★ 200km/h 🇨🇭Cab Ride Basel SBB - Bern, Switzerland (InterCity) [05.2018]
Welcome aboard an InterCity service between Basel and Bern. We'll be travelling on the new "Bahn 2000" line between Olten and Bern, the only line predominantly in the open to allow speeds over 160km/h. The Gotthard and Lötschberg base tunnels being the remaining high speed lines.
The video depicts the current state of the line. In the near future I will be uploading a video of this route as light signals were still operated alongside the ETCS Level 2 (Cab signalling).
Interesting on this trip are the various construction zones along the way and how they have been transforming the railway since. In Wankdorf (52:47) for example, where they are building an underpass to allow trains to cross paths without obstructing each other's paths.

Swiss railways are so pleasant to see. Greetings form Italy.
Vielen Dank.
Great Video! Travelled this route a 100 times when I used to go to Swiss Jazz School in Bern. THX for posting :-)
This is how I imagine the view from the cab of the locomotive. Perfect !
Thank you for the captions explaining the tunnels, bridges and other lines. Very helpful in understanding the line.
Thanks for the excellent map. I open the video in a second screen and pause it at the map to follow progress.
For all you fellow 'Mericans ,bad is not awful, but a spa,in German. Greetings from Bicycle Bob.
What a wonderful and beautiful video! Thank you for sharing, I enjoyed this very much!
Enjoyed the video. Well done!
Very interesting cab ride from Switzerland! I was travelling around that region in June and it was everything you could ask for as a railway enthusiast ;-D Best regards, Tuukka
Thanks. Yeah, its a railway paradise.
great video friend, hugs from Brazil
...und wieder eines Deiner Super-Videos! Herzlichen Dank
Thank you for posting this interesting trip. I couldn't believe my eyes where this line took us. I remember the Bern-Basel line in the early 60s. This of course is much faster. I see in 2004 they built all these new tunnels. Living down under now, I am proud of the SBB Organisation. They can show the world how a railway system should be structured and run.
Glad you liked it. I'm pretty happy with the SBB too - but many people still have complaints. I supppse the better a company is, the higher the standards become of the customer.
Amazing... thank you for the ride!!!
That was very interesting ! Thank you for sharing !!! :):):)
Another great cab ride! I never enjoy high speed train travel as much as I do on the classic lines but I enjoyed this one! Happy New Year!
Beautiful Railway Journey, Love the 🇨🇭 Swiss Scenery 💞
Excellent video, Lori :) Enjoyed watching this cab view at high speed, very well executed video my friend :) Thumbs up and best regards from Poland, Mike!
Thanks Mike. Love your work with the drone too :)
Absolutely Brilliant footage.
Wonderful cab ride and beautiful views
Thank you =)
I always enjoy these train rides and some times I follow along on Google Earth. 😊
Excellent. Good camera. 👍🏻😃
I simply love mountains.... I guess that if I ever become millionair and want to buy a dreamhouse, Switzerland will surely be considered... Nice cabview ride also ;)
Thank you :)
Amazing , spetacular very beautiful trip ....congratulations ! ! !
Thanks!
@@lorirocks777 Ok we're toghether.
I have been recovering from a stroke over the last 12 months, very slow recovery, i have enjoyed your video's. I love the squeaky cab on this perticular ride, it's fun, thank you for sharing all your video's you must work very hard, credit due too you....Paul.
Thank you, I wish you all the best going forward.
@@lorirocks777Thank you very much indeed for your kind wishes, it's very much appreciated.....Paul.

But those of the 3 dislike, what mental problems do they have? congratulations Iori, beautiful video!
Four late passengers. They don't like it.
Let Switzerland be Putin-free, please!!
Video molto bello. Traffico notevole su questa linea. Grazie e cordiali saluti.
everything is fine and excellent! Beautiful country, beautiful trains, cleanliness and order! Thank You for the trip, even if it is virtual! Success To You! )))
Thank you =)
Thank you for the share. mein lieber Liestal 😪 Last time I was in Basel/ Liestal 1993!
Nice fast 200km run on a very straight line 👍🏻
Absolutely Beautiful
Thanks so much for this.
Glad you liked it
Super video!
Amazing! I hope some day go there!
Switzerland is such a beautiful place.
With all the crap graffiti all over buildings it's not. Years ago, none of that would have been tolerated. How the country has changed. -- BR
beautiful journey thx.
Awesome video and great channel. Liked and subbed.
Thanks!
