Minecraft 1.20.5 is here with Armadillos, Wolf Variants, Wolf Armor, news for the Spawn Chunks and more! This is a full showcase of the changes! #minecraftemployee
This guide was made for Minecraft Java Edition. Many new features and some smaller changes also apply to Bedrock Edition.
slicedlime works as a Tech Lead for Minecraft at Mojang, but the KZhead and Twitch channels are personal projects run entirely in his spare time. This is an unofficial update video that aims to be the most comprehensive guide possible. Official announcement: www.minecraft.net/en-us/artic...

Sorry for the more unsteady voice recording quality on this one - I had to deconstruct my studio recently to get some emergency construction work done.
Don't worry, I'm sure it will be fine! You always give us quality content and it's always useful and nice, I'm sure no one will say anything if the recording quality is a bit down 😁😁❤️
Its quite fine, it was emergency after all
Enrapturing as always! You and ianxofour provide 100% of my minecraft expertise 💚
This voice actually feels calmer
It's fine I didn't notice it
love the fact you kept the chest in the top left corner to show how slow it was, cracked me up
That's a massive improvement!
When?
Since we've been told that the experimental stuff is feature-complete, seeing actual snapshots for 1.21 is going to be weird. It feels like we could jump straight from 1.20.5 to prereleases for 1.21.
exactly, i’m so confused why this stuff isn’t just a part of 1.21
They are still going to add new background music and big maybe but a new music disk
There's still tons of tweaking and bug fixing to be done for the existing 1.21 features as well! Although all the features in the game, they're not quite finalised yet.
@Sachrin they already showed a music disc on twitter
@@CatWithALime woah that’s literally awesome, literally going to check now #literally
I never knew that's why opening the shipwreck chests took so long! Despite the loud annoying people, speaking for those who know how much work it takes to develop, you guys are doing some fantastic work! Thank you for your work and fantastic videos to explain clearly the updates!
This video rocks! Seeing its length, I can only imagine how long the technical news video will be.
well...
Really love this minor update
Very "minor" indeed.
I love the new menu blur
@@zax71Well, it’s called a minor update since that’s how updates “1.X.X” are called (except for updates prior 1.8)
If i'm not mistaken, this is the first minor update *ever* to receive it's own title!
@@justaguy2183I was more mentioning the component changes that are probably up there with the biggest technical changes ever for modders
9:55 wasn't expecting to see the language update!! Best channel
toki, fellow conlang enjoyer
Very nice that end portals now load chunks on the recieving end. :) Would be cool if end gateways would do the same though.
Finally, a new mob that can be put into a farm crammer
I think the end portal texture behind the end poem ROCKS!
kind of funny that this is a MINOR update tbh. even more so with the technical news video (i only understand 20% of it and OH MY GOD)
Whoever you were playing w/ did you DIRTY with the obsidian trap, lmao
There have been full major releases (looking at you 1.10) that were smaller than this minor release!
awesome video, always so much misinformation around game updates so thank you! Also I know this isent the place, but i noticed on wolf armor that it shows a Hex/Numerical number for the dyes and I always wondered if a theoretical dyeing station could be made where you can customize the hex value itself and the "dyeing station" makes you put in the required dyes to craft it. Also congrats on 100k!
Congratulations on reaching 100K subscribers!
Slice I'm curious about two things, are you still developing the bundle and finding an easy way to use it for both (Java and Bedrock). And the horns? there will be a big change towards new ideas instead of means Of communication
The spawn chunk changes are much needed, now we can finally make decent passive mob farms without having to replace all grass in a 10 chunk radius
So happy to see Viossa in Minecraft
I love how at 9:35, it changed from Java 16+1 to Java 16+1+4 to show the change from Java 17 to Java 21.
wow so much specific yet effective ❤ ty man i love you videos
How unusual it is to watch this video, knowing that a couple of hours ago candidate one 1.20.6 came out
I hope the new Drops versions keep up. There can be more changes now without worrying if it fits in a theme or if can have enough features to be a major update
Great video as always. I personally feel like these update overview videos shouldn't have such a big focus on experimental features. It makes sense for the snapshot/prerelease videos, but most people looking for a 1.20.5 overview are looking for what's in that update and not 1.21, which could add to the confusion people have about the whole split development thing.
Thank you @slicedlime! Your update videos are the best ever!
