What would your advice be to a young person who's inspired by your videos and wants to live a life like this?
It is a shame that you have a lot of Mimosa on your land it seems. It is a real plague. The old 'ruins' are just hastily built farm work buildings with those terrible blocks that are often on industrial style workshops etc.
I never grow tired of sitting behind a desk and watching people do hard labour. Keep up the good job.
So much more fun watching people work. Lately I've been watching lawn mowing videos haha. I hate mowing my own lawn though...

(not as rough and I have no RUINS) but yeah.. neighbors with tractors helping out.. getting everything squared away again.. It takes a while (been 3 years now.. a lot of stuff still not done) hahah..
The dedication to pizza is inspirational
The first time I went to the Kalalau Valley, it was the day after the rangers were out there making arrests and destroying camps, which means the community pizza oven was smashed into pieces. By the time I got to the valley the next day at ~4pm, they had already built a replacement.
I love what you guys do! As a 20yr old who's lived in the American suburbs all of my life, it's only left me depressed and my mind saturated with entertainment and unrealistic standards. I don't want to work a 9-5 job and hustle for a corporate job only for my efforts to be underlooked. Raising a family with rising expenses and political tensions in American suburbia is highly unrealistic for me and that's why I'm inspired to be doing what you guys are doing!

You work for yourself and you take 9 to 5s to build up the capital to invest money or to be able to take loans. Unless you can start the next big start up tech company or something else, you should thank god for having jobs in your area! That's what will allow you to buy the piece of land that you want so that you can turn it into your dream property. I leave in one of the most remote areas in the country side of France, sure you don't get all the annoyance of cities and urban centers, but you won't get hired for your qualifications and payed for what you're worth to a company in a 2 hour circle by car. You have to choose at some point and I wouldn't change it for anything, but you can make out the most of where you are! Cities get you a lot of opportunities, the country side a clearer mind, places to recharge and less distractions. There will always be something to complain about wherever you go. But you have to start where you're at to get where you want to be. Imagine what you want, plan it and execute, you'll get there sooner or later. Doesn't matter when it happens, the key is to not stagnate and to keep moving towards a goal.

@@occulte2501 it’s not hard to build some passive income. Eventually you can live off multiple streams of income. Working for 45 years and retiring for a measly 200k isn’t my dream life…
When you clear the areas around the stream and ponds, make sure you leave plenty of shade trees so the water doesn't heat up too much on the hot days and negatively affect the biodiversity of the area (frogs, turtles, etc). Also, hot water has the potential to grow a toxic algae which can make people and animals severely ill.
exatly what i thought plus in summer it will evaporate quickly because its now on the sun and not protect by the natural shad

I’m reading all the comments and there are so many people that are helping you understand what you’re cutting down and what things could be used for. What a wonderful response from strangers. This needs to be on television.

Oh hell, I WISH stuff like this was on tv more! I'd watch the hell out of it! :D Like, have you SEEN the absolute dribble that's on these days? Honestly nothing worth watching. We tend to either DL shows or movies from the internet to watch, or simply turn to the internet directly for entertainment, or we'll play a computer game together....because current tv viewing is rubbish.
Kind of makes you wonder what the land looked like before it was abandoned and what each of those buildings were used for/looked like back before nature started to reclaim them. I always enjoy learning about the history of a place.

Great, but just a word of warning - those shrubs and trees you remove from the swamp/wetland, think of it all as interconnected. Completely stripping it will mean it may dry out or reduce water quality (and impact biodiversity on your land). We are rejuvanating a small swamp near us (that only filled in winter). Plants around the edges and beyond plus some timbers to encourage frog life - it is now filled more in summer.
Also don't just go into a swamp without checking the water. Could be parasites or flesh-eating bacterias.

The helping of ones neighbours is something so special in small communities. People in big cities are living on top of one another and most wouldn’t even know if their neighbours passed away. Let alone what they do on a regular basis.

Between you guys and The Nomadic Movement, I get a ton of videos and exposure to folks who move out of their home countries and start from scratch. I love it and I wish I could also do this.

"The pizza oven is set up right here, in the middle of basekamp. So we can eat as much as possible. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, midnight snack." Now this is the kind of planning I can really get behind. It's all about priorities.
I hope they soon find out that they can bake bread, make all kind of oven roasts and gratins in a pizza oven :D
lol i see what they did there. nobles paying off the land by housing a peasant work force recruited through KZhead and paying them in pizza.
By removing all the foliage around the stream, you just shortened it's life significantly. Without roots to slow the water down, it has no way to stay on your land, it'll just run dry. You must build in natural blockages, stones, fauna and more to keep the water from dashing away... can have small sections of free flow, but they must be shored up every few meters.

