LYRICS
Stand up straight now,
Can’t break down,
Graduate now,
I don’t want to be here, I don’t want to be here,
It’s a taste test,
Of what I hate less,
Can you die of anxiousness?
I don’t want to be here, I don’t want to be here,
What’s about to happen? What’s about to happen?
I remember, I remember certain things,
What I was wearing, the yellow dashes in the street,
I prayed those lights would take me home,
Then I heard, “Hey kid, get out of the road!”
Can’t feel my legs,
I might suffocate,
There’s a pressure in my chest,
I don’t want to be here, I don’t want to be here,
What’s about to happen? What’s about to happen?
Can’t change what you’ve done,
Start fresh next semester.
It’s a taste test of what I hate less,
I don’t want to be here,
Start fresh with a new year.

1:30 is by far my favorite part of this video. The repetition of the event over and over like PTSD, and how the memory evolves over time as part of healing, finally becoming the version of himself that anticipates the car and confidently jumps out of the way

In the old Chinese proverb, it is called, those who understand the past cannot be remonstrated, and those who know the future can change it. It comes from an article written before 1700 years ago. This makes me very sympathetic, 21p and the touching feeling in my heart after reading this article. This is what 21p wants to express, different approaches but the same purpose

This bridge live is going to be a religious experience.
Word. See u there 😉
But like literally though for me as a Christian fan who picks up on those themes 😂
@@cooljen94 that is actually claiming a false idol ( bearing false witness)... not to be that guy but yeah...
@@SmickyD I mean, that’s a big assumption to make as to what I meant. Is saying going to church is a religious experience idolizing your pastor? God gets the glory for using Tyler and Josh. And if you mean “can’t change what you’ve done, start fresh next semester” somehow being false witness, I see it as the same as “his mercies are new every morning.”
@@SmickyD false idols are not the same thing as bearing false witness those are two different commandments. and there is nothing idolatrous about listening to Christian music
I absolutely love the symbolism in this music video. The clip of him in the road replaying over and over again represents Tyler replaying traumatic moments again and again in your head, and the fact that the clip changes and he runs in a different direction could be mis-remembering those moments. At the end when he's surrounded by people in the road, it's the feeling of coming back to school after being away due to mental health, and your classmates hearing about it and judging you, but in reality all of those people were at his concert, representing support for him. This also explains why he says "start fresh next semester", because the next semester can feel like a new beginning and an opportunity to start over and do better.
I agree with you.❤😊
This is what Tyler meant when he said: "stay alive everybody, it's worth it i promise". Im soo glad i did.

TWENTY ONE PILOTS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST ARTISTS OF ALL TIME
Fr🔥
TRUE
Man this isn’t my favorite… BUT the ending is insane!
I’m sorry? It’s THE greatest.
YEAH
To me he’s describing an event that he’s already described but this time he’s not using metaphor or allegory. He’s basically exposing one of the real stories that inspired the creation of an allegorical world. The world of Trench and Dema isn’t lore, it’s an allegory where the characters and places represent different parts of Tyler’s psyche, which he used to examine and better understand himself.
Yes that is all true
This is THE definition of a grower and man it doesn’t stop growing. This song is such an incredible experience.

I lost my boyfriend to suicide in December and so listening to this song makes me think of him. I kind of put myself in his shoes and it makes me sad that my boyfriend felt like there was no other way out. When Tyler says, “I remember certain things. I love pop-punk with all my heart, and one of the reasons I've been listening to this band since I was NINE ('09 fan gang), is because they were such a damn good electronic / punk / poetic version of that. Hearing them sing a like, TRUE, pop-punk song is like cradling my nine-year old self and letting them know it's okay. I'm so glad I stayed alive for this.
I am at the worst place I've ever been. Nothing in my life is okay. When I was a kid, Car Radio got me through it... And then, today, on the day I start realizing nothing matters at all, I find the comments saying, reminding, pleading, "stay alive" and I don't know why to stay alive, or what for, but it was the reminder I needed. Thank you, Clique.

How are they so versatile?! Tyler can rap insanely well on stuff like Overcompensate and Levitate, sing melodically on songs like Legend, or be an absolute polymath by pushing this punk-rock esque vibe on what is easily one of the coolest tracks they’ve put out in a while. So hyped for whatever these two put out on the full album!
I think it's because the healing message in the lyrics comes first, and the style of music second. He's not really tied to one genre that he loves above all others, so it's free to experiment with different styles all the time. As long as the lyrical themes are still there it's a T0P song, whatever the music sounds like.
@@Jonny0Wactually that’s a great point. I think that he finds the message before the song and adapts the style to whatever fits the motive etc. It’s insane how many genres he’s able to pull off though!

