    • how cold does your part of the UK get? there is much flow difference btwn 0 or 5 weight oil in the winter (0W, 5W). The operation temp viscosity (20) is probably more important. non turbo, the '20' is probably ok. Turbo, a '30' could be better...find a oil that is available and meets spec.

  • I say one should use what oil the manufacturer recommends. My 1GR-FE in my 2021 4Runner TRD ORP calls for 0W20 so that’s what I’ll use. 0W20 is full synthetic anyways, but I’ll probably just keep using Toyota 0W20 oil. There’s small orifices and channels that require a 0W20 oil and you can get into some trouble switching to a thicker oil. Also DON’T go 10k miles on an oil change as they recommend, change it every 6mos or 3k-5k miles. Great video brother!!

    @KendrasEdge757@KendrasEdge757 Жыл бұрын
    • Except you are wrong about the oil orifices requiring 0w-20. Your same engine in other countries is allowed up to a 0w-30 or 5w-30 and it's the exact same engine. Most engine (not all) that specify a 0w-20 can go a grade higher a be fine. My owners manual specifies in writing that a 5w-30 is allowable despite a 0w-16 being reccomended for mpg and nothing else.

      @AEVMU@AEVMU11 ай бұрын
    • @@AEVMU no, not wrong. I said you CAN get into some trouble switching to a thicker oil. Doesn’t mean you will have any problems, but that it’s possible. You certainly can. Using a thicker oil and the owner listens to the incorrect advice and changes it every 10k miles, the oil gets dirty, it’s thicker, and smaller channels can get blocked up limiting oil being allowed to flow freely to other areas of the engine. It most certainly happens. Furthermore I said one should use what the manufacturer recommends. If they recommend something different in a different country than so be it, use that, but that doesn’t just mean that you can use said oil everywhere. Some manufacturers have slight differences in the engines in different countries. Typically that’s just things like emissions equipment either having it or not, but they don’t always tell us what’s different. The weights of oil recommended by the manufacturer has some to do with the engine internals, but slightly more to do with the climate the engine will be sold in. Such as a truck in South Africa or a truck in Alaska will have different weight oils recommended by the manufacturer.

      @KendrasEdge757@KendrasEdge75710 ай бұрын
    • @@KendrasEdge757 The oil orifices do not require a 0w-20. That is 100% wrong. If that engine can take thicker oil in any country, then the oil orifices can take a thicker oil period. ALL oil is too thick when cold anyway, even a 0w-8 is thicker when cold than a 15w-50 when hot, If oil orifices needed a 0w-20 than they would all fail when cold and all the oil would end up in the top end. Plus many 30 weight oils are thinner than many 20 weight oils when only 10c hotter and vice versa. Going up a half grade or a full grade is not going to negatively affect an engine except if you go too thin (0w-16 or below) in an engine not designed for it. Even my 2022 Corolla hybrid (Prius engine) owners manual, which is ''recommended'' to use 0w-16, specifically says a 5w-30 may provide better protection and is allowed. Cats get clogged due to the composition of the oil, not the viscosity and VVTI gears are perfectly fine with going up a grade as well, otherwise they would throw a code when 10c cooler than ideal operating temp, and yes, your engine will vary that much in temp depending on use/terrain. 0w-20 is recommended because in the US Toyota can't recommend anything other than what it was certified for, and mpg is part of the certification.

      @AEVMU@AEVMU10 ай бұрын
    • @@nicholasroberts9618 manuals say different specs in different areas of the country is my understanding. Whether you’re in northeast or southwest I’d imagine would recommend different viscosities of oil. For example, I’m in southeast area and this is copied from my manual: 8-1 Specifications: page 523 • Engine oil selection "Toyota Genuine Motor Oil" is used in your Toyota vehicle. Use Toyota approved "Toyota Genuine Motor Oil" or equivalent to satisfy the following grade and viscosity. Oil grade: ILSAC GF-5 multigrade engine oil Recommended viscosity: SAE OW-20 SAE OW-20 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather. If SAE OW-20 is not available, SAE 5W-20 oil may be used. However, it must be replaced with SAE OW-20 at the next oil change. • The OW in OW-20 indicates the characteristic of the oil which allows cold startability. Oils with a lower value before the W allow for easier starting of the engine in cold weather. • The 20 in OW-20 indicates the viscosity characteristic of the oil when the oil is at high temperature. An oil with a higher viscosity (one with a higher value) may be better suited if the vehicle is operated at high speeds, or under extreme load conditions. One should stick with what their manual recommends.

