    • while that would probably work on it's own there are two (sort of 3) reasons that I doubt it'd work smoothly with what he has 1 : he already has majorly skeletonized the design. Topology optimization is typicailly given a frame-body shape to start with and cuts away material, does a simulation of various loads, cuts away or re-adds more material, lather rinse and repeat. Since already has skeletonized it to the max though it wouldn't have as much freedom and likely couldn't make much progress 2 : the body of the mouse is also a mechanical component, bending to actuate the switches. While this could likely be modeled somewhat via top. opt. the body of the mouse *_also_* affecting the characteristics of the click could cause issues 3 : I think the far bigger optimization is integrating 3 dimensional support structures. As it stands the mouse is straight walled which, while simple, isn't nearly as stiff as it could be. You could cut away a good bit more of the material and keep the same stiffness if you used angled internal struts to support the walls and stop them from bending inwards directly rather than just relying on material stiffness. In theory I think topology optimization *_could_* do this, but I've rarely seen it ever used in 3 dimensions like that, I'd wager just because it increases the mathematical complexity significantly. Working in 3 dimensions is quite literally infinitely harder than working in two, and I imagine that practically speaking it's just not really viable for most projects compared to designing the struts by hand.

  • Saying "I won't release it because I don't think you can print it" is such a cop out. There are plenty of people who will be capable of printing it to a standard they are happy with, or perhaps even exceeding what you're getting 3rd party. If you want to monitize it just say so and do so. This is the same logic apple uses for anti right to repair rhetoric.

All he'd need to do is adjust the side grips to have a 45degree tilt at the front and you can literally print this mouse standing up on it's face without a single support. Or in parts. Yes casting is stronger but for something like this, it's irrelevant. Especially since it'd be about $2 in filament AT MOST and layer weaknesses could be worked out in the design. I do casting, mold making, printing, etc. And while it's good that those without printers can buy his kit, the excuse of quality is largely bs. It's his to do with what he wants though but his excuse rings pretty false.

This has been a huge issue for me as a gamer given that most vertical mouse have horrible performance. I get that a full vertical version would be very hard to do, but if you ever release a version with a bit more extreme vertical tilt then I will buy it. That’s my main issue as a (sloppy yet legit) bhopper. I love how there’s a gap between the mouse buttons and the wheel on zowie mice, harder to unintentionally scroll. Would be cool to see a similar guard (probably vertical oriented walls instead of the horizontal spacing) making it harder to scroll without intent. Keep it up! 8000Hz bubbles in the back of my mind.

  • This is super cool! The only thing I'd say is that you should include the files with purchase of the kit or make it a separate purchase. Perhaps provide sourcing info too. I only say that because over time people will likely need/want to replace their shells and since you said you aren't planning to support the original design, having those files will let people fix their stuff rather than waste it. Though I understand the reason why you wouldn't want to as well. Perhaps down the road when newer iterations coke out you can release old ones as a sort of compromise.

I'm doing something similar to this, but with an aggressive fingertip approach, and the outline of the PCB board along with the switches and what not are extremely daunting to get down. Small, lightweight fingertip mouses seem to simply not exist for some reason?Razer's software is also pretty nice, so that's definitely a plus That being said, I'd really miss the DPI button as well as the side buttons. • i still think you should release the 3d file. make it open source even, and still sell the modkits to those who don't have access to 3d printers. warping and scarring is kind of negligible imo and can be fixed really easily with sanding and grip tape. (this also opens up the possibility of modifying it to fit other pcb's... thereby reducing tech waste so you can modify mice that you already own instead of going out of your way to buy a 300 dollar mouse). holding the file just makes it seem like you're aiming to create artificial scarcity to make a quick buck and isn't good for innovation.