Making friends with the neighbors! Community is crucial, and it's great that you and they are helping each other out.
You would be amazed at how many foreigners buy properties in Spain, Portugal, Italy or wherever, inspired by (among others) these KZhead videos of french castles and italian villas, and then they live isolated from local life because they don't learn the language and don't make the obligatory effort of adopting the local customs. Plus most times rural people are not as friendly and welcoming as foreigners dream in their fantasies. Source: I know a bunch of british living in Spain and have family in Italy who know a bunch of british and americans living there. Most of these people only interact with their compatriots.
@@Davidman3976 Colonizer races do be doing that. British be coming to Malaysia, my country, to live here in their big fancy houses and not interact much except w their compatriots as well.
It is the same with foreigners here in Austria. They stay mostly with their people, it is also a problem of language, but also the of culture and that the Austrians are not very friendly and inviting to these foreigners.

Northern Portugal never fails, when it comes to hospitality. Even in humble households, when visiting, they'll provide the best wine or cheese they have, cook you something and treat you right. Glad to see you like it here in Portugal. Best of luck for the both of ya in this awesome project :D

I love that! I didn’t know the Portuguese were so hospitable 🥰 It reminds me of how people are where I live. If you were a guest at my grandparents’ house, you would immediately be offered coffee, food, soda, beer, etc. They would basically offer you things until you eventually said yes to something 🤣🤣🤣 They made sure you were content. Then they would talk your head off. They weren’t rich, but they would give you the shirt off their back if you asked. My dad made a lot of money, but my grandma would still try to force me to take her few little dollars when I was little. I remember always having to tell her no, then she would make me take it, and I would wait until she wasn’t looking, then shove her money back into her purse lmao! No way was I taking her cash lol. I miss them 😭💖
Wish America was more like that. You'll get it in the south out in the country but that's pretty much the only place left where people look out for their neighbors and help eachother thrive

If you need a way to keep a roof cool in the summer and warm in winter, I think a living or green roof could be a solution (plus the plants on the living roof will absorb some of the rainwater which would keep the ground around the structure from swelling with excess water). Best of luck with this project!
Gotta keep in mind theyre also heavy though so you need to design around that

@@Anayalator98 Idk I've seen a video where a guy used a shipping container for a bunker, and the roof started to buckle inwards with only 18 inches of dirt on top. Those containers are insanely strong on the corners, but aren't meant to take weight on the sides

I love how your camps are using clean energy and recycled stuff and it's great to watch how "earthship" this camp are
Great job! Amazing progress. One thing that stands out to me is the recycled plastic roof. If you don't coat it in a UV resistant paint or coating it is going to crumble to bits of plastic and pollute your land before long. Consider giving it a coat!

This is beautiful. I'm a 40yr Carpenter. I'm ready to through the utility bills out and get my backpack on. I hope once I find my land I still have the strength to become self sufficient and live completely off grid.

This is amazing and so inspiring. It definitely makes you appreciate the things we often take for granted, but it's also great to see the results of such collective hard and what can be achieved with nice community of welcoming neighbour's. I'm inspired and encouraged and may use this as a template when exploring opportunities to move abroad from the UK. I'm looking forward to season 2! 😊🙌🏾

I cried when you planted the garden! This is such an interesting project. So strange to think of what people used to do normally to survive as a special project, but it is nowadays. This is the European version of the American tiny house investment projects I was just watching. Instead of just focusing on a profit you seem to be actually building a real home and community.

Those trees being cut in the opening scenes look like acacia dealbata, a great plant to have growing as it has so many uses. It's great firewood, it coppices well (Not the greatest attribute if you're trying to get rid of it.), it's a legume so is a nitrogen fixer (Works great with the coppicing as the relationship with the bacteria breaks down and the stored nitrogen is released into the soil and made available to other plants.), great for some simple structures such as yurts (Can grow nice and straight. Also looks like you used it for garden edging.), and can provide an amazing amount of mulch to feed other plants.

Looking for land now with a goal to move there within 6 months. I've made a living on the internet for 25 years, living off grid feels like the perfect way to balance things out. I'm so ultra fed up with the direction society is headed, and I refuse to become an old grandpa stuck in suburbia yelling get off my lawn lol. Thanks for sharing your amazing progress.

im an urban design architect here in the states and its just great seeing this come together. Every little piece working together to add comfort and quality of life to what is effectively a homestead. I can see so much potential for this to take off and effectively become a modern villa. Takes a lot of work, time, and money but you seem to have that. Looking forward to seeing more.
modern villa? fuck that. semi-natural building is the better way to go and switching to permaculture in your garden is a favor to yourself and nature
@@NakedAvanger hows that exclusive to the modern villa idea. I think your confusing villa with estate. Villas were small farming compounds. A villa will have local production and many housing units to support itself and its community. While not as established and incorporated in trade as a town, it was not uncommon for villas to sell overproduced items (wool, textiles, or crops) to nearby towns. permaculture and hugelkultur are just techniques and should absolutely be used in any and all urban garden or new agriculture set up. As for simi-natural buildings, again ya. not mutually exclusive. This project is using combinations of containers and rebuilding ruins while using locally sourced materials so I'd say it fits that better than most places. You don't have to call it a villa but it is very much like a modern take on that idea considering how they are planning to reconstruct the large ruin. With the exception that its likely where they (the owners) will live full time as opposed to just one of many.

