SA's problem is not money but a crisis of governance: Moeletsi Mbeki
As the country ponders over the budget Speech delivered by Finance minister Enoch Godongwana, Moeletsi Mbeki says South Africa's problem is not money, the country's problem is a crisis of governance. Previously Mbeki has said, that the majority of South Africans have lost all confidence in the ability of the ANC leadership to provide them with a better life, which could unleash all sorts of social ills. He also said that lack of planning amid high unemployment, particularly among the youth with no practical plan by the government, high levels of poverty, and people living in grinding conditions in shacks could unleash all sorts of social ills. Moeletsi Mbeki, Deputy chair of the South African Institute of International Affairs and political analyst joins us in the studio.

ANC is the big problem for south Africa 🇿🇦
The biggest problem is the people who voting them
I seriously doubt that the ANC will go peacefully.
I know they wont who would hire or work with them.
They won't. If they can kill each other for positions among themselves, imagine what they'll do to external opposition.
We must do everything in our power to protect our state buildings until elections next year... Nuff said!
The government is rotten to the core. From Cyril, the police to the clerk behind the counter at Home Affairs who sells citizenships.
I have the same fear - I think they will start civil war if they lose power. I don't see them going out quietly
I admire Mr Mbeki who has never used his relationship with his brother Thabo or the Fact that his father was Govan Mbeki to Blindly support the ANC and has always been a sober voice by holding individual yet rational views, a true African and son of democracy and who is much loved. A scholar and a gentleman indeed! Malibongwe!
check his involvement in arms deal, 25% stake in the company involved with Arms Deal scandal....he is not innocent...just protected or covered his tracks well
❤
I admire you Mr Mbheki for such honest naked truth. Thank you for sharing nothing but the truth, I admire your courage we need more men like you who call a spade a spade 🙏🙏
he has R55m holiday house courtesy of the arms deal, same arms deal Zuma must answer for......he is not comletely innocent
and yet anc leadership, the elite did not appreciate him. the anc are rulers , not governors
The quicker ANC loses, the closer we get true freedom and restore our dignity
China will save the day
Politics is a scam no political party will save you
The ANC supporters will still vote for the ANC , despite all allegations of corruption come 2024
@@harryramphele7102 It is not only ANC voters who are to blame. If we continue to vote for small opposition parties, then the ANC will easily remain the largest political party in SA for some time to come and will continue to loot and destroy our country. We can CLOSE the gap on the ANC by collectively voting for the Official Opposition, which is the SECOND largest political party in SA!! Please SA, use your vote strategically in 2024 to get rid of the ANC as well as load - shedding once and for all!!
The ANC will only lose if we unite behind and collectively vote DA in 2024 (instead of voting for hundreds of tiny, troublesome opposition parties!!) SA vote strategically in 2024!!
We as a nation suffer the consequences of a government that does not care for us. South Africa as a nation has had the resources and manpower to rise far above its history, and it has been poor governance that has held us back from it. Look at how developed countries are constantly pushing their names forward in the fields of science, economics, architecture and medicine, and then look at where South Africa is. We are sitting around expressing the same frustrations and having the same conversations that we did years ago, and if things go on the way they are, this is all we will ever do. The future of this country looks even more bleak than the present.
its called communism and it never works! Time for the ANC to go! The ANC ideas are outdated failed ideas from the 60s. Time to abandon the idea of redistribution!
Mr. Mbeki, you are a man with integrity. I wish SA could have you as a president.
This guy is one of ZA's best ✊😀 🇿🇦
Very wise intelligent man,I always value his input
Time for us young people to vote!!! Time for change family. Abuse is abuse no matter how you want to sugar coat it
They are not even sugar coating it. Why do you think they keep most of their citizens uneducated. Why is unemployment so high ? They do it blatantly so maybe the rural citizens will hear it by word of mouth ?
@Gusta Beumer ANCs vote is basically black older generation and and uneducated people. When elections come they will rock up in the townships with alcohol, meat and stories of Apartheid. I mean how many uneducated South Africans will even understand the conversation in this video. The opposition parties don't help by also being useless, but it's time for change
Amen
Have you seen Mac G's recent Podcast with John Steenhuisen on KZhead? It is a real eye- opener on many critical issues facing our country today including electricity, poverty, joblessness, social housing, land reform and creating generational wealth for poor people through property ownership. ( over half a million views)
@Toni Tappous I have watched the interview, but my personal opinion is that there is no opposition party that is built to lead South Africa, however ANC has run its race so we need to try the others out. DA I believe will help South Africa run in a much better way, but over the long term we will see that it would have benefited white people more than black. That is in essence what happens where they govern currently, but like I said at this point we need change regardless of who you choose to vote for, it should just not be the ANC. ANC is the grandfather who we have to accept needs to retire and go sit at home.
Wonderful interview... someone with insight! Wish you were our President!! I would love to vote for YOU!
We must really vote next year and vote for a better party than ANC, no emotions involved in voting and only then we can come up a better country
Unite and fight together.. it's the only way forward
No matter how much we vote, we vote to make more debt in order to pay debt. This reminds me of a father that gambles his families money out, and eventually children lose their lives throug hunger. The very own father and his business partners should pay for all the reckless decisions made in order to not lose face value with his family. Normally this costs the lives of everyone including the father.
you can vote better if you understand, if you dont politians will lie to you easily, they can promise you 5 million jobs, you will believe it, unless you understand how a job is created.
@@corinnevanjaarsveldt6087 if you don't vote for the opposition, you don't have the right to complain about the incompetent government we have now. We all need to stand together and vote the ANC out.
The people responsible for the mess in South Africa are the people who voted the current government into power. And this will be the outcome at the next election, too. As long as the voters are blind and uninformed, we will live in darkness. If you voted for this government, don't complain about loadshedding, potholed roads, poor water quality, etc, etc.
You are spot on. We shouldn't complain also about high level of unemployment. Let's hope these illiterates are beginning to see what the ANC is all about.

