Welcome and Happy Swiss national day! (1. Aug). In this video, you’ll have a chance to See Switzerland’s main east - west transit route from Geneva in the south west through to Zürich from the driver's cab of a tilt train. Special thanks to Brad for recording this video.
The route closely follows several of Switzerland’s beautiful lakes, including the lake of Geneva, the lake of Neuchâtel and the lake of Biel. For the train enthusiasts among you, there are also plenty of private railways and interesting locomotives we’ll be passing. For this video I have labelled selected trains and locomotives with their operating number, year of manufacture and manufacturers (labels in pink). Next to the station names, I’ve included altitude in meters. The maximum allowable speeds are also shown on the bottom right of the screen as they come into effect. On a number of occasions where the speed is limited due to signalling, the signal colours are shown at the top right of the screen. This is to help viewers make sense of the different colour combinations.
As we pass junctions, I have included purple comments on available videos in the respective directions. These videos are (or will be) linked below for your convenience.
Where gradients over 1% (1 unit vertical climb per 100 units of horizontal travel) they are included in the upper right corner. The larger number indicates the promille value (1/10 of 1%) and the smaller number the number of meters the gradient will follow.
Below you'll find the linked connection line cab rides mentioned along the way:

  • I'm impressed at how Swiss rail tracks are clean. Rail tracks elsewhere are dirty, full of rubbish, grease from the trains, the sides have lots of abandoned wagons, parts, and derelict disused buildings. They're generally depressing places. In Switzerland, even the railways are spotless!

    • I lived in Switzerland for four yrs late 1960s/early 1970s. There was no graffiti anywhere, none at all. I'm very surprised the Swiss tolerate this and don't have school kids out there cleaning it up.

      @austindarrenor@austindarrenor Жыл бұрын
    • @@austindarrenor, at that time graffiti weren't a big thing anywhere in the world, not just in Switzerland. And there are rebel youth and, unfortunately, marginalized populations and alcoholics/drug addicts/antisocial/mentally ill people in all countries and cultures. Now, I'd love to wake up one day and find that my house had been painted by Banksy or some other of a few great graffiti artists, but unfortunately they're exceptions rather than the rule. Most graffiti are ugly and MEANT to be so. They're meant to be vandalism, and that's a different story.

      @goytabr@goytabr Жыл бұрын
    • @@goytabr You're right. We didn't used to see graffiti on freight rail cars here in the USA. Now it's a rarity if there ISN'T graffiti on rail cars. But knowing how persnickety the Swiss are I'm surprised they haven't come down really hard on it and done something effective to clean it up and stop it.

  • Two points. I think this video must have been taken at the end of March, as there are very few people travelling. -Am I right? Secondly, it is clear from the platform indicators that the train was NOT going to St Gallen. The IC5 trains from Lausanne go through to St Gallen (and use tracks 31-34 at Zurich Hbf). The IC5 trains from Geneva turn round in the Haupthalle in Zurich Hbf.

  • Excellent video! Thank you. Such beautiful scenery! One of the most striking differences between the infrastructure in this video and what we have in the UK is in the fencing alongside the railway. It seems that in Switzerland an ordinary fence, such as you might have at the bottom of your garden, is perfectly adequate; and sometimes there is no fence at all. Swiss people, it seems, are expected to behave sensibly, and not go playing on a high-speed railway line. In the UK the railways must have fencing that would keep out an army. Often it's terribly ugly - miles and miles of metal, palisade fencing with spikes on top, six feet high. The presumption is that people have to be kept out because they don't know how to behave. If somebody gets through a fence and is injured, the railway might well be sued. It's safety culture gone mad, in which people are not expected to take responsibility for their own behaviour. Maybe I should move to Switzerland - it is so beautiful and I have a couple of Swiss friends who have told me I'd love it. I'm a bit old to consider that now, even though I am intrigued by a culture in which the grass in fields looks so neat that it must have been cut with nail scissors. And as a life-long railway enthusiast, there would be so much to enjoy about Swiss railways.