So far, listening to TOP and meeting the moving stories of fans, I kept telling myself that my little problems are not so important. But that song changed something about me. I'm at a very important moment in my life right now. I'm having a hard time in college, which has always been my dream. That's probably why I wanted it to be perfect. However, I encountered various difficulties, I made mistakes, I almost dropped out of college. From now on, I will try not to dwell on the past, but to focus on the future that I can create. Thank you Tyler, thank you Josh, thank you to all the inspiring people - fans of their music. "Can't change what you've done. Start fresh next semester!"
i get chills each time i listen to this. without hesitation
I think I’m realizing that this whole lore isn’t just based on Tyler’s fight with mental health, but also him dealing with his “attempt.” I feel like the Heavydirtysoul music video was him first taking that moment head on, hence the car burning up and then he escapes into trench after battling it and he is feeling better. I feel like this music video shows that the cycle never breaks and he has to face it again, but since he is in a better mental state he’s pretty much reliving it through this video. It was obviously a really traumatic experience and it makes this song so sad but so beautiful at the same time.
With Josh being in the road I feel like that’s because he doesn’t battle with depression like Tyler does, as he’s able to face things head on and they swerve out of the way for him. Idk might be reaching but just a thought.
I got more lol. I think him performing and then it going to him reliving that moment is him using playing shows to help him battle depression. That’s why when he gets out of the road, it cuts back to him playing music
This is a super interesting theory

*eras*
you forgot the baldness
Exactly!!
The ukulele part almost sounds a little reminiscent of Heathens too.
Tyler is the best alternative artist of his time. Don't forget josh
The range in creativity between all their songs is mind blowing!💥 Love this! Love them! Hometown show here I come!🥰
IMAGINE thousands of people singing the final part of this song in a concert… That I’d definitely love to see & hear
I don’t know how I’d feel about Trees not being the final song.
@stejoel He's not saying this should replace Trees, he's talking about the ending of this song.
Tyler is my "hey kid get out of the road"
this is the best comment you get it
Oh my gosh. Dude why has this comment not blown up
i actually started crying
this fucking blew up my mind
ouch ouch ouch
I get that there is metaphor and symbolism attached to the lyrics and mv, but in my current situation as a final year student I can’t help but take the lyrics at face value. While this is my last semester, the sentiment of putting the difficulties behind me and ‘starting fresh’ from here on is quite inspiring to me. I was annoyed at myself for missing the release of Overcompensate and Next Semester, but now I feel I was meant to hear these lyrics now.
This band got me through so much. This song means the world to me
I literally don't know if I'd be alive today if it wasn't for this band. Their music helped me so much through some hard times.
This song is literally what my darkest time was. I used to walk down the side of the street close to the gutter and look for cars because I didn't want to be there. A few times, I went out in the middle of the street and just sat on the ground on the yellow lines. I totally cried listening to this. I am doing so much better now and my "next semester" is going better. Thank you so much for making music that touches my soul and speaks words of hope.
Glad you're here remember, if you're blue again...Sahlo folina you're not alone🌻💛🖤
Yesss. This part was so powerfull to me cause I've done the same. Sometimes I'd push myself in front of something but I used to hear like God talking to me and cars would swerve
I'm glad you're still here! 💜
i'm glad you're still here
Thank you, I hope you are doing better in your journey.@@juliar407

I love 21 pilots so much! Going to a concert for my 18th birthday! 🎉 God bless you guys❤ you’re an inspiration
As a teen reacting to this song is a real experience. This album so far really brings comfort and energy I love to see
My dear friends, we are alive in this era when Twenty One Pilots are in their prime. Let's enjoy it, be thankful and stay alive.
For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures; that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures 1 Corinthians 15:3

Absolutely one of there best songs so far. Blew me away again
This song actually has a huge impact on me because I always regret things and wish I could change them but it’s really good to hear “can’t change what you’ve done” from him so now I actually regret things less because I know really really know tagt I can’t change things and I can’t even if I really wish I could
the sound of this album is everything i could’ve ever hoped for
yesssss
The song is remembering his life as a young, angry and depressed teenager. They took inspiration of rock genres from that time period and blended them all in one song. Incredible. Every time they do the chorus, they use a completely different instrumental technique and style. They are so versatile. It’s amazing. This is ART.
This exactly !
What an utter masterpiece of a song. Thank you, Tyler & Josh, for sharing these brilliant gifts with the world. Wow
I'm going to see you guys in september!!!! I'm so stoked words can't explain
That's so lucky 👍
@Lexi-tn1ig thanks! I am really lucky :)

I needed to hear this , surprisingly my life’s timeline goes exactly with the albums they put out , so you never make me feel alone. I feel like you understand what exactly I’m going through , it’s a weird coincidence.
this is going to be the greatest album of all time.

I know that you prob didn't wanna be here, but I wish you would've listen to the "hey kid, get out of the road". In another universe maybe you'd still be here, we would still be friends and we would go to a top concert together. I always think about the times you and I listened to top together, so now you're in each song of them I listen to. I hope you are in peace now, m
