Building a chicken house/coop for our new chicks! We milled some wood with our Woodland mills HM122 and raided our stash of leftover materials to see if we could build a nice new chicken coop. Introducing our chicks to our two dogs. Hopefully they will get along so we can free range them at least part of the time. We are trying out sapphire gem chicks and black australorps. Both are supposed to be good egg layers.
Be sure and check out our log cabin build videos and come visit the cabin. It is listed in Airbnb. www.airbnb.com/h/old-bear-rid...
I watch these videos to see how people have done things. I constantly think, "I wouldn't do it like that" and "why didn't he . . . " But, I learn, so I watch. I enjoyed YOUR video here, primarily watching the two of you work together. You guys are a good team. 😄
Thank you Paul!😊
Just watched all three parts. My wife and I love the coop and run! Nice work guys!
Thank you Terry! 😊👍
Thank you Terry! 😊👍

Thanks Margaret! Glad to share it with you!😊💕
Great to have a new video from you guys to enjoy! Chicken coop coming along very nicely - I think those birds will have some very fine accommodation. Look forward to Part II. (Brodie needs to be trained up on the chainsaw to get that squirrel!) Greetings from Olde London Towne, Olde Englande.
🤣🤣Yes if he had some thumbs he would probably give it a try. He sure doesn’t give up easily 😁Good to hear from you Stevan! Take care😊👍

You doing great great job keep on doing what you doing I'm proud of you guys I wish I was able to do that
Thank you! I t gets a little harder each year😁👍
Lovely to see you two working together on another project. Those chickens will have a great coop and I hope you get a steady supply of eggs too. Very best wishes from an engaged fan.
Thanks Jim! We had chickens years ago when we lived in town. Been missing it. The store eggs just aren’t the same. Thanks for watching. It’s nice to hear from you again!😊👍
Brody was thinking, "Don't talk me out of my lunch there Lance.😊
Exactly! 🤣😂He doesn’t give up easily 😜🐕🐕
That came out really nice 👍
Thanks Armida! 😊🌷
Howdy y’all- good to see you again. Really nice chicken setup. Hope y’all have a great weekend. God bless
Thanks Paul. I hope your project is going good. It’s been nice getting a few days without rain so we can get some work done. I hope all is well with you and your family. Take care. 😊
This build was amazing! My wife and I are very much looking forward to building a coop from scratch in just a few weeks. I would love to model ours much like yours. Have you posted, or could you post, a rough materials list for your build. I am failry handy, but global organization for such a large/complex build is above my paygrade! Thanks for posting this video.
Hi Brandon. Sorry about the late reply! We didn’t keep a materials list since we cut some on our mill as we needed them. We have been crazy busy this week, but I will try to get a rough list together and let you know. Have fun with your build!😊👍👍
Team work makes the dream work! Hubby and I are gonna be building our own this summer!
So true! I hope you have fun building it, we sure did. And there is something very relaxing about watching your chicks😊💕
@@natureartgirl I am taking notes and sharing with husband Only thing different I want to incorporate is a mulch bin on the end the chickens can climb up onto to find bugs
Good idea! We have been throwing weeds and stuff in and they definitely love scratching around in it and eating. Greens and bugs are really good for them!
Perfect, that is exactly my next step. Grow my natural food. Nice job, background perfect.
You will enjoy it! Have fun😊👍
Looking good so far, waiting on part 2. ✌🏼❤️🙏🏼
Thanks Mark! We won’t make you all wait so long in this one! The chicks are really growing fast, they need more room😁
Lance you could use a couple of saw horses there partner. Good to see you folks back building again.
That’s for sure! We had them in the storage building with a big pile of wood on them🤣🤣It was too much trouble to dig them out😁
@@natureartgirl 🤣🤣🤣
Raising day old is the best idea , they kind of grow with you and literally understand anything you say to them .
