I mean really key in pocket is uncomfortable? I have like 2-3 sets of keys in my pockets all the time, get more comfortable pants then.

    • And that's the reason why car manufacturers put these things in their cars. We know it's ridiculous, but a lot of people kinda like that stuff. I don't blame anyone. I still chuckle when I see expensive cars with fake exhausts tho. Especially during the winter when you can clearly see no steam coming from the fake exhausts. • My wife's Evoque is like this. To turn on the seat heater, you press the climate control knob, but this doesn't turn it on, it just brings up the complicated graphical menu for the seat heaters, where you then select the bottom or back of the seat, and click the "up" arrow to turn it on. Only, you can't do this when you first start the car as the whole thing is booting up, and you can't do it until you've reversed off the drive either, as the controls don't work when the reversing camera is using the screen... It's bizarre - as you say you (quite rightly) should not be dialing numbers on your phone while driving, but have a full Windows desktop for turning on the heating.

  • every point you made is on my list too. I will not buy a car where I have to go into the entertainment system to increase the fan speed. When I started driving cars, (a very long time ago) there was an ignition key and a pull lever (I think lever is the best name) to start the engine. We also had to get out of the car and turn the rear lights on! It was a long time ago. So some changes were an advantage. Heaters and fans were an optional extra.

  • You forgot the worst trend of all: huge wheels with ridiculously low-cut tires and almost no rubber, mounted for no reason on family and saloon cars as well as small SUVs, resulting in less comfort in daily use (and the tires are more expensive to replace). Even worse: as you move up to premium trims of the same car, you get bigger wheels and less rubber, so premium models are less comfortable than the entry-level ones. It started as a sales argument, trying to lure buyers to spend more on their new car: If you'll shell out a couple of grand more, we'll give you this and that, and ah... you'll get BIGGER WHEELS (which you really don’t need) - Bigger is better right? wrong in this case. Yes, they do look epic as someone here put it, but they are a pain in the ass... literally!

Car dealers prefer to sell car on leasing or credit than in cash, as they are getting "thank you gift" from banks! - The "Packs" that are locking you to pay 9 things even thought you really wanted just that one option.Or that you can't get best engine on cheapest trim level?! Why? Cause! But you can have your UltraSportLine on cheapest engine. - The ads that shows top trim, but price listed that is for their cheapest model. That should be illegal. - Just too much bling-bling. Disgusting.

They weren't even options with the base manual. It's litterally a 2014 with no cruise control, and I have to stick a key in the door to unlock it. Cruise control was an easy fix, the plugin for it is stuffed behind a blank housing. Just had to buy a new housing with a switch on it. Kinda makes me wonder why they didn't just put it in there anyway.... oh yeah, money! Sorry this came out much longer than i thought.

    • Cost of production absolutely is getting higher and higher. Vehicle manufacturers are lucky to average 5% profit margins on cars. Manufacturing itself is very streamlined these days, but so much is spent on R&D because of overly stringent emissions and safety regulations. How does every new Suzuki Swift need a mild hybrid system? Every car sold in the EU must include collision mitigation technology, which sounds great, but it adds weight and cost, even on a small city car. Cost of raw materials have been steadily increasing over the last 3 decades as well.

