Scissors Restoration [Decay Stopped - Black Scissors]
In restoring these rusty scissors, I used simple techniques and machinery. To restore these old scissors to their "forgotten shine" I had to derust them with a needle scaler, soak them in rust solvent, sandblast them, grind them, powder coat them and make a new screw on the lathe. If you don't have a sandblasting booth and a lathe, there are plenty of other ways to get where you want to go. I especially liked being able to work on the lathe again for this restoration. I bought these old rusty scissors again from a flea market internet site. Please be sure to also note that this video is not just to quickly show someone how something works, but also to relax and escape from the daily grind!
▬ What did I do ?! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The scissors were in very poor condition, I suspect the seller (who I bought this item from) found it deep underground. In the first step I removed the rough dirt and rust with the needle scaler. Following that, I put the old scissors in rust remover and sandblasted them. With sandpaper I sanded the inside to make them even again. Now I coated the parts with a black powder coating to protect the scissors from future rust. I painted the sanded surfaces with cold bluing to prevent rust from occurring there as well. Since the old bolt (which held the old scissors together) is no longer there, I made a new bolt on the lathe. These parts I boiled in brandy vinegar, so that they are also protected from external influences.
▬ Good to know ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
I used the following tools: Needle scaler, hammer, pliers, propane torch, pin punch, rust remover, sand blasting cabinet, corundum blasting media, file, vise, sandpaper, clamp, tape, knife, Powder coating equipment, compressor, oven, cordless screwdriver, drill, Isopropanol, cold bluing, brush, lathe, lathe chisel, oil, Internal thread tap, external thread tap, hot plate, spirit vinegar, glass jar, tweezers

I like that the gloss black paint makes them look like they're made from obsidian. It's nice that you made a feature of their rough, pitted metal than tried to grind it all away into dust, leaving barely any scissor.
Thank you ❤️ most others say it looks unfinished, I say it has ✨character✨ U-U

Truly amazing. The black colour gives it a way better depth sensation, and also it looks kinda cool with those deformities. Very good job. :) Edit: it's sad to see many people commenting stuff like "Waiting to see the full restoration". There's literally nothing else he can do. The scissor were already in a very bad state, and the results is already excellent.

Yes I thought the same! It somehow looks cute, with a lot of character. Looks like a piece that will be kept in the family couse it's special :)
I don't know why I find it satisfying when people fix objects or clean them, when I hate doing that.

Umm well seeing the result I conclude that it was beyond restoration and there was nothing you could do otherwise!
Pésima restauración
Me to lol
Any proof that you guys could’ve done better?
@@davidw.798 I think they are saying that given the level of restoration achieved in the video, and that this was done by an exceptionally skilled person, that if they couldn't have been restored further here then they weren't worth restoring and equally that no one else would have been able to restore them further either. So they are implicitly saying they couldn't have done any better hence your question doesn't quite make sense.
Could of welded missing sections this wasn't beyond restoration
Personally I like watching old things made like new or functional but with signs of age, even if there is no ‘financial gain’ or if it’s ‘cheaper & easier’ to go get a new item. Sometimes the journey is what’s important, & a lot of people seem to forget that nowadays.
True words! Thanks very much! 🐢
I have a similar pair. They used to be wonderful. Then, I was in an accident and neighbors, helping me get back into my house in a wheelchair, moved my scissors and many of my belongings to the back yard... inexplicably leaving them uncovered. I still have those rusty scissors. RIP.
I love that while you made sure they were in perfect working order, you didn’t “over” restore them to look aesthetically new. They still look like they’ve been torn from a page of time, and that gives them some really nice sentimental value to know they’ve been around so long and still work.
Something poetic about something useless for decades suddenly being useful again, through someone else’s hard work and dedication. What’s he get out of this? Just a working pair of scissors.. but those scissors just got a second chance at life.
ㅈ
I thought they might have fallen apart after you gave them that bashing at the start. Very interesting project. I don't think I have ever seen a pair in such bad condition as those. Nice job giving them what life they have left.
Thank you very much for your feedback!🐢
Right, even though they still don’t look great, doing this must have still been fun and that’s what matters most
Vu l'etat de ces scisaux au départ, le résultat est presque miraculeux. Bravo pour votre patience et votre courage.
Thank you for explaining what you’re doing and why it’s important. I watch a lot of restoration videos and I’ve only just found out what bluing liquid is after watching this