I am curious what the design decision behind changing the bad omen system was. To me it sort of breaks what I envisioned the idea as, which is that killing a raid captain made the pillagers upset and they attacked "your" village in retaliation. This seems much more disconnected from that idea, especially with the random bottles.
it nerfs raid farms and opens the door to other "ominous" things. but i agree that it needs to feel more integrated with the game.
They should throw the ominous potions or shoot ominous arrows
I find that there are still very interesting lore implications the ominous bottle has. It's basically what raid captains would normally use if they found a village while patrolling, to get help raiding the village.
@@lubicrafter3143 You're right that it has its own lore implications, but I still prefer the previous implications tbh.
This video is so helpful! A super detailed report of every single little changes it amazing!
A new game for watching your videos ... find Octojen! Thanks for all the useful information
I'm a bit confused why the "+11 armor" bug on wolf armor wasn't prioritized and fixed before 1.20.5 was fully released. Wolf armor has infinite protection, the +11 statistic is dated and misleading.
No, it means that it heats up 11 hits and the dog armor is different from the player's, player armor (protects), dog armor (preserves)
@@dimdamveler7886 This is not the case at all. The +11 stat is from when wolf armor used to behave like horse armor. Wolf armor takes a varying amount of hits to break depending on the incoming attack damage, it is not 11 hits. This bug was already confirmed, it's MC-268913.
eh, at least it's not that big of a deal though right? It's just a small thing, after all...I think. If I'm wrong please correct me.
@@Abadraco It's not a huge deal or anything, but it does tell players that are trying wolf armor for the first time the wrong information.
@@SeaOfPixels I remember them mentioning that the armor doesn't tank the damage for magic attacks, heat, and cold but it the armor still reduces damage in the developer interview, so that's probably what the +11 does.
Minecraft Achievement Speedruns are gonna get a whole lot more interesting!
I understand that 1.20.5 and experimental feature toggle make sense from a developer perspective but it's very confusing for casual player who would expect everything to just be called 1.21
it will just be called 1.21 when the full update releases
YAY! For one, thanks for this video, but two, CONGRATS ON 100K!
Really loving this detailed overview of 1.20.5, as always, and if there's anything this video has left me with, it's a newfound excitement for the 1.21 update!!! Originally I didn't think much of it, but with everything I've seen here, I can't wait to dive back into the game when it's out as well! 😁😁
Interested to see how this affects server and mod updating
spiders should have a chance to spawn with weaver like they can with other potion buffs(I think they chance should be higher than other effects as well)
Or just produce webs
@@timohara7717 Nah, webs stay forever. I don't want spiders I never saw leaving cobweb trails all around my world.
I wonder how people are gonna do How Did We Get Here? in 1.21. Seems like the addition of Raid Omen and Trial Omen would make it much harder.
They always manage to find a way
@@MalHerweynen they always come back
I'd never heard of Viossa, decided to look it up, and dang is that a cool language! If anyone is interested in languages and hasn't heard of it, I highly recommend jan Misali's Conlang Critic episode on it. (The video is very different from and in my opinion better than the usual Conlang Critic format.)
thank you for giving us a command to change the spawn radius. Can we eventually have it configurable in options menu.
Congrats on 100k subs!
18:15 Can we ooze silverfish and infest slimes?
I don't see why you wouldn't be able to, good catch!
they aren't the produced mobs so yea
@@timohara7717 Two command blocks, one that autooozes all silverfish another that infests all slimes.
@@youtubeuniversity3638 ?
They should make the spawn chunk size not a gamerule but a setting in the ingame menu, since people with old hardcore worlds wont be able to use gamerules and many old farms relying on spawn chunks will be broken because they will be unloaded now
I've noticed that my tree farm in 1.20.5 is now broken, it looks like TNT has a slightly wider radius to deal damage. Have you noticed this? The tree farm I'm using is ianxofour's versatile tree farm.
Thank you so much for explaining the update. So much to explore and enjoy. Mojang is doing an awesome job enriching our Minecraft worlds.
How is that the achievement for breeding animals is called "The Parrots and the Bats" when Bats can't breed? The says is "The birds and the bees" so why isn't it at least "The Parrots and the Bees"?
Totally guessing but maybe bees hadn't been in the game yet when the advancement was first added?
I see I'm not the one who has been severely bugged (pun proudly unintended) by the name of this advancement for many years.
@villian1208 they weren't but that achievement should've been updated when bees got added
I'm pretty sure that parrots can't breed either! You can only tame them, but breeding is not possible.