A couple of days ago i walked down the entire path on the left side between 44:20 and 46:00! Its crazy when the trains rocket by me!
Einfach Top👍👍👍
So quiet and smooth ...
Train stopez is minimums so enjoy the journey nonstop amazing
A.farr, nice to see someone else doing the same thing. Venice to Verona. Nice.
very nice journey
Qualitativ spitzenklasse
Wonderful trip!!
Nice video! Love the landscape. The tunnels are a bit boring though.. I think I'd cut those out myself. Not sure how I'm going to tell my friends that I'm moving to Wankdorf though ;)
wow wonderful
Bom dia Pernambuco Brasil.
Hermoso.....gracias 🇺🇾🇺🇾.....😘
comfortable ride
Nice journey. A lot of tunnels though.
Switzerland Is Amazing
Sensacional !
I did this journey as part of my holiday trip from St Pancras International in London via Paris to Basel on onto Grindelwald via Bern and Interlaken. Trains are a much better way to travel and more relaxed than flying in my opinion. Great video view of this journey
Thanks for your comment. Glad you enjoyed it.
Top ! 👍👍👍👍🚄🚂🚇🚄🇨🇭🇨🇭
Loved the video.! It wouldn't hurt if you included a take of the train itself either at the beginning or the end.
I usually do, however this was an older video.
Thanks!
I will be in Switzerland in November! Staying 3 nights in Bern. My first time! So excited.
Nice! Hope you have an unforgettable stay.
Cool!
Wie immer top.....Aufnahme Bahnhof Liestal bereits historisch! (Ende Juni Beginn Vierspurausbau Bahnhof Liestal).....Gruss aus Ziefen
Vielen Dank. Ebenfalls :-)
Love from India🇮🇳 and thanks for Matterhorn Mountain moment. Really Thank you very much Switzerland.🇮🇳🤝🇨🇭
From that point, the train was going to go back the way it came in and switch tracks at Wankdorf and head first to Thun and then on to Interlaken, I know that from reading the sign up above the the platform to that track, saying what the train's next destination was.
At 30:23 the locomotive at the end of the train in Olten crossed the second switch from this train. 9 (!) seconds later it was put correct for this train and we got a green signal. Amazing quick!
Yes, as soon as the track is relayed back as being empty, the new path can be set.
Super Video. Sonst top. Danke.
Danke
Great video, thx! If possible could you add some footage of the train from the outside at the start of the video?
Yes. Thanks.
Hi Lori, great trip again always enjoy your filming, I have a question please, along the track side are signs blue back ground with yellow arrows pointing towards the tracks, what purpose do they serve its got me baffled? thanks TG
Thanks. They represent signals in the cab signalling system know as ETCS.
@@lorirocks777 Thanks for answering my query,it all adds to the use of today's rail signal technology. TG
Bonne continuation! Amical bonjour de Lyon en France!
Thanks for fine video, Lori! Switzerland is beautiful! I wonder, why there is no light in the tunnels. The driver controls the way with an LCD monitor, radar / infrared / ultrasonic? And why there are few passengers on all stations? '
Why would there be light in the tunnels ? (Sorry, just normal for me here in Switzerland). For the number of passangers, I believe it's because mostly commuters take the train at those stations. I was on the first station (Liestal) one time at peek hour and there was at least a hundred people boarding the (absourdly long double deck xD) train.
@@xeetzer5478 Thanks for Your answer! I asked why the drivers don't switch on the train's front lights after entering a tunnel. Do they use some kind of night vision devices? It seems unsafe to drive in total darkness...
@@SergeT0925 on the 200 km/h section there is the ERTMS, which doesn't have conventional signals, because all of the info regarding speed and line clearance is relayed in the cab, eliminating the need to look out for signals (except when needing to stop, as you have to stop before the next marker, the blue square with a orange arrow), and also tells the distance to the next marker to ensure speed limits and stopping positions are respected.
@@elperenza Thanks!
imagine being a Swiss citizen and taking this route to work/school every day
That would be a dream come true
As much as I love our trains, having to commute from Basel to Bern daily would be a nightmare...takes way too long and is way too far. I think there is practically no one who commutes on this route daily.
@@Schnabeltassentier it can be a nightmare but the worst is the bern to Zurich train as such services can be full at 5am sometimes.....
@@Schnabeltassentier that's me (before home office came) and I actually enjoyed it a lot
Switzerland is a beautiful country, would very much like to visit one day
Very clean and clear imagery. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Were you really doing 200 km/h? I sure seemed like it. Thanks for sharing!