Yes, they are definitely tamer and friendlier too. We have been enjoying them 😊
Very nice and good work
Thank you sir! We appreciate you watching!😊👍
Well come

Hi Mira. We are having fun on this project. It shouldn’t take long to finish. The chicks are really growing fast and need more room😁💕Hope you have a wonderful weekend 💕😊💕
Welcome back iam wating for your nice videos
Hi Sami! Sorry it’s been so long. We’ve been catching up on a few things and working on planting our garden. We will post another video Friday. Thanks for watching! Take care😊👍
This must be a really nice yard, the birds won't shut up about it. 😂
😂😂👍
New to your channel. The thumbnail looked so inviting. ‘Sorry about the beautiful 😊bark covered shed. Attention to detail! Spray painting the hinges and screws was a stroke of genius, as was having saved that hardware for reuse. 👏 God bless the work of your hands and your appreciation for His creation. 🙋♀️
Thanks so much! We do tend to save stuff, sometimes a little too much!😂But it does come in handy. The old shed has now been torn down and the view is much improved. Thanks for watching and commenting 😊💕
Missed you guy's 👍
Thanks! Good to hear from you! Hope you have a good weekend 😊🐕
Und wieder super Arbeit von euch beiden ihr seit einfach ein super Team 👋👏🏻🤗😊😁😅🤗🇩🇪🙋♂️😰
Thanks Josef. Nice to hear from you! Hope you have a wonderful weekend!😊👍💕
Nice.. very good ideas .. i'll create new chicken coop at my home.. thank you
Great! Glad you like it. It was a pretty easy design to build!😊👍👍
Old couple build log cabin, one year ago. And watched from day one, but Lance and Cinda, it seems more like 10 years ago. Great effort and job well done to both of you. Now starts the chicken jokes 😂 Why did the chicken cross the road.😊
It seems like 10 years to us too! Been trying to get caught up on everything. Plus we have had a crazy amount of rain this year! Hope you are doing well! Thanks for sticking with us all this time🤣😁
In Alabama we use to say the chicken crossed the road to prove to the armadillo it could be done.....
Wow! You guys got all of that done in one day? I don't think I would have the energy!
Yes, it was a long day!😊👍
Hi Lance! Good job as always👍. Soon there will be plenty of eggs for breakfast. Best regards from Hans and Cheers🍻🇦🇹.
Hi Hans! Hope you are doing good 😊Nice to hear from you😊🍺👍😁
@@natureartgirl Unfortunately not Lance, I tore all the tendons in my right upper arm. Has not been operated on for over 60 years. 🍻
@@johannperaus6890 Yikes! That’s not good. You did it 60 years ago?
@@natureartgirl It happened 3 months ago. If you are over 60 years old, it is no longer operated on. I'm almost 64 years old, Lance.
Oh ok I understand. That’s not good. That takes a long time to heal. 😬😬Cinda tore all the tendons in her right foot years ago and it still gives her trouble. I am going to a physical therapist for my shoulder… trying to avoid surgery if I can. Stuff sure gets harder as we get older😬😬Thinking of you sir!! Take it easy if you can👍
Nice video…❤I love watching you guys,I’m your new subscriber ❤…
Thanks so much for subscribing!😊
nice chicken coop
Thanks Steve!😊
What I like best about this is the teamwork of this couple. They show what’s best about marriage.
Thanks Conrad! We do enjoy working together!😊👍
Hi, I aquired a chicken coup three weeks ago with seven chickens. A small start but will see where this leads me. I have just subscribed to your channel. Thanks for your suppirt.
Hi Micky! Thanks so much for subscribing! Seven chickens should give you a nice supply of eggs! We are really looking forward to ours beginning to lay. Should be in a few weeks I hope! It’s hard to beat farm fresh eggs😊👍
Love the look of your build! Do you have the dimensions of this posted anywhere? Looks like the coop is about 4' wide and 8' deep?
The hen house part is 4’ x8’ full sheet of plywood for the bottom. The entire coop is 8’ deep by 18’ long. It would be just as easy to make it 20’ long, but that wouldn’t fit in the space we had available. (we wouldn’t be able to get the boat out of the garage.🤣) we don’t have any plans drawn up at this time. We really need to do that😊
O yeah that awesome
Thank you!!😊
You guys have some interesting projects. This one looks as good as the log cabin but not as much work. Question for Cinda, what is the purpose of the tall round fence that’s full of rock? Thanks
Hi Tom, yes definitely a lot easier 🤣 that was one day, plus some time sawing the wood. I think it will take about a week’s worth of work to finish. The rock is the corner post for our garden fence. You just drive a metal post into the ground, then cut a length of fence and make it into a cylinder around the post. Then you just gradually fill it up with rock. Good way to use up random shaped rocks and pretty easy to do.