I think the reason corporations are able to get away with such high new vehicle prices despite wages being relatively stagnant is because of the amount of people that like to take on debt & do loans, leasing, & credit. The governments likes to do the same thing, spending in excess, while printing money indefinitely & giving bailouts to mismanaged corporations. It's the reason the global financial system is collapsing & fraudulent. Every "option" is FAR less expensive to build than the price they charge for it. Every new electronic way to operate something that used to be mechanical (handbrake, start button, any knob or button on the dash) is a cheap substitute which is cheaper to build than the original mechanical kind and which is marketed as a "clever", "modern" and "comfortable" alternative. Keep: Keyless entry - so much easier than fumbling into your pocket or handbag for keys, then selecting the correct key and having to line it up with the door lock or having to locate the correct button when you have your hands full; Keep: Tailgates and boot/trunk-lids that open/close automatically; Keep: Starter buttons (keep your key in your pocket or hanging from a belt loop); Keep: Head-up displays; Keep: Electronically adjustable and folding exterior mirrors; Keep: Hi level /Third brake lights; Keep: Sat-nav screens for sat-nav, map and navigational instructions, twin the latter with head-up display (and sat-nav screen for maybe a few other functions such as ICE display, not control). Lose: Controls placed out of sight at knee height in front of the steering wheel but below it); Lose: Headlights too bright or set too high; Lose: Running lights that come on at the front only; All running lights should come on when the car's engine/motor is turned on; Lose: LED lights anywhere, too bright at the front, too bright at the rear (too bright for the driver behind when you're sitting in the car behind and this mahoosive indicator is blinking away in front of you or the guy in front keeps his foot on the brake pedal - it's simply blinding; Lose: Fake vents that are so obviously fake; Lose: Fake exhausts although a nice trim finishing off a real exhaust does look nice; Lose: Electronic handbrakes (if you just touch the accelerator by accident they release and that's dangerous - and how do you slow stop the car if the main brakes fail?); Lose: Auto dimming mirrors (they don't dim enough) - unless you can make them dim better; Lose: Any shiny or reflective interior trim; Lose: Lane-keep-Assist that struggles to keep equidistant between the lines (ugh, it makes me motion-sick), or tries to keep you too close to one side of the lane; Lose: Those distinctly odd headlamps that come on when you go round a corner without actually shining around the corner (See below under bring back). Bring back: Real, or even quality-fake wood trim; Bring back: Mechanical handbrake; Bring back: Knobs/buttons/lever controls for HVAC systems; Bring back: Knobs on my ICE; Bring back: Mechanical mirror dimming controls; Bring back: Citroen DS's proper directional headlights; Bring back: Left foot rest; Bring Back: Headlamp dimmer switch on the floor or left foot rest; Invent: Rear fog lamps that only come on when there's actually fog; Invent: Rear screen wiper/washer for all rear screens. The problem is them using completely arbitrary numbers that can't be compared to anything else for a frame of reference, when they would have gone with something more useful and logical like, say, a rough power output figure.

  • Agree with virtually all comments, except your point REF Engine start/stop button. If you have got keyless entry, then a start/stop button is a very useful addition. What's the point of getting into your car without needing a key, only to then have to fish it out of your pocket/bag to start the car. If you prepare and have your keys in your hand, then there's a risk of scratching the paintwork. With my Skoda (thanks for the review by the way) I never take my keys out from my pocket. In fact I find it a pain to fish them out to get in the house and now wish my front door also had keyless entry.

    • Thank you for making the list! Helps also to comment the points a bit better :) 1 - Agree! For me it's already at the point where I would refuse to buy a car with such fake exhausts. Already have to accept they cheat on the emission regulations! 2 - I wonder why there wasn't mentioned more buttons that have to be buttons, e.g. volume, seat heater, PDC... There's plenty of other stuff that currently is a physical button/control that doesn't need to be (e.g. light - that's a button that gets touched ONCE in all of the car's life, to set it to auto, done). Touch screens also have the disadvantage that they have to be relatively close to you, so you can touch them even if you have shorter arms. So they have to be placed further out of view than just a screen, not good. 3 - That is a ridiculuous penis extension on the inside, and should be plainly illegal on the outside. Installing stuff who's only purpose is to annoy people you drive by...idiots. 4 - It looks shit yes. BMW's now look all pig-faced. 5 - Actually think what e.g. BMW does here is correct. The 318, 320, 330 all have the same 2.0L engine with different turbos etc. They keep their old system to be in line with what people expect in terms of power. Audi on the hand are just idiots, they put just bigger fantasy numbers there to trick people. 6 - agree 7 - agree 8 - Hell no, that can look great. Has to be within limits (e.g. not glaringly bright) but can be a nice style component. 9 - Putting 10 gears on a car that is intended to be shifted manually (e.g. flappy paddles) is mighty stupid. On all the others that's totally fine - whatever the calculation result between weight, cost, reliability, efficieny, fun turns out to be should be installed 10 - Don't like it? Don't buy it. It's just a question of style. 11 - Clearly the fault of the people buying it, not of the carmaker. Putting 3k€ for M-package on an 116i instead of upgrading the engine clearly is stupid, but if people want to...? 12 - Nah, I like it. It's not suitable if you have children in your car often or transport stuff etc., but then simply don't select it. 13 - Eco mode in an M or AMG is a bit pointless yes, but it's software that's basically free, so I get why they put it anyway 14 - No! The starter button is great! There are some cars where you have to put the key in a slot, then push a button - that is clearly stupid. Otherwise not having to take out key from pocket, bag etc. is the whole point of the keyless entry & start. Keep that!
