Wood Turning a Cube

I made a cube out of mahogany, and woodturned it into a 3 corner bowl on the lathe. Well, maybe more like a 3.5 corner bowl... This was my first project using a bowl gouge, and I feel like a beginner again. It's very satisfying when it works, and very frustrating when it doesn't. I have a lot to learn, and sharpening my tools is at the top of the list.

  • This was my first time using a bowl gouge, so my technique is pretty bad. I had trouble staying on the bevel, and sharpening properly. But man is it fun! Ironically my worst catch was with my carbide tool I've used a hundred times...

    • It turned out nice, there were some articles in back issues of AAW magazine in creative ways people fixed breaks and cracks so it became a decoration. Maybe even use a dremel to make the break look like teeth Mark's like someone took a bite out of it. It's interesting how one can tighten those jaws town and the wood still jumps out. Thanks for sharing.

  • I’m a retired engineer and I now own a custom wood fabrication shop and I can completely relate with the frustration at having a great piece flip off and break. I thought he handed that well and he didn’t stomp on it (obviously not saying I’ve done anything like that... obviously...) Yes I might have destroyed a project that I had spent 60 plus hours on cause something went wrong and screwed something up. I blame it on being senile. If my grandsons hadn’t been there I am sure that sailor’s would have been offended. Great save on this gent’s part and I wasn’t disappointed by the design of the bowl. I was hoping (when my grandkids showed me the thumbnail) that he would do something like this. All the best to you and yours!

  • CW, If you step back and listen to the noise the gouge and piece were making just before it came out of the chuck, you can definitely hear the change in tone. With experience, you will recognize the chatter and instinctively stop what you are doing to reevaluate. If you can remember what you were hearing and feeling at the moment before failure, you will drastically cut down on mistakes like this. Always remember that wood compresses, and the scroll chuck has to be tightened regularly.

  • The jaws on the Nova G3 have no substantial holding power on a tenon. The dovetail is made for a recess. My advice is either get a different chuck with dovetail jaws for the tenon or use a dovetail recess on future projects. Good luck to you!!

  • When turning to inside part of the bowl, It's best to turn from the center to the outside edges to avoid the catch that broke one of the corners. Turning from the outside to the inside, you are just asking for a corner to catch the tool...as you found out. However, doing it this will will make the outer edged prone to tear out. This is not an easy bowl to turn even for the most experienced turner.

  • The three winged bowl is not as easy to turn as it looks. I can’t tell you how many blanks I have screwed up trying to turn one of these bowls. And the to make things more difficult, I got one of my fingers whacked by one of the wings. The air turned blue. I will give it one more try by turning one off these bowls out of red cedar. It is a 6” x 6” x 6” blank and has some punky areas where the wood has been eaten away leaving worm type indentations. Thanks for sharing your video. You got much further than I did when I tried turning one of these bowls.

    • Cook Woodworks My next attempt ended up as kindling for my fireplace. I got the backside done OK. It’s when I turned the blank around and mounting in the Chuck is when the problems began. I used a 1/2” bowl gouge to start hollowing out and all I did was make big catches in the wood. One catch broke the dove tail tenon and made turning impossible. I will try to glue back together and complete the bowl....if possible. As the old song from the rock group QUEEN says “Another One Bites the Dust”.😩

    • My wife liked the single "modified" corner, so it stayed as it haha. I got a 1/2" Sorby gouge to start. Next up is a skew and parting tool probably. And I was having more catches than normal with this one, I think it might have had something to do with the grain orientation. The diagonal alignment gave me a lot of tearout, so I'll blame it on that. "A good craftsman always blames his tools", that's how the saying goes right? Oh wait...

    • Concept is interesting. Always looking for variations of how to mount wood, and create different profiles. Any turning video, with 95% watching a blank turn and being shaped is not fun, sorry. No I didn't catch the catch, should have been reduced. no explanation on how to mount, nip ends, for safe it using spur and live center, before chucking. A damaged item, hardly sanded what is it for, honestly. THe concept and end could have been done in 90 seconds.

  • The wood being shaved off of it lulled me almost to sleep and then i heard the falling of the wood and then “bleep. Bleep. Bleep-bleep” and then i opened my eyes very confused and rewinded

  • To make a bowl with n corners, begin with an n-gonal trapezohedron. A cube is a 3-gonal trapezohedron. A ten sided die is a 5-gonal trapezohedron. I don't know a method for constructing arbitrary trapezohedrons. It would likely involve sawing n sections off of a block of wood from a single point, each sawed plane being rotated 360 degrees/n about that point, followed by sawing off n sections from the opposite end off set from the initial cuts by 180 degrees/n, changing the off set would modify the shape of the corners of the bowl.

  • Perhaps I haven't thought this through properly but, after making the cube, if you had cut it diagonally into two pieces you could have made two bowls?

  • More speed can be your friend when there are pieces like this where you are turning a lot of air. If you have a bandsaw and a spindle sander how about cutting 3 equal “scallops” out of the corners to remove the damage?

  • You know you could flatten both of the mounting points to get a better more stable grip on your project...that wouldn't impact the look of the piece at all...good luck with your future projects...

  • if you put a tiny bit of Salt on the fresh glued workpieces, it grabs in the surfaces and prevents the pieces from sliding around.

  • FYI - when it came to seeing the final result, three links for your other videos came up and obscured the shot. Maybe wait a few seconds in the future so we can appreciate the finished result. Otherwise, very nice.