Almost certain it's a joke since neither of those mobs can breed.
This video is almost as long as the 1.20 video! This "minor" update is insane! It makes me wonder what will be there in 1.21
Well, half of this video was what will be in 1.21.
Thank you!
Thank you guys for releasing 1.20.5 today, I can now continue my map
Oh vaults blocks only work once. That's sad. The whole appeal of these chambers is their that they refresh the challenge, but that challenge without reward just means they're taking up space after if you aren't on multiplayer. Especially given how the spawners are near impossible to break. I thought this update was meant to fix that issues with structures, not make it worse.
It didn't make it worse and still made it better? Just because the vault sucks doesn't mean it isn't progress
The weird thing was that they seemed to be advertised as re-activating after a certain amount of time, but I guess that was just the spawners. If they think about it, they'll do the same thing for Elytra in End Cities somewhere down the line.
@@timohara7717 Huge useless after used once structures full of near impossible to mine blocks. Sounds worse to me!!
Stop being a dick to the guy. Just because he works for Mojang doesn't mean that he's the lead developer of the game
(I deleted my previous comment because I realized I misread your comment, oops. My argument was that the trial chambers are better now than they were in 1.20.3. If you disagree with that let me know and I'll write it again. I also wish the vault had some way to get loot again, even if it's just from a nerfed pool or something so that diamonds and maces don't become renewable. I'd still disagree that this update made the issue worse, though. You can get _a bit_ of loot multiple times, like the potion rewards from trial spawners, and the structure itself can be played twice- once normally and once in ominous mode. That's more replayable than every other dungeon in the game. And the trial spawners already take forever to break, so the vault didn't introduce that.)
It would be really cool if there were more of these drops, along with the major updates. Small additions that enhance one biome or mob.
true
are all the data pack version changes in this release already included, or will they be added in 1.21? I would love to see a summary of all the changes, I kind of lost track which things have been changed and where things are different to 1.20.4 throughout the snapshots, even though your videos helped a lot exploring the new features
wolves went from just being there to being outlandishly overpowered lmao
i dont know how this guy manages to make a vid daily with same quality
really cool!!!
You said at 6:22 that hoppers no longer search block above them if it is a full block. What about soulsand and mud which technically were full blocks, but players and items would sink in to them. Allowing previously the hopper to pick up items through these blocks.
Those are not full blocks, and are not affected.
How are they technicly full blocks?
The Update is now out? Oh baby! :D
Do know that this is not 1.21 update
@@shravan012 yes but still, i love the datapack changes :D
a new "better than the wolves" update coming...
i wonder if poison tipped arrow farms will ever become a thing?
I'm wondering how you can use ReplayMod in snapshot/new version? However, amazing video as always, your videos are incredibly useful
I can't - these videos are made with a custom mod that enables camera movements which I maintain myself for snapshots.
@@slicedlime amazing! Is there a way to download it?
@@atomic_dreamz Currently no - I do not have time to develop it into something supported, so it'll remain private for the time being.
I really don't understand why wolf armor is on 1.20.5 People voted for them to apear o the next update. So in a way to say, Minecraft 1.20 had the sniffer and the armadillo. Both being mob votes. . My only theory about that desition is that on 1.21 there will be the crab and the penguin. I see no other reason.
Finally!
I hope they add more birds and butterflies for the next update
Only thing to indicate they would ever do thst is the new paintings which even then were released alongside a 1.20.5 version
10:28 Thank you, thank you, thank you and thank you very much.
So many small changes that show how much you all really care about Minecraft. It's unfair that people call the devs lazy, while they do so many changes that show their true perfectionism. I like the update!
The full block over hopper thing is a bit concerning. Soul sand and Mud are full blocks but should let hoppers be active.
Soul sand and mud are not full blocks.
@@slicedlime Cool. At one point soul sand flipped between being full and not a few times. Well this should definitely be an improvement. Thanks for the feedback! :D
@@AissurDrol Only source i can find for that is on bedrock One time... which i feel isn't even true as i could've sworn i've sunken in it since forever... Yea idk why everyone keeps saying they are full blocks when that seems to only apply to mud for two 1.19 versions