1:00 I’ve had chicken for around 3 years now and I’ve learned a lot. Pine shaving for baby chicks is not the best option. They don’t know the difference between crumble and small shaving. They could get compacted. Hopefully not but why take the chance. A better option blue shop towel with a little bit of crumble feed on the floor near the feeder. 👍🏼
Thanks for the info Victor! It’s been many years since we have raised chickens! Having to basically start over and it’s really nice to have access to other’s experience so we can hopefully avoid mistakes. It helps other chicken newbie’s too!😊👍👍
Use hardie backer for your floors it will never rot from moisture or urine. If you can put some over the plywood. You'll be glad you did.
Sounds like a good idea. Have you tried it? Do you have to seal the cracks? We used a sheet of linoleum over the treated plywood and up the sides. Some others recommended that. We will see how it goes. Thanks for the idea!!😊👍
@@natureartgirl l did flooring and coustom shower's all my life. And it's what you put on your walls to glue tile to. As well as flooring. Being a contractor I'm sure you know you end up with lots of leftover's. I had some Hardie backer laid out for I don't know how many years. And it got wet everytime it rained. I picked it up and looked at it. It looked brand new. Still had its strength. Yea you need to seal joints. It would seem to me when you're chicks scratch it would tear vinyl and once you get a hole started? I put it in mine and throw pine shavings on it. And it does what I knew it would do.
@@samsam-nb4yf thanks Sam Sam! That’s good to know. We may have to get some. It’s not very expensive. 😊👍👍
@@samsam-nb4yfvinyl not recommended…linoleum less toxic
Libertad es fenomenal, respirar aire puro, crecer tu propia comida, saludable, sabrosa. Buen trabajo hermanos, gracias por la informacion
You are very welcome! You are right, we love working outside and growing as much of our own food as possible. Thank you for watching!😊
Do you sell plans for this coop? We are planning to build one and this would be a perfect design for what we need.
lol, a desk lamp🤣🤣🤣🤣
And a hammock!😂
Goodchicken
Thanks!😊👍
I love your chicken coop. Do you have plans for it? I would love to build one like it.
We don’t have plans available, but it shouldn’t be too hard to build one just from the video. The measurements would be a little different because we used our own lumber that we milled. So the boards are true 2x4’s. But purchased ones would work fine. We would be happy to answer any questions as you go. 😊👍👍
@@natureartgirl thank you for getting back to me ❤️
That coop looks amazing! Did you get any of the design ideas from Carolina Coops?
Yes! We liked their clean out door and deep litter method. Ours is a little different, no peaked roof for one thing. But they make some awesome coops!
@Lance & Cinda Serafin you guys did a great job!!! 👍
hi, beautiful work! What are the dimension for the lumber?
We used true 2”x4” lumber that we milled ourselves, but purchased 2x4’s would work fine. If you live in a heavy snow load area you might want larger lumber for the rafters. The front boards are 8’ tall and the back are 6’8” tall. If you want a steeper roof you could go shorter on the back. The hutch part has 4x4’s for the corner posts. 😊👍
What are the dimensions of the coop?
8 feet wide by 18 feet long. You could easily make it 20 feet long instead, but it would have been in the way for our garage. 😊
What is the rock tower for? The one with wire all around? Is it to allow flower vines to grow?
Some of them are our corner posts for the garden fence. The ones in the garden are for our muscadine vines. They are so heavy that they pull normal posts over when they are loaded with fruit.
Do you sell plans for this coop? We are planning to build one and this is a perfect design for what we need.