Though I find your restoration attempt admirable I have to say that those poor scissors would have been better off melted into new scissors but that is just my opinion you did do your best on these scissors so again you work is very admirable
No ur right. I hate when they "restore" stuff like this and act like its restored because then when regular everyday people go to a restorer to get something restored the restorer can act like this an acceptable restoration.
wow
@@columbusohio299 - You did a better job fitting the word "restored" six times into a single sentence - than the guy did on these scissors
@@tomsheets6399 did i use any of them in the wrong context or anything? Were u unable to understand my point? You get restore, restored, restorer, and restoration are all different words with different meanings? One is a verb in present tense, one is a verb in past tense, the others are nouns, one describing a person. Its funny how describing my complaint about this i would need 4 different versions of a word to convey my meaning. Sure i could of used other words if i was a writer writing a book but for a comment on the internet its best not to assume that everyone reading it is going to understand the synonyms for a restoration topic. I mean my first use of restore was in quotations meaning that i was implying the use of the word restore wasnt the correct use by the channel in the first place.
@@columbusohio299 dawg why you arguing about english 💀
Sometimes you do things that really don’t make much sense, because you’re curious to see how it turns out. The fact that they work at all is something of a minor miracle.
I love your videos. I spent a significant part of my life serving in the US Navy. That "needle scaler" - we used them regularly in the Navy. We called it a "needle gun". Thanks for another fascinating restoration video. I really admire your skill and attention to detail. Bravo Zulu!
Thank you very much! Yes in Germany it is also called "needle gun" literally translated, but the official English name for it is probably "needle scaler"?! 🤷😅🐢
Столько труда и средств в ножницы вложить. Я работаю часто ножницами и понимаю, что этим ножницам поможет только зелёная краска. Покрасить и выбросить в траву, чтобы никто не нашёл больше.
You could have encased the handles and outside of the blades in epoxy to give a smoother and more comfortable surface to handle.
I agree. At the minute it still looks unpleasant.
Great job 😄 I actually like the no talking with random sounds. Creepy but in a funny way. The first time watching one of these videos, I had to make sure my sound was working. Glad we got to see them cut!
I'm so, so happy that you left it rather pitted and worn down and just repaired it enough to be functional and still beautiful, in my own opinion. I'm tired of all the channels that breaks things down and build them back up artificially until you cant ever tell that it was ever flawed or restored in the first place. I know many people like that kind of thing, but I find it gorgeous when you can see the life something has gone through, the damage and wear and decay it has suffered, but you get to see how someone has loved it enough to bring it back from the brink of destruction while still letting it be its own unique item. I find the finished result perfect in it's own imperfect way.
Thank you for your wonderful comment! I'm so glad you liked it so much! 🐢
I got shocked before I saw your restoration technick RESPECT😎😎😎
Since I love collecting scissors and use very old scissors as I work with a lot of different types of mediums. Those scissors are “bookbinding” shears and that’s why they’re riveted and not screwed, and have the one blade flat. They cut heavy materials. I would have been surprised if you were able to restore them to working condition (able to cut leather and bookbinding board). As is, they’re a nice decorative piece! So much better than rusting and disintegrating, lost to time.
This made me emotional. I’m so happy they were able to cut paper again, after all this time. It made me very emotional in a weird sort of way. It was beautiful. Thank you you pure soul.
Напрасный труд! Но мастер замечательный!!!

I have scissors just like those (but no rust) that I bought at a yard sale for $1. Based on the maker's ID, I dated the scissors to circa 1850, Sheffield, England. The only problem with this particular pair was the original fulcrum bolt was gone, and somebody had replaced it with a short machine screw and a wingnut a long time ago.

Lo vi completo, no es lo que yo esperaba, creo que se pudo haber trabajado mucho más en ellas. En fin, el punto del video es que ver el proceso sea satisfactorio, y lo es.
من هم همین نظر را دارم
As impressed as I am that they even opened, let alone survive the rest of the restoration process, I feel like the only way to get them to a point that everyone would be happy with them is if you built up the metal to the point where there would be more new metal rather than the original metal. So that would kind of defeat the purpose. On a project as small scale as this, it was probably best just to melt the scissors down.
This had to be done for the love of doing! Congratulations, you are amazing!