It is recommended to use 5w-20 oil, however the engine starts to consume oil at around 2k miles after an oil change. I am thinking to try a light 5w-30 grade such as Pennzoil Platinum. It is a bit thicker than a thick 5w-20 oil but less heavy than other 5w-30 oils. It feels that 5w-20 oil is shearing and this J37 isn't easy on the oil. When I change my oil it is a golden brown and I can clearly see thorugh it has it drains . Unlike so many others of their oil being BLACK when it is changed . I think with the thinner oils to use whatever anti-friction oil additive you want . As a safety factor against any potential abnormal wear .

When a engine has 200k miles on it the rings, cylinders, and bearings are worn out and have more space between them. You want thick oil so it can fill in the gap and keep a good coating of lubrication. Stay with 5w30 and if you see the oil pressure is low you could try 5w40 but prepare for a engine rebuild soon.

Toyota went to a full synthetic engine oil back in due to their VVTI systems and requiring thinner oils. They went to a 5W-30 and increased the frequency of the engine oil changes to 5000 miles. VW had BG make their engine oil that came with BG MOA. Much of those gelling issues began to disappear. IMO engine issues will increase by extending the engine oil change intervals. • In some engines with low-tension rings, a higher viscosity oil can increase oil usage. The low tension rings ride up on the more viscous film of oil, allowing that film of oil to enter the combustion area. Same way a lighter car will hydroplane more easily than a heavier car, assuming identical tires.

      @Resistculturaldecline@Resistculturaldecline9 ай бұрын
    • lighter cars aren't any more likely to hydroplane compared with a heavier car. Hydroplaning has to do with evacuation of water from under the tires more than anything. Insufficient tread depth and driving too fast is guaranteed way to hydroplane in any vehicle regardless of weight. Just remember, container ships float and they're in the thousands of tons. Oil control rings gumming up is more of design issue with them being low tension and pistons not providing sufficient cooling which allows them to gum up due to the high piston temperatures. The higher the spot temperatures in the engine, the more likely the oil will burn and carbonize in the ring landings especially if it's a thinner oil. Low viscosity oils are mostly for moderate to cold climate cold start benefits. There are no fuel economy benefits with thin oil when the ambient temperature is above 95F because the viscosity of these oils is at most 15 centistokes less than the thickest oil. 0W-16 vs 5W-50. The biggest difference between the oils is when cold or warm which are in the thousands or hundreds of centistokes respectively. Using a PAO oil such as the Mobil 1 European formula 0W-40 or Castrol Syntec 0W-40 or the Amsoil reduces oil consumption if there is any by half. "fake synethic" as the video author has alluded to is something specific to synthetic oil sold in the USA because European oil needs to be a PAO oil to be considered "synthetic" while in the USA, it just has to have additional processing done to it. @@Resistculturaldecline

    • Stick with the thicker oil. That's a good engine in there and when I switched with a thinner oil on that engine from 0W-30 to 0W-20, it got worse fuel economy. Switching back to 0W-30 improved the fuel economy. Fuel economy gauge on the car made is very obvious the fuel economy penalty with the thinner oil. There is little benefit with a thin oil unless a very cold climate or lots of short trips, assuming it's not 'too thin' which for your engine likely is.

I have a 5 quart of pennzoil ULTra platinum 0w20 and a 5 quart of 5w30 of the same PUP. SHOULD I use the 5-30 in summer than go to 0-20 in winter? Or should I mix 50/50 to get rid of both jugs. Good for 2 oil changes. 5 quarts an oil change. It’s a turbo! Thanks.

    • Use 5w-30 in summer and do not go more 3k miles max. Same thing with 0w-20 for winter and don’t go more than 3k miles. Do not mix two together.

    • @daveroski , manual is wrong and written so that people buy vehicle right after warranty expires or keep investing money into extended warranty. Manual does not say about fuel dilution that your vehicle has that cuts oil life significantly and reduces engine life by big number.

Kind of sounded as if the engine would turn off. You think it could be related to the thicker oil? Never heard it before

  • In Pakistan 🇵🇰 Toyota recommends 5W-30 for 1ZR-FE and 2ZR-FE but they also happened to import these engines directly front Japan (fully assembled) and Toyota Pakistan just married the engine to the frame straight up and add engine oil etc. Toyota Japan and Toyota official recommends 0W-20 for their 1ZR-FE and 2ZR-FE Engines, so in that regards i started using the 0W-20 instead of 5W-30 and car feels relax, smooth, soundless and quicker and also MPG went up and engine doesn't feel too hot either. Overall 0W-20 is better for all of my Toyota cars now! 😅