I'm glad you liked it. Yes, between Rothrist & Mattstetten I drove 200 km/h.
200 kph ( 125mph ) is the standard mainline speed in UK.
@@fredgrove4220 Please refrain from developping your private versions. The global standard notation for speed is km/h (not 'kph').
I had hoped to be travelling this route in early July but now it looks as if this video is the nearest I shall get! NB Once allowing for the optical speed-up effect caused by using a wide angle lens nowhere did it appear to be going near 200kph.
This wasn't a wide angle lens
Bern-Zürich Intercity cab ride, please!!
Youre not satisfied with this ?
Got to love those tunnels! I would love to see them filmed with a low-light camera like to one found on the Huawei P30 Pro. Thank you.
Was there an active speed limit all the way from Liestal to Tecknau? Any idea why?
Speed limits: Muttenz 125 Tunnel 160 Liestal 125 Lausen 120 Sissach 100 After Gelterkinden 125 Tunnel 140 These speeds are due to curves and switches.
In Lausen ists einmal so, einmal so.
Nice! :) Which IC-line and heading number were it? Did you sit in the locomotive or in the driving trailer? Which model of passenger coaches was it?
IC61. In the locomotive.
@@lorirocks777 Ok. Thank you! Which model of passenger coaches did the locomotive pull?
@@UHarshanBlackBoy1995 I'm pretty sure they were the IC2000 type.
@@lorirocks777 Ok. Thank you very much!

Are there sub classes of the class 460? This locomotive was fast but on fairly small gradient (low torque, high speed) and yet others climb mountain passes with freight (465's of BLS and 460 of SBB in the 2000's ) (high torque, low speed). The 460 are now replaced by multi voltage locomotives on freight but the 465 are still on the BLS.
No, they're all the same. I guess induction motors allow for higher speeds even when motors are geared in a way to provide sufficient torque. Even driving ES 64 U2 locomotives (capable of 230 km/h), I am surprised at how much torque they have a low speed, able to pull heavy trains just as effectively as ES 64 F4 machines, which have a top speed of 140 km/h. The Re 465 units do differ from the 460s. They have 6 pole motors instead of 4 pole and each motor has its own electrical equipement, allowing for individual motor control. This helps in wheel slip situations. All in all they're slightly more powerful.
@@lorirocks777 Thanks for the info. I know Siemens have a slip control which allows a small percentage of slip to improve acceleration and performance. Also used on USA and European diesels electrics.
@@lorirocks777 Induction motors are self-correcting for wheelsleep. The magnetic field rotates around the stator poles and the rotor follows behind; if the wheels slip, the rotor overtakes the magnetic field and there's a braking effect instead. I believe good handling of induction locomotives when starting heavy trains is to keep them on the verge of wheelsleep, which is quite different to how you'd drive a locomotive with commutator motors. How much manual control is there in a Re 460 or ES 64 U2 compared to a Re 4/4 II ?
@@zoqaeski I have to say, I don't notice the self correction you mention in practice. Once the wheels of a 460 start spinning, they just keep going, which makes a loud squealing sound, until the wheel slip brakes are applied. The motors are controlled in pairs of 2, whereas the 465 controls each motor seperately. During acceleration, more weight is present on the rear wheels, so the 465 adjusts power accordingly to minimize wheel slip. Manual control of the locomotives is similar, the difference being that Re 4/4 IIs have 32 steps of power (mechanical) and newer locomotives have a "stepless" system, thanks to the newer electronics. Re 4/4 IIs also have a wheel slip system which applies a light brake and steps down power if necessary.
@@lorirocks777 That's interesting. I'd read about the electrical theory behind three-phase motors on locomotives, but not being a driver I'm completely unaware as to how they perform in practice. The train operating conditions manuals here in Australia have all sorts of rules about which locomotives can be coupled with which others due to the different handling of three-phase motors.
The speed limit line is 200Km/h but appear for more high speed about 250 / 270 km/h . Do you know something about @Lorirocks777 ? Anyway is another good video. :)
Thank you :) Unfortunately I don't know any more. I know that 250 km/h is possible in the Lötschberg / Gotthard tunnels.
You can easily check whether Lorirocks777 is speeding, or not. Count the seconds, his his train needs to pass a tunnel. Divide the lenght of the tunnel by the time. Multiply the result by 3.6. You will get the velocity in km/h. Speeding however is virtually impossible under control of ETCS Level 2 Full Supervision. Punishment is provided instantaneously. ;-)
@@debrainwasher Not to mention the beeping :)