This is my first time discovering this channel and video, from the looks of it is seems as if they have created their own Utopia; or what seems as the pre-sequels of one. I have always dreamed of living in a utopia like this ever since I was a kid. My parents always taught I was using too much imagination and should just stick to reality. The reality that they wanted me to live in is go to school, get a job, get a wife, have kids and die old…I mean where is the fun in that? I told them I always wanted to buy land make something out of it, you have inspired me once again. I love this. This is a life.

Yeah you'll need the roughly half a million dollars to undertake an operation like this. You'll need to make A LOT of money before something like this is viable. It's all day work, so you can't have a traditional job, so you can't get a loan to do it. So you'll need to be fairly wealthy, and extremely liquid. Your parents told you that it's a fantasy, because it is.

I really appreciate your hard work. I did this too, on 16.9 acres of land only to find that my ground and the growing season wasn't long enough to farm. Aside from a few inches of top soil, it was all river rock and sand. Lived there for 10 years but finally sold it. It made a nice summer home to the buyers. Had more than enough water, just not enough dirt. You will be very successful in your homestead. Nice dirt and develop those springs and water should be abundant to make your dreams come true! I will be watching you from the northern mountains in Idaho, USA. You all are just awesome! God bless you and your land prosper!
That is pretty cool what some ppl can accomplish if they put their minds to it! Something i'm looking forward to do on my 14.47 acres of land in the middle of Alaskan Wilderness! Accept i'll be doing it all by my self :)

Wonderful video! This is good living... not easy, but almost always worth the effort! I spent my last winter clearing my land located on an island off the coast of Maine (ferry no bridge...). 200 year old house and plenty of projects ahead! Cheers.

Doesn’t exist in my part of the UK either, sadly everyone is caught up in a rat race of who has the best car and who has the best house, consuming all only to realise life was just all too short. The community depicted in this short documentary in Portugal is incredible!!! Watching clips similar to this just ignited that desire to venture into the unknown for an adventure… The only thing stopping me is money
Small steps begin at home eg. container or vertically grown vegetables if you have no other space, find like minded ppl, backyard communities, community gardens, back to basics, caring, sharing, bartering. Dream BIG!! Hold on to your dreams. Be positive. Blessings & good luck to you all 🙏🏼

@@simminglybeautiful8465 Go to Zillow and look up lots/land for under 20k, remove the boundary and zoom out. The whole country is packed with tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of little red dots, each representing acres where you could do the same thing as they're doing in this video.

I LOVE this. There is something about starting basic and leveling up. Almost like in Minecraft or other adventure games ;) I wanted to start my woodshop and a channel at the same time and show the whole learning process and see where it goes. I never did as I wasn't confident in starting both at the same time. I love starting new things to learn cool and new things....but I hate finishing them ;)

I love stuff like this. I'm quite jealous of people with skills like this, and the ability to "live off the land" in some way as you do. If there's ever a zombie apocalypse or near species annihilating catastrophe, you lot would do just fine lol.

Those bushes that are all over the place are Acacia Dealbata, an invasive species from Australia. We have a lot of them in northwestern Spain. Congratulations on your great schievements!!!!

Amazing! Anyway, I think it is a mistake to remove the vegetation covering your water. In Portugal, strong sun will evaporate your water soon. Keep it well shaded, perhaps from trees so you can access the water well :-)
I'm sure the neighbours knows the area and climate better than you. I would be surprised if they did not caution/stop them from making a "mistake" as you call it.

It was mentioned (more than once) that the area has more rain than the Netherlands. That is A LOT of rain. They seem to have done their homework, but it could not all be explained in under 20 minutes.

can't wait for season 2.home steading is always a fascinating process. Its an art form that takes place just by using practicality to survive. its beauty comes from conforming with nature to make your land inhabitable. even more interesting is the old structures and how they can serve a purpose for your new home.
Might be a good idea to build a system to use the water around just in case a small wild fire starts near your camp. Even if the chance is small of happening it might come in handy one day. Waiting for the fire rescue can take long.
