Transformer Rise of the Beasts: The One Nobody Saw

This franchise used to break box office records. Now it can hardly make a dent. But hey, at least they're finally making alright movies. Thats what I'd describe Rise of the Beasts as. Decent, flawed and one that nobody saw.

  • The biggest issue with this film? It dropped Unicron too early. Unicron is a Thanos-level "ultimate" villain. This movie should have been three separate films: one featuring the Autobots vs. Decepticons (which could feature the Noah and Mirage friendship plot since it was genuinely fun), a second film featuring Maximals vs. Predacons (so the Maximals get enough time to shine as main characters rather than just being on the side) and then finally save Unicron and his heralds for the grand finale of a trilogy. This movie tried to fit in all three concepts at once and wasn't able to realize any of them to their full potential.

  • Fun fact for those who don't know... Beast Wars was is a historically important show because it followed ReBoot in being a fully 3D rendered CGI show on a meager weekly show budget and insane schedule. It could do it because of the shift from super expensive software meant to run on super expensive SGI workstations (and mainframes just a few years earlier) could now be run on what was essentially desktop computers. Shouts to Mainframe and Alliance (the production companies) for breaking new ground with ReBoot in 1994 and following up with Beast Wars. As an early 3D animator on my Commodore Amiga's, these folks really blew me away. Hat's off.

They consisted of: Sinnertwin, the angry, two headed fire breathing thing. Blot, the sickly bridge troll. Ripper Snapper, the stealthy walking shark. Cut Throat, the psychotic bird creature. And the leader, the glutenous Hungrrr. They also combined to become the raging Decepticon, Abominus, who to quote Micheal Mercy "is so stupid it once took him an hour to cook minute rice."

  • TF ROTB is definitely a great movie in my opinion, but it is a film that could've benefitted as a Rise Of The Autobots story than as a Rise Of The Beasts story. Just looking at that early concept art with Trailbreaker, Sideswipe and the rest of the gang makes me imagine what we would've gotten, but overall I still absolutely loved the end result though. Hopefully the new Transformers One movie will be everything we want since its finally taking the story to Cybertron and focusing on the robots this time.

My dad worked in the Montreal part of the movie and was responsible for the transport logistics. So everything from trucks, van location, lodges for actors and staff and all that. btw the movie was filmed in the summer of 2021 even though in came out in 2023. So for that whole summer my dad would come back from work with the wildest stories of that day. for example, the initial police chase with the porsche in the beginning of the movie kinda went wild during filming seeing has they crashed 14 of them. its not rare to crash several cars during filming (fast and the furious probably hold that record). Another cool thing is usually when production wrap up, especially the big ones staff gets a gift. for transformer my dad got a blanket made of llama fur from Peru with a transformer logo in the bottom corner. Idk if this worth anything but has far as i can tell this is pretty original and it actually has a cool link with the filming of the movie (best gift he got for a movie was to keep the director chairs for the movie Arrival(2016)). Although my dad has work on countless bad movies' like this one, i can understand how he likes doing what he does. I made a community post for those who want to see the things we still have from that movie, here is a link to some photos i just took really quickly: kzhead.info/tools/-ybHxuRR8INwz3rw9dlvPA.htmlcommunity?lb=UgkxmCx4h9g1SgGqEmSJ3J4QkAgbcQNa0fy8

  • Maybe its my clouded childhood nostalgia, but another thing that seems to be missing from RotB is that larger-than-life aspect the Transformers had in the previous films. In the Bay films, the Transformers looked big, felt big, and left devastation in their wake as they fought in cities among the human populace. Michael Bay really liked to show how huge these guys are. Even in RotF, they didn't fight in a big city, but they still felt big as they fought in a Forest from Sam's perspectives. The climax of RotB kinda reminds me of the desert fight in RotF, but kinda worse, fighting on this flat plane without much scale.

Size is something the cartoons even never really got that right because they still ultimately had to turn in to cars and stuff that the human characters had to get in to, so the scale always seemed a little weird. Massive sentient robots SHOULD cause a lot of destruction, it was always weird to me how people say Michael Bay ruined that particular part.

