restored, but I kind of like the rusty color better 👀

This is one of those tools I'm realizing I probably couldn't own, because I would get distracted while sandblasting something and just start shooting sand at the sand to see what happens, and before you know it I've sandblasted a hole in something

I love my sandblasting box, it's from Harbor Freight and works great for what I need it to do. Probably wouldn't recommend it for daily use but I use it 3 or 4 times a year

When I saw it turning white I was like "oh they must be spraying some stuff on there to clean it and then they'll do the sandblasting" and then I realized THAT'S HOW IT LOOKS UNDER THE RUST AND PAINT

If the box had lead paint, any special precautions needed with the waste material in the sand blasting Machine?

How did you get your sandblasted to work so well, I am having so many issues. Hooked up a dry filter still not enough changed to gravity feed still not enough. I'm trying to restore a dirtbike and could really use my sandblaster

Hey, I know holding the nozzle close makes the rust and paint go away instantly, but if you look at the finish, there will be darker strokes where you held the nozzle closer

These tins were mass produced and made for many things. I have a Craftsman 1/4" drive ratchet and socket pocket tin that looks identical except for the name stamp

Pity, the original with the rust and map inside the lid had character, gave the thing its charm and place in history. Now it's just another "restored" object amongst all the others.

What kind of paint is that that they used?

Using garnet medium? That stuff works but its awful brittle and turns into powder super fast when used on steel. I used to blast railcars we used garnet medium on stainless steel railcars.

That box was valuable with the patina now the patina is gone and the box is invaluable

Almost looks like you're painting it until you do the inside.

That patina looked amazing you should of just clear coated it and keep it original like it was. You will never get it back now.
