★ 🇨🇭Bellinzona - Göschenen - Wassen Gotthard cab ride [08.2019]

This time we have a look at one of Switzerland's most famous railways, the Gotthard pass, starting from the south in Bellinzona and ending in Wassen, about 10 minutes short of Erstfeld. It's amazing to see this feat of Swiss engineering, constructed between 1872 & 1882, winding through mountains, spiral tunnels and the central 15km Gotthard railway tunnel.
With gradients of up to 2.8%, it was a challenge getting heavier trains over the pass, especially in poor weather conditions. Switzerland repeatedly broke records in constructing powerful locomotives to do the job, both for the Gotthard and Lötschberg passes.
Since the base tunnel opened in 2017, most traffic has been redirected, eliminating the need for bank locomotives and making single locomotive intermodal trains possible (via Luino).
In the future, the trip will be re-recorded and made available through to Erstfeld.

  • Super tolle Fahrt, Danke.

  • Absolutely fantastic trip! The scenery is breathtaking at times and I made a point of following the route on Google maps on another window. So, in every little town the train stopped I paused it while the train was in the station and I took a virtual Google street exploration, a bit like being there! It's great because it opens up for me new destinations in Europe on my next trip there, places that I never visited before. Thank You so much for sharing your trips with the Y.T. crowd. Much appreciated.

Some of the most fascinating engineering solutions, the many spiral tunnels, on both sides of the Gotthard.

The Northern Italians and Swiss must be one of luckiest people in the world to live in such beautiful surroundings... And everything so *clean.* I know this from experience, having travelled the Bernese Oberland by train - all the way up to Kleiner Scheideg! . 54:30 - Gotthard Tunnel - Train goes into 'high warp' - fantastic. // *The Gotthard Tunnel* is a 15.003-kilometre-long railway tunnel and forms the summit of the Gotthard Railway in Switzerland. It connects Göschenen with Airolo and was the first tunnel through the Saint-Gotthard Massif in order to bypass the St Gotthard Pass. It is built as one double-track, standard gauge tunnel. At it's highest point, the tunnel reaches -1,106 m (3,629 ft). Between1882 and 2000 the Gotthard Tunnel was the longest tunnel in the world. //wiki refers.