those vaults will be used as lootboxes on servers. Mark my words

5:39 How did you make that clip transparent?
Slicedlime, will you redo, update or continue the Minecraft commands tutorials ?
Wanted to play today. However on iPad Pro 6th gen. After opting in for realms stories. Game crashes to dashboard after clicking play.
Dev Question: How do you do the in-game text, or the in game GUI or the special visualizations like coloring the active/inactive chunks? Did you code that specially for these videos?
In game text isn’t really in game, it’s most often edited in in post. The active/inactive chunks is two captures of the same camera movement on top of each other in a world where we cleared out chunks using commands.
@@slicedlime That's really neat! What about the in-game menu gui (in third person)?
@@ciberman It's kind of the same - a transparent image of the menu, tracked into the scene in post.
@@slicedlime really cool!
Does removing spawn chunks also means removing the spawn protection on multiplayer servers? I need dont know if theres an easy way to remove the spawn protection but this would help me a lot since it limits what other players can do at spawn.
Spawn protection is a completely separate thing. It’s controlled by a setting in the server properties.
@@slicedlime thanks for the info

Armadillos makes Spiders run Cats makes Creepers run Wolves make Skeletons run When are we getting a zombie repellent mob?
Might be too op
Particularly need zombie repellant for the mini zombies.
We don't have a repellent mob, but villagers can be used to lure them.

Sign this petition if you want them to remove max render distance based on how good your CPU is. (comment to sign) If they want Minecraft to be more polished, they can show a warning saying that it will lag out your PC. This is one of the reasons why I played Java Edition. Because you can make your render distance up to 32 chunks, no matter your PC.
Are you ok? Do you need bundles?
@@timohara7717 What do you mean "I need bundles"? I'f just complaining about a stupid feature! Do you want to sign or not?
I've been trying for so damn long to get a mending villager on my map with experimental features enabled. What I know is only swamp villagers can get mending, which I have a swamp villager, but It NEVER seems to get mending no mater how long I try. Can mending not be with novice level swamp villagers or something?

Did bro forgor about minecraft live
It's an "experimental feature". It's not really considered to be part of the release (the same way the bundle isn't released yet and has its own experimental feature).

Are the size and step height attributes part of 1.20.5 or 1.21?
1.20.5. They'll be in the tech video.
@@slicedlime My bad, I keep forgetting you separate the gameplay and the tech into different videos lol. Very excited for those, absolute gamechangers
W update
4:18 Both wolves took the exact same amount of damage there. Not sure what that was supposed to highlight?
Wolves previously took half damage by those damage types, meaning the wolf with 40 health would be at about 20 instead of about 30.
@@bl4ckscor3 Exactly. Wolves supposedly took half damage by these damage types previously, yet they actually take the exact same amount of damage in 1.20.4 and 1.205, at least as shown in the video.
@@4203105 Half of their health
I think this particular scene shows one of the damage types where wolves did NOT take half damage, which is why this change of doubling their health and removing the weird halving is advantageous - they no longer die as easily of explosions.
@@4203105 wolves used to have 20hp and take half damage from those sources. Now they have 40hp and take full damage from them. Since their health got doubled at the same time the resistance was taken away, those damage sources still do the *same percentage of health* in damage to wolves as they used to, but they now do *twice the actual amount of damage* that they used to.
No new superflat content :(
Isn't all this supposed to be for 1.21 ?
The stuff in the Experimental 1.21 pack is indeed for 1.21, but he's covering it here because it can be accessed if you enable said data pack.
Minor Update
Wait it takes 6 scoot to make, but it takes upto 8 to repair it to full, why not just replace it?
Can't really do that mid-combat.
if you don't want to risk the armor breaking at the worst time, you'll try to always leave it fully restored. of course, when back at your base you could snip it off and replace for a new one, but if you're out adventuring and have a few wolves clicking to fix might be more practical.
@@slicedlime the crafting table in question:🗿 But no seriously right clicking shears once and putting new armor back on is way faster than right clicking 8 times... If we are considering the combat usefulness of this feature, we should also consider how long it takes to have to fully repair the armor, which is not short.
@@myrtles1493 Yeah I mean good luck. I know I'd completely fail to do that and probably leave the dog unprotected while it's being hammered by a warden or something. Way safer to just spam click with scutes. If you have way more precision than I do, yes clipping and replacing is more efficient. Or just waiting until it breaks and replacing I suppose.
@@slicedlime is there a similar reason for why unenchanted tools and armor often require more materials to repair than the tool itself? i can only imaging it's for consistency with enchanted items
For once I get here early! Very excited to hear from slicedlime!