    • I too appreciate all the things you mentioned, especially the general trust in the public to do the right thing. I visited London recently and was really surprised at how many signs there were everywhere for blatently obvious things and sometimes written in a way that makes you feel like you're surrounded by criminals. For example "Smoking is strictly prohibited. Offenders will be prosecuted". The Swiss equivalent would be "Thank you for not smoking here". Sometimes I wonder how the world was when people were more sensibel and had more freedom. It's a shame that it's usually a minority that ruins it for everybody.

    • @@lorirocks777 Thanks for such an informative, honest reply. Swiss people can rightly be proud of what their country has achieved, in so many ways.

    • @@Martin_Adams184 To be fair, not everything is better here in Switzerland. People tend to be rather cold and some outright closed-minded, especially in the German-speaking part where I'm from. However, I have to agree that it's probably a case of "the grass is greener on the other side of the fence." Not everyone is like that, of course, but it can be difficult for new residents, just so you are warned. 😉 Other than that, I have to agree that our country is exceptionally beautiful and many things here work really perfectly. If you decide to visit, make sure to go to the Lake Zurich area/Zürcher Weinland/Schaffhausen/Thurgau. Apart from the Alps, these are some of the most beautiful regions in Switzerland, in my view. I do love the UK by the way. 🇬🇧 I like your black humour and your heritage (castles, nature, culture, Dunkirk spirit, etc.). I could imagine moving to the UK to live in a snuggly little cottage in the country once I'm older - Beatrix Potter-style. 😅

    • @@hockneyfication Thank you! That is a delightful response, especially because it is unafraid to say unpleasant things, but does so with good humour. There were things I wanted to say in my initial post about the railway journey, but did not do so at first because I did not wish to insult any person, or a culture that seems, on balance, to be admirable. One of the things that has lingered in my mind, from knowing several Swiss people (mostly German-speakers), from reading widely, and from looking at forums like this, is epitomised in my mention of fields that look as if they have been cut with nail scissors. This is not unique to Switzerland. I felt the same way when I was in Sweden and visited a friend's out-of-town "Summarstuge". I got a slightly worrying impression that if I lived in this large group of small wooden houses and failed to cut my lawn, if I put the washing out on the wrong day, if I failed to obey the rules about recycling, there was a band of smiling neighbours ready to report me to the authorities. I might be wrong; but that's always been a background reservation. But Switzerland makes great cheeses; its methods of democracy are worth thinking about seriously, especially in their support of localism; its railways are brilliant; and most of the people I've met or have known have been amiable. Thank you!

    • @@Martin_Adams184 "If I ... failed to cut my lawn, if I put the washing out on the wrong day, if I failed to obey the rules about recycling, there was a band of smiling neighbours ready to report me to the authorities"... 😉 --> You exactly describe Switzerland in the 50es, 60es (before "1968"; for insiders: "Der Waschküchen-Schlüssel" by Hugo Lötscher). I think, now it's become much more openminded - at least in bigger towns (where you won't see nail-scissor cut lawns any more between the empty packages of Big Macs and used Corona masks.) And as to the fences: Once you have stood innocently on the open platform of a provincial train station and a train has passed by less than a meter in front of you at 160 km / h, you no longer need a fence in the open area. Try it in Münsingen for instance... BTW 1 fun fact: My last train journey in Britain was in 1996 in a HST 125 Bath-London (seats much more comfortable than in the above shown Swiss tilting train and the elder double deckers), my first one in 1975 Salisbury-London; would like to travel by train in Britain again... Regarding nippy people: In autumn 1976 I had to wait 20 minutes for a train at Kings Cross (or something). I put my luggage in front of the platform gate and had a coffee next door. In time I went back to my luggage (which was still there!). Suddenly I felt that I was being scrutinized by dozens of eyes: The queue had established itself aside and I was standing at the front - but aside! ... Quickly and meekly I crept 100m back to the end of the line.
