I show the parts inside a Subaru 5 speed manual transmission and what they do, I also explain a little about my project to design a 5 speed dogbox.

    • Also, can synchro rings be purchased in the USA for these transaxles for 2002 & before model Subarus? I can't get them in Australia for my MY02 Liberty.

      @De19thKingJulion@De19thKingJulion9 жыл бұрын
    • Actually, yes I can. The business who were going to rebuild my transaxle said they couldn't get parts, but the local Subaru dealer can supply them. Never mind.

  • Hey Matthew, thanks for the video. I have a question about my 05 outback xt. I am pulling it out tomorrow, but I BROKE my front driver side axel when launching and turning, ( stupid I know) Wondering if my front diff is broken. I replaced about 5 axels and each on broke within about a mile of being fixed under low power.

  • awesome video, thanks. my forester popped out of 5th under load. I can start the car and drive it but neutral grinds badly and I cant get it into reverse no matter how much force I apply. the grinding in neutral goes away if I press in the clutch. it will start in neutral but the grinding starts after 20-30 seconds. once its in gear it neutral cant be selected with the clutch out. any ideas? help would be very much appreciated!

    • The clutch fork is broken get the reinforced one from torque solution s also replace the pivot ball because it will cut into the new one. If it's a cable clutch replace or jerryrig the new fork. If it's hydrolic clutch no need for modification I have 275k and iv gone through 3 forms already. Next time I will get the reinforced one

      @jbcell8510@jbcell85103 жыл бұрын
    • @@jbcell8510 thanks. I checked the clutch fork, there was no damage, in fact it's been used on a replacement box, no problems. My guess is clutch slipped or syco went and all the crap was floating around inside. I still have the old box lying around. I keep meaning to open it up and take a look. A word of advice to anyone fitting a new box, make sure to have all the seals replaced before fitting a used box. They're super cheap and externally fitted (unlike VWs where you need to open the box to fit seals). You can easily do this yourself. I was in a rush and couldnt wait for parts. Took a gamble and all 3 drive/propshaft seals leaked on mine and needed replacing soon after.

    • It could be the shaft bearings, but if that were the case it would also grind in gear. My best guess is it damaged or dislocated the synchro for 5th gear when it popped out of 5th which could also explain why it's hard to shift into reverse. I'm thinking the synchromesh is constantly applying pressure to reverse gear which may also explain why it's hard to engage. This is just a guess though, I've only rebuilt and seen the inside of a transmission once in person so I'm absolutely no expert.

  • I'm having trouble finding gears that work with my mystery fwd 5speed manual Subaru transmission. there no serial numbers or identification on the case. It's in my 1993 impreza. Any idea as to what it is or what would fit? Need a new ring and pinion that's 12 inches long and a 5th gear with syncro. Thanks for any help and advice.

  • Hey I have a question I know that this is an old video but I have a 2010 subaru impreza and I was replacing my clutch. While taking out the drive axel on the driver side a small tiny spring about 3 inches long cane out with it. What could this spring be?

    @danielmontoya31dm@danielmontoya31dm4 жыл бұрын
    • Good luck with that one lol Could just be a random spring that was sitting there

  • hey i have a 2010 subaru wrx wagon, i took apart the transmission and i dont have the speed sensor or the grooves on the output shaft for it. Nor do i have that clip on the end of the input shaft where the 5th gear syncro is. when i look at the diagrams on subaru, it does not show any of these parts. do you possibly know any thing about these differences?

    @whitelion4072@whitelion40726 жыл бұрын
    • White Lion the more modern suby transmissions (08+ I believe) don't have speed sensor the ecu uses the ABS sensors on your wheels to determine vehicle speed.

      @xXiamsniperXx@xXiamsniperXx6 жыл бұрын
    • What you call that clip thing on the end of the input shaft is part of the synchro on reverse gear. If you don't have it on your input shaft, it means you don't have a synchro on reverse.

  • What are the smaller bolts on the side of the transmission? I un-did one by accident thinking it was my drain bolt and I couldn't get it back in. It also had a spring behind it and my Subaru transmission puked it's gear oil out through that hole. Would you know what it is called?

    @fightingfalconfan@fightingfalconfan7 жыл бұрын
    • fightingfalconfan maybe the speed sensor?

      @AmyOlsen7@AmyOlsen76 жыл бұрын
    • They are the detents for the shift rods. There's no need to take them apart if they are working. If you thought it was some kind of drain, you need to get a manual.

  • Did you die or fall off the face of the earth? If neither, what kind of progress did you get to with the dog box setup. I'm building an obs and that's where I'm at. Awaiting some bearings for the trans but I need more info. Don't leave me hanging.

  • I have a 14 impreza what do you mean by shifting without the clutch? If I did that it would be toast in a month. Am I missing something?

    @orgophile1@orgophile16 жыл бұрын
    • As long as your engine and transmission speeds are in sync, you can shift without the clutch. It takes practice, but it's possible to damage the transmission while doing that practice.

  • Hello, I have a 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX 5MT. The problem with my car is that when it is off, it shifts into all gears without any issues but when it is on , it doesn't shift into any gear. If I start it with a first gear it does move but it doesn't let me shifts into other gears. Any ideas how to fix this ?

    @carlosjmuniz@carlosjmuniz3 жыл бұрын
    • You have a clutch disengagement problem. Your clutch is not fully releasing. This causes your input shaft to turn while your clutch pedal is all the way down.

  • Hey, so what you say at 6:46 about the shaft for the 1-2 fork popping out when you try to go into neutral from 1st, well that’s exactly what has happened to me and I can’t seem to find any information about getting it back in. There’s some sort of pin interlock system like you mention blocking it from going straight back into its bore. Any ideas?