Hi! We don’t have plans for it right now, but it isn’t too hard to figure out from just watching the videos. Most of the measurements aren’t too critical. Just basically a big box with a roof. If we get plans drawn up, we will be sure to let you know 😊
sell the build plans, looks nice
Thanks Jon! We may do that when we get some time. Been super busy!😊👍
LOL look what happens when you plug it in 😂😂😂
Right!🤣😂The brain glitches are becoming more frequent lately 😁🤣
Yeah I know the feeling 😁
ساختنذهمچین جایی برای حیوون هامون خییلی لذت بخشه☺️
Yes it is!😊Thanks for watching!👍
That is the overall size of this coop
Hi! It is 8’ wide by 18’ long. It would actually be easier to make it 20’ long but that would not work in the space we had. 😊👍
where did u get that lamp with the clamp. I need those for my chicks
At woods or any farm supply will have them and the bulbs. They are not expensive 😊👍
What are you treating the wood with? I see a bucket with paint
It is a wood preservative and stain. Outlast Q8 log oil. You can get it online at westernloghomesupply.com. It is really good stuff and easy to use.
Where did you order your girls from, if you don't mind my asking?
Hoovers hatchery online. Not too many places have the sapphire gems. The black australorps are pretty common though. We have been really happy with both kinds 😊
Can I get a blue prints for this coop if u have the measurements and materials used thanks
We haven’t drawn out any detailed plans. We’ve been crazy busy lately. But it’s not too hard to figure out. Your dimensions would be somewhat different than ours since we used our own rough cut wood. It’s actual 2”x4” boards. If we get some time we will try to draw up some. We’ve had a lot of requests for them. 😊

Yes, we both love animals! We like to give them the best life we can. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! Hope you have a good week!😊👍
Do you have plans available for this coop?
Not right now. We haven’t had time to draw them up. But if you are fairly handy, it is not hard to figure out by the videos. We tried to make it pretty detailed. We will try to get some plans drawn up whenever we get some time😊
It has been a while.. Hope everything is fine with you there..
Yes, doing ok. We’ve just had a lot of neglected work to catch up on since we finished the cabin. And we’ve had a record year for rain! Thanks for watching. Hope you have a great weekend 😊👍
Y'all in Royal, AR?
Yes we are😊
Don't forget the fencing under ground so the fox does not get in
Yes, for sure! We learned that from another you tube video. Very good suggestion!😊👍👍
Remember chicken math is real. I figured 6 chicken would be a good number for my wife and I. We must’ve used chicken math. Because Apparently 1+5 = 28 🤷🏽
So true! We only really wanted 8 or 10, but the minimum order for specialty chicks we wanted was 15!😂😂So far though, it has been worth it. We are currently getting 10 or 11 eggs a day from our 14 hens. Super happy with that since they are still very young and we are in the low light season of the year. They are also very sweet natured birds😊
@@natureartgirl yeah you are worth it. I have more eggs than I can use for sure. I even have my dog eating boiled eggs. My cat wants no part of it. Oh well I tried. Tip: mix grind up egg shells with fermented chicken feed. It’s a way to give the chicken back calcium. They love it.
The first thing you should’ve done was build a couple of sawhorses! Then you wouldn’t have to stand on your head to cut the lumber.
So true! Our sawhorses were busy holding up up pile of lumber that we milled. But it definitely would have made the job easier if we had taken the time to build a couple more😂👍👍
You guys need some saw horses. My back is killing just watching you. We have a sawmill as well. But it is a misnomer when you say the lumber is free. You had to take the trees down, then mill it, and then build . None of which is free. There is cost attached to each thing.
So true! We did get some of these trees from a local tree service, so it was less work than normal. But it still is a lot of work milling the lumber. We have more time than money though, so it is cost effective for us. We also like being able to make whatever size we need😊
That’s not a chicken coop. It’s a chicken fort!
😂😂Turns out it was a good thing we built a fort…we just had a tremendous hail storm. We will post video next Friday 😬
Poor chick
Yeah, so sad when you lose one🥲
Chicks by mail. Horrifying.
It’s the only way to get certain types. There are no hatcheries near here. Other than buying from individuals. Even if you hatch them yourself, there can be losses due to them crowding together or other factors. Just facts of life.
Just to bad send those little baby in the mail I don’t agree whit that 😅🥺🥺🥺
Yes, it is sad to lose one for sure! But this kind of chicks are not available anywhere around here. We wanted to try them because they are supposed to be good layers and friendly. We had chickens years ago and the white leghorns we had were really stupid and did not get along very well. They picked on each other all the time. These girls are super sweet natured and will even let us pick them up and pet them. Great layers too!
Too slow