Yeah, they were more cohesive than the Bay designs, but they ended up like a good 3/4 the size of the bay versions for the most part, and they didn't feel nearly as powerful like you said. It felt like some big people fighting and not giant robots. It was fun, yeah. But I honestly prefer most, if not all the bay films to this for entertainment and maybe even story. Hasn't really improved much story wise. Watched it yesterday on HBO so now I can finally watch this video. So many of your cut-away clips were the exact reactions I had to plenty of moments in this movie. In that opening sequence when they showed the key I said to myself “well here’s our McGuffin”. In Noah’s first scene when he’s repairing the cable-box the “I’m an inventor” line played in my head. Mirage’s “they fly now” made me think of that scene from Star Wars RoS. “Whelp, guess Bee is dead again for now”, which didn’t have much impact because they had shown him fighting in the final battle in the trailer. Overall I enjoyed the movie, it wasn’t the best or groundbreaking but it was far from the worst and was very adequate. Though for a movie called “rise of the beasts”, the maximals didn’t get much focus. Even with only four being present, only two were characters. I know nothing about Beast Wars and have no knowledge about them outside of this movie and what you added, so I feel they should have had a larger role in this movie. Noah wearing the Mirage suit of armor in the final battle looked a bit like Samus and just felt odd. Like everyone else here, I was fully expecting the reveal to be sector 7, so G.I. Joe really came out of nowhere and gave my a good laugh. I still hope they do another movie after this one.

As long as the visuals are good. And as long as the media doesn't do something stupid, lazy or just there for the audience to cry...i never cried once watching those movies. But Wall-E made me cry just by the opening music alone at one point, but the movie itself? Didn't shed a single tear. So yeah. Not that much of a media consumer huh. And thats why i watch your videos so i can remember them. Keep up with the good work!

  • I think the one thing that really bothered me was the characterisation of Optimus. I know he's younger here, but I always thought of the first Transformers movie was the best version of Optimus, he's hopeful and kind to species different from him but he also has an edge to him that does what's necessary because of his experience in the war of Cybertron. Plus, isn't the reason why he's chosen to be Prime is his kindness to everyone? But also, G.I. Joe? I think they're trying to do that Kong and Godzilla crossover thing (or a Hasbro Cinematic Universe jfc) but at least they're both huge monsters, this was just so jarring.

People like my mother along with my aunts, who couldn't give two shits about transformers went to see this in theaters. I know its hardly little more than an ok movie with less than interesting human characters, but seeing Cuzco and those wonderful shots near Macchu Picchu and Sacsayhuaman certainly made it special for us, and having some minor indigenous characters was also heart-warming. Too bad the part were the final battle occurs is just made up with generic CGI.

Yet another one: "Ms. Marvel" and her Pakistani family. Want one more? "Blue Beetle" and his Latino family. All these movies were seen, discussed, and supported by the "represented demographic". Even if a few of them didn't make billions, they made more than they would without their location and/casting decisions. As much as we 💩 on "woke casting" and what-not, human audiences like to see themselves represented *positively* on the big screen.

Bay's movies put a permanent stain on the franchise, ask most casual viewers about TF and they'll only think of the bayverse, nothing beyond that cause that's all they know and been exposed to.

  • I actually preferred Noah over Sam. Sam's emotional hang ups honestly had very little relevance to the Transformers directly. But Noah's desire to look out for his brother is very comparable to Optimus's plight. But I think we could have had Air razor provide the exposition more than Elena(so more screentime for Air Razor). Also Rhinox and Cheetor(but definitely Rhinox) were done dirty in this movie. Edit: Thanks everyone for the likes! I seem the counter is going up and up. Currently at over 350 at this point. Edit #2: And we're over 450 likes! Thanks everyone Again all in all Noah is arguably a better written character than Sam at least for TF1 and potentially TF2. We probably can't get Noah or other characters like Noah for the next few movies but he's a good template. I still would like to see Noah having a cameo in the next movies at least if possible.

Could've just used Prime, Arcee, and Mirage (with Bee at the start and climax of the flick once Mirage is out of the movie and in his suit mode) as the primary Autobots and that's it. Save Wheeljack for another film with a variation of his G1 design shown in Bumblebee. Could've just used Scourge (a name used for characters in both Generation One and Beast Wars), Nightbird (primarily a Generation One character), and Quickstrike (primarily a Beast Wars character) as the primary Terrorcons and that's it. A good combination of villainous characters from different versions of the franchise whom are visually distinct from one another that people wouldn't mind being Terrorcons as Unicron's enforcers in this incarnation.

    • @@DieHardAlien We have to be careful about how many characters we exclude from a movie since there's no guarantee there will actually be a next movie that continues the storyline. While I can agree "less characters can mean more" for a movie, if the movie does terribly, the next movie will probably just axe the current characters(the execs can assume the current characters weren't liked so no point in having them take up screentime in the next movie) and we won't see the characters "we saved for the sequel". Sometimes certain characters only really work well with other characters being there as they did in the original show. If Rhinox had some lines, it would have been great to have him talk to Cheetor. A damn shame.
