Flatirons Tuning Tech Tip - Subaru WRX 5 Speed Gear Set Comparisons
If you have a Subaru WRX with a 5-Speed transmission, and you start making power, you will likely start thinking about your transmission. The two most common gear sets that come up if you are looking to change/up-grade your gear ratios, etc. are the Legacy GT Gears (similar to the STI V.6 gears) and the STI RA Gears.
We put together kits to help make it as easy as possible to swap these gears into your WRX, but we thought a video might help explain what exactly the differences in these gear sets are.
A few years ago, we also wrote up a comparison of these gear sets, that has a more specific comparison of the different ratios, etc. Here is a link to that:

  • Firstly your videos are some of the best on KZhead and I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge with all scoobaru crew around the globe. I been looking around to see what options are available for sequential gear selection. I see there are some kits available for 6 speed boxes that use the standard factory gearbox case and the gear stick is a direct fit to the box, no linkage rods etc pushing the H pattern around. Can you make a video and share some knowledge on the different types available and the pros and cons plz ? Thank you. Keep up the great work.

    • Thanks Keny! We have been looking into sequentials for a little while, but I wouldn't say it is something we know enough to make a video on yet. As a start, they are only available for the 6MT transmissions, and what you want is one that has a new center section with a cam to shift the gears. I'd recommend looking at the Modena and PPG sequential gear sets. Kaps is another one, but I'd favor Modena and PPG over that one from what we have seen. One other thing to keep in mind is that those are all for motorsport use. These really aren't something that you would want to daily drive, and they all have service intervals where you need to tear the transmission down and inspect everything for wear. I hope that helps, and thanks again for watching!

  • Have you done/can you make a video on which 5 speeds came with dual cone synchros? Did the dual cone synchros appear across the whole model line at the same time? Or just in some models? Which cars came with dual cones on 1st and 2nd? Which came on 1st to 3rd? What about reverse synchro? If you had a gearbox without a reverse synchro, is it as simple as installing the synchro parts onto the end of the input shaft?

  • Very informative video! I've got a little question though; I have a model year 2004 Blob Eye WRX with factory 5 speed and want to convert the gears to something more usable for circuit and track driving, but I also use the car quite often for commuting, so I was wondering if, for example I were to buy the RA set, would I be able to swap all the gears but 5th, as to keep the car economical, or would that mess with the shifting, and or not work?

    @bt-xl8lt@bt-xl8lt3 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks for your question. We don't recommend using the RA gears with the stock 5th gear. This creates a big rpm difference from 4th to 5th which is not ideal, least of which for track driving. Think of this like shifting from 3rd to 5th all the time. Keep in mind that with the RA gears, 5th is the only overdriven gear, so you will actually end up using it on track where you don't typically end up there with the other gear sets. That means that if you take that gear away, and replace it with something much taller, it is very easy to end up in a situation where you don't have a good gear on any long straight. I you are concerned about the shorter RA gears on the street, I'd recommend the V6 gears. Compared to your 04 gears, they have better ratios 1-2-3, are more durable, and are still good on track. And there is no difference once you get into 5th on the highway. Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!

The reason being I have the EZ30/2003 WRX tran combo in an old Porsche 914. I installed the lock out spool and made it 2 wheel drive. These cars are very light and the R/A close ratio 1st-4th is appealing. Especially the more usable 1st. I don't track my car but I do put some hi way miles on it attending different events in other states so I'd like to keep the 3:9 final drive. What is your opinion in doing this on a "horse of a different color"? TIA

When you factor that in, it pushes the benefits of the 6-speed way beyond trying to build up the 5MT. Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!

    • Thanks for your question. I have heard that the first generation 5-speed gear boxes had a slightly more durable gear set than the second generation ones (which started in 1999). But I don't have any first hand confirmation of that. The 4.44 final drive will help you there slightly in terms of holding that power, but I'd guess that once you get to that power target, you may find that it becomes something of a limitation, especially in 5th gear. From our experience, the most reliable way to hold 350 whp or more is with a 6-speed transmission, and trying to sure up weak spots in the 5-speed transmission can eat up a budget very quickly. And there is no form of bracing that I would say is thoroughly proven. So my recommendation would be to look at doing a 6-speed swap. Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!

    • It's me again :) According to subdiesel.wordpress.com/boxer-diesel/transmission/5mt/ , the diesel 5MT boxes have a 5th gear of G/R 0.634 - do you think that would fit into a WRX 5MT? - if yes, then that would be cheaper than changing two pairs for front and rear pinion and ring gear.

      @mihaelmilea@mihaelmilea6 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks for your question. My guess is that will not work in a standard 5MT box, but the only way to know for sure would be to try. The main issue I can see is that the Diesel engines are much torquier, and make power in a completely different range. As such, the stresses on the gear-box are very different, and my guess is that the design totally different to accommodate that. As a start, you can get both 5th gears and start taking measurements to see how close they are, and from there, put one in a transmission to see how it works. Thanks for watching!

    • Thanks for your answer! I think I will try to purchase a 5th gear pair and see if it fits. Seeing Subaru's history, they didn't change much from year to year and parts can be interchanged... I would be surprised if Subaru made different shafts only for 3 years of 5MT diesel (2007 - 2010). When I can get and fit one I will post the results.

    • Thanks for your question. There is not a good solution. If you are concerned about this, then you would want to look at the V6 STI/LGT gears that keep the same ratios for 4th and 5th gear. Because 5th gear is by itself, you can run the RA ratios with the stock WRX 5th gear, but I would strongly recommend against that. Because 5th is the only overdriven gear in the RA set, putting that tall of a 5th gear in makes the shift from the RA 4th to WRX 5th roughly equivalent to going from 3rd into 5th in your WRX. Not to mention that if you do ever track the car, you will be missing a critical gear as you will have to get into 5th because 4th is too short (unless the track is short) and 5th will be way too high. Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!

In the USDM STI 6-speeds, 6MT 5th is the same ratio as 5MT 4th, and 6MT 6th is the same ratio as 5MT 5th. So in terms of high speed, the gear ratios aren't any different. • The biggest issue is bearing support for the main shaft. Honestly, there is a possibility of putting 5-speed ratios in the STI 6-speed. That would be a better option, and more cost effective than the billet 5-speed case I'd guess. • @@FlatironsTuning thanks for the reply, I'm asking because my forester xt 2.0 turbo 5-speed is running almost double the OEM power and I know for sure the gearbox will fail at some point, I am trying to figure out if is there an alternative (besides sti 6 speed) that can handle little bit better the additional power, also I would like to see if switching to a WRX gearbox will keep my rpm lower in 6 gear as it's quite higher right now specially in the motorway ( I've already improved that a bit with taller side wall tires and 18" wheels but the revs still bit high when cruising). Years ago I had one GC8 and a WRX later and I remember the gears where longer, specially the 98 GC8 as it came with a td05 the 5th was endless!! Is the rear diff that makes the gears shorter on the forester? could I just change to a WRX one? I guess they are bolt on, forester is 4.44 vs 4.41 wrx, is that correct? To tell the truth I am doubting because yes it's little annoying to be over rev on the highway but I do love the torque it has now!! It was just to be considered in case the WRX +05 was stronger but if they are about the same it might not worth to do the swap.
