🌿 these pigments are an exclusive collaboration between Choosing Keeping and a lovely pigment store called Saiun-do in Japan. I've talked about these pigments more extensively in my other recent videos as well.
💧Gloves & Respirator?
🌿 YES. I should 100000% be wearing gloves and a mask. If I wasn't filming I would have. However, the last time I wore gloves in a paintmaking video, the sound of the gloves were unpleasant to listen to to many people. I decided for the sake of the video to omit them. However, yes. Gloves are very necessary especially if you are not working with pigments specifically made for Nihonga paintings.
💧 Why add honey?
🌿 this step is optional but i prefer to add it since it gives the paints a nice texture. it will also preserve moisture.
💧 Filming Equipment?
🌿 Camera: Sony A7rII
Lens: Sony - FE 24-105mm F4 G
Mic: Rode Video Mic
Tripod: Slik Pro 500 DX
💧 Why don't the pigments fit back in after crushing them?
🌿 (Someone more knowledgeable, please correct me if I'm wrong) I'm assuming it's because the pigments were much more compact before being crushed. In its "rock" form, the powder is super compressed and tight which allows it to fit into the vials.
💧 Why make handmade paints rather than buying ones at the store?
🌿 It's kind of like cooking your own food. There are delicious meals you can buy from restaurants but food made from home is a different kind of delicious.

  • When we remember Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian and Van Goth, we see what they did before they painted. Often semi-precious stones were ground to paste, because their color never changed. The same was true with many oxides. The Australian Aboriginal tribes sell dozens of ochres of different colors. All are colors that never fade.

  • She is an absolute artist in every step of this video. From the cinematography, to the "setting" the tools used, to the level, quality and number of disciplines she uses is amazing! The pigment turning into paint was also visually beautiful as well as relaxing. The colors and the use of the glass tools again beautiful visuals. The studio, so beautifully set. Could see the wind blowing outside, the brightness of the sun, then the sunset/evening. The editing... Are you kidding me? Where does her talant end?

    • No Name ah, it’s just how you know sometimes you hear something or smell something or see something, etc and it just triggers this completely other sense? That’s kinda what’s happening here. By watching and hearing the pigments being crushed, it triggered a feeling in my brain making me want to eat it, just for the texture. Sorry if I’m unclear, English isn’t my first language

  • everything about this vidoe is so pleasing, the way she sets the glass down, crushes the pigments gently but slightly forceful for that perfect crunch, the way she taps on the bottle for the last pieces of pigments to fall, the objects she use, the quality and just everything. And I mean evehrthjng, i took the time to pause in frames to see every detail and it was just absolutely splendid. Very amazing and really underrated! Edit: also i didn’t expect this to get like 300 likes. Holy shit.

  • Thank you for stopping by! 💙 Please leave any questions you may have so I can add it into the Q&A list in the description box. A few notes: GLOVES. I should be wearing them - but for the sake of the video I decided to omit them due to the noise they make. However, it is crucial to wear gloves to protect yourself from the pigments, especially if you are working with pigments not specifically made for Nihonga painting. I am also so so sorry if you hear any background noise (sirens, people walking around, breathing). I don't live in a quiet neighborhood and my microphone can be unforgiving. Admittedly, this is not a super clean ASMR - I am still working on improving the audio!

    • I make my own watercolor too! If you don’t have the mullet and the glass you can make it in a good mortar, the pressure you do in the walls help a lot to emulsify and integrate all the ingredients! My watercolors are so soft and they blend beautifully!

    • I agree. It’s a very calming activity, and really doesn’t involve a lot of effort or elbow grease. They’re just having fun, doing what they love. Something similar to this is Ice-cream roll making. Me and my brothers love it, lol.
