A lineup of glasses joyfully share ideas, growing in scale after each exchange. But the jubilant cycle is halted by a stubborn jar whose head is already filled.
Animated by Patrick Smith
Produced by Kaori Ishida
Associate Producer Eason Lu
Music by David Berges
Director’s notes:
"Pour 939" is an animated cartoon that was initially drawn as an exercise in visualizing the close minded, and their role in halting a fulfilling exchange of ideas. This simple metaphor was never supposed to be a stand alone film, but the more time I spent drawing it, the more I thought it could hold it's own water (or wine). Interestingly, this short film has no real story, it's simply an illustration of an idea: The moment when people who freely share thoughts are confronted with a person who is closed up. I chose the number 939 because it felt very stubborn and limited to me.
Technical notes:
This film was drawn in Adobe Animate, using a Wacom Cintiq. There are many excellent programs out there (ie flipaclip, marmoset, or doodle) but I use Adobe Animate mostly because it’s the same as the old Flash, which is really the only one I’m familiar enough with to have a consistent work flow (although I’m currently teaching myself toon boom harmony). Since I’m a traditional animator, and don’t do any type of work for gaming or 3d, I work frame by frame in a 2D manner. My last film that I drew on paper was “Masks” which you can watch here: • "MASKS" Exploitation l... @Tea_pot612@Tea_pot612 Жыл бұрын
  • A bit of a darker interpretation: 939 has his head already filled with some pretty heavy and dark knowledge/secrets he doesn't want anyone else to know. 938 sharing their knowledge isn't going to change or cleanse the dark liquid from his mind and soul. Screwing the lid on, he is sparing others from the pain of what he knows, keeping their innocence, so the secret dies with him. Others may try to help him, and/or are curious what he is hiding, but they ultimately leave him alone in the end. Some secrets/knowledge/events are best left to die undiscovered and not shared because future generations would be better off without it.

Maybe they get transferred to a city type place with other wine glasses where if they want to do something they have to show their number for confirmation? Or perhaps a bar where they get served off to people? Ur animations are amazing and the fact you can make so much character development with no dialogue at all impresses me. • A lesson that tells us to not dread in your problems, but to head towards a better future. The glasses could represent your problems being solved one by one, some can solve other problems, and other problems resort to other problems, in which if they are solved, other problems will be solved. But there was one problem. A problem that is hard to solve. Yet no solution could crack this problem, there was one solution that could help: moving on. People tend to stay in their problems, having regrets, and dreading from these past mistakes that can no longer be undone. But we can move on to a better future, it's not like we can't. Just move on. A lot of people cry about their past mistakes, or even their past relationships, but just move on. A better future awaits.

  • I think liquid is a metaphor for love. Each glass transferred its care to another and he grew morally. 939 closed from others, it is already filled with another liquid, darker, this is most likely the reverse side of love - anger, irritability, sullenness. But such people arouse interest in society for only a couple of minutes, then they "step over" this person and restore the usual rhythm of life. While an evil person remains alone without moral growth.

In 585, all the glasses looked the same with the same bored expressions, being filled from the same large glass to be transformed into an exact copied image of the big glass. The only one who’s afraid is 585, until he’s forced to be filled and grows bigger, taking the original glass’s place as the tyrant. In this one, however, all the glasses have different shapes. They all look happy, sharing ideas with each other, except 939, who closes himself off to them. However, instead of forcing him, the others just leave him alone, since he’s not really doing anything bad.

  • Your animation style is very much your own and incredibly unique. You've quite the gift. The drawings are relatively simple (not a bad thing by any means) but the fluidity, consistency, weight, and liveliness in your shorts definitely makes for a very recognizable style. Your grasp on the physics and movement of things is also very impressive. Please never stop what you do. We all really appreciate the work you put into your craft.

  • My theory is that it’s like teaching. They each fill eachothers mind with knowledge, while they are all not the same. Like how one glass uas a straw, and how one has a lemon. That indicates how different each one’s personality is, even though they’re all willing to share their knowledge. :)

Love it!

  • This is the message I see. Also great animation love every second of it. People always spread their word in society. And sometimes that is a good thing but it’s another path for corruption to spread. Everyone is open or blind to seeing this. But once in a while someone sees it. And they seal themselves from it. There people aren’t always the smart ones. But then again sometimes they are.

  • Wow… how are these (pour series) all the same, but completely different? I love that you’re managing to sustain and grow as an independent artist/animator. I’m assuming your animation style is straight ahead (correct me if I’m wrong), is your story planning the same way? Or do have a grand scheme you’re working toward?

    @studiomiguel@studiomiguel2 жыл бұрын
    • hey man! i approach these fairly typically with a storyboard (ie kzhead.info/sun/jbeTiZeqinSqpIE/bejne.html).. as for animation, the only element that is straight ahead is the liquid, everything else is keyed and tweened. thx for comment, always great to hear from another animator.

  • There's two sides to the closed minded jar. His head is full so he can't take the others thoughts, but in closing his lid he makes it clear he also won't share, And thus the wine representing thoughts doesn't ever change. Even when passing through so many different types of glass. The thoughts inside are all identical, so he remains small and alone.
