So for about an hour it is was beautiful to see snow making everything look bright… then it was a murky damp day and since then we have had lots of rain. So now it’s muddy and wet, rubbish conditions for farming BUT WE DID GET A SUNNY DAY this week. This video covers from Sunday through to Thursday this week - from snow to rain, to frost and back to wind and rain !

  • Your journalism background has served you well. You are able to convey everything about the happenings at Dale Farm. So vividly that I feel I am right there with you and Nick doing chores! The beauty of the farm and animals is like being in a winter wonderland and then the stark contrast of uncomfortable weather and mud! Watching the sweet sheep faces enjoy their hay is therapeutic and I think that Nick has found his connection to the Highland cattle therapeutic also. I will never tire of watching these videos. XX

  • One plus of snow on the ground is it puts the price of meat particularly beef up , was always a good day to take a fat animal to the sales 🤗

  • It's a tough life on the moorland farms. you had quite a bit of snow there. but it's a misserable old winter so far. loved that xmas tree in the village though ......looked so pretty in the snow. keep smiling guys xx

    • Hi Michael yes I find snow beautiful and exciting! It’s nice to have a few days before it melts but this melted instantly ! I sometimes wonder if I would be happier living somewhere with more stable temperatures- like hotter summers and dry cold winters with snow !!

  • I quite agree with your philosophy about walking around. I'm an octogenarian now and live on a boring estate but ALWAYS go for my 3pm+ walk around outdoors to get the circulation and mind working - I never know whom I might meet and it really does one good. Redbush tea and biscuits upon my return! 😋

  • Hi Joanna, You had a good spread of snow where you live. There was only a sprinkle where I live. It's nice too see, but it makes your job harder with the excess water when it melts. The Highlands feeders seem to be in much better place now...🙂👍🏻

  • Wonderland , not sure it winter , I sat out in thecsunlast week with a long sleev shirt . Its sleetu cold and damp today . Looks mucky wet . Well you have a reason to be out . Gotta kerp the livestock fed . Keep warm It is beautiful out . The foggy lanes look so enchanting . Loved the festive trees all lit too bring A warm glow . Thankyou . Delightful . Thankyou you inspired me to get out and enjoy the cold damp day . Snd i did .I feels so much better .

  • Thanks for the pictures from Great Longstone in the snow. We were in Great Longstone this spring. Visited my parents and grandparent's grave in the cemetery. Then parked outside the farm and walked a little bit of the footpath on your farm towards Monsal Dale. We always used to visit in the summer when I was growing up in America so it is a treat to see it in full snow.

  • Hey y'all, what a mess with the mud and muck! Glad to see you are doing what you can to reduce the effect of the mud. We are having too much warm weather all the skiers and ice fisherman are all climbing the walls to get some snow for there winter activity. I spend the winter inside a stack of garden seed catalogs.   • lol! not laughing at you, laughing with you!..same problem here in western new york!..last week it rained a few inches, then snowed 8", then rained another few inches and today is sunny and 54 degree f...more rain coming on sunday and then snow on monday!..lol...is all we can do! ...spread one load of manure today, was very soft and wet, will try again tomorrow...super muddy mess around the barns...all i can say is keep the faith and Happy Birthday Jesus!..best wish to all over there...

  • You tell a lot about the plight of the farmer in Winter weather Snowy & Eerie to muddy & slushy and then that fantastic temperature inversion & epic beautiful scenery - a lot of the toils & more positive moments I love the highlanders/Sheep feeding & the village Great Longstone with the Festive Tree and walking through all the snow we had on Sunday Amazing that sound of walking through the snow. Hope you get the Highlanders drinking out of their Water & your plans for the Campsite too. I like the walking you do checking on the animals looking after your mental health too - Best Wishes Joanna & Nick x

  • The inverted cloud formation is caused by the air above being much colder than the ground temperature which causes a fog like atmosphere.

  • looks really messy after the snow ......it always is , i hate snow for that reason ......thank god we managed to escape it over here .........just normal winter rainfall of late which makes a change .......... i like the .     • @@DaleFarm keep all the hay for the sheep ........feed bale silage to the cattle ......you have plenty of that ........sheep will eat it also but its a bit messy to be breaking open the big bales ......u are lucky to have lots of feed looks like a tough winter ahead .........and its never over till its over ........!

  • The starlings will eat things in the dung, maybe worms, bits of undigested corn, nuts etc . Earth worms and grubs often lay beneath the dung, finding shelter, nutrients etc and what starlings mostly turnover looking for.

  • 🤣🤣 This year has been shit from start to finish 🤦‍♂ roll on 2024 but not sure that’ll be much better 😬. Our fields are flooded out again (5th time this year i think) and every step you take in the other fields just squelches 😩. Looking forward to seeing what you’ve been up to digging

    • It’s been horrible hasnt it. Wet here on the ground since end of June it’s never dried out !! The digging work has stopped for now. Far too wet!!