Thank you for open honesty Mr Mbeki. Very interesting interview.
I'll vote for him if he had a party and a team with the same wisdom and insight. We need this to disrupt the current corrupt cycle 👏. Someone like him will unite all.

No need for harsher laws, we need to enforce the laws. The state must apply the law, prosecute the corrupt thieves and put them in prison. That applies to corrupt politicians too. But unfortunately our president is also not clean with millions of dollars stached away in his furniture. Very sad indeed. Our ministers still try to convince us that the swimming pool at Nkandla is a fire pool. Are we the ordinary citizens really so dumb to just accept it.

So true, so very true!
Mbeki is right, I’ve been worried about Governance as far as ANC is concerned for sometime.
The problem is not the ANC. The problem is the judiciary. When the ANC is gone we need to replace them all.
We can go on and do this blame game for the next decade, or we can realize that we are a democratic state thus meaning that the real blame is on everyone that chooses to turn a blind eye on the problems that we're facing in our country, or chooses to keep silent and wait for the government and politicians to do something. THE MORE POWER WE GIVE THEM,THE MORE THEY WILL EXPLOIT IT TO THIER BENEFIT AND THEN WANT TO SEIZE EVEN MORE POWER. We ALL need to stand up for what we believe is right, otherwise we can't complain when it all goes wrong. SILENCE = CONSENT
The biggest problem that the National Party had was the fact that the whole World was opposed to Apartheid. (Segregation is rife in how many 1st World countries including the United Kingdom) That I think was the main cause of their demise. Corruption has now just moved to lower levels under the leadership of the ANC. I take my hat off to Mr. Moeletsi Mbeki as he is talking the truthful, facts.
Saying it as it is...
Old people (Mandela people), the youth, successful business people and tenderneurs are keeping this ANC government energized and relevant.
The old people thinks the grant money will taken away, these R350 also a way to make the youth depend on the govt…. I wish a lecture could be given to them that the grant is not going anywhere. Sad how ppl are fooled. Corruption, Crime, unemployment. Education , health system is in the drain.😡😡😡

I agree that it is in everybody's interest to VOTE! And the 'opposition' should do more to get people to the polls - make them realise that every apathtetic "It's not worth it" is in fact like voting in favour of the status quo

We've never had a competitive democracy in this country. If we can land up with a peaceful transition of power, I think we're onto something. Right now we can't even manage a peaceful transition of power WITHIN THE SAME PARTY.

Wish he was our president!
I usually love to listen to Mr Moeletsi Mbeki's views but I must say that I disagree with his statement at the beginning when he said that the crisis of governance within the National Party is what led to its ultimate collapse especially the exclusion of the majority of the people of South Africa from the vote. Herein lies my disagreement; you see, the National Party right from the time it took power in 1948 was structured and in fact conducted itself, as an elitist political party whose political, economic and social ideology was informed by a belief in racial supremacy and prejudice. That notwithstanding, it managed to successfully rule the country for 46 years until it was toppled by a popular vote in 1994. Bear in mind that during its rule, it went through several waves of international sanctions. When Mandela took over, he inherited a strong but unequal economy, meaning that the fundamentals of the economy worked like a well-oiled machine despite other ecomomic problems of the time. For example, the Rand was strong and families could be adequately supported with low wages and salaries. Inflation was also under control notwithstanding economic sanctions and the anarchy of the 1980s. Therefore, I would attribute the National Party's demise to shifting global geo-political trends which undermined its justification for the continuation of the policy of apartheid. (For the sake of my comment's length, I shall not go deep into that). Secondly, even if it had permitted other races into its ranks, let's say by 1970, that would have only served to achieve one thing, and one thing only; that is, "bring forward the date of South Africa's economic and political calamity" as is the case today. In a nutshell, had that happened, the problems of ESKOM, other State owned Enterprises and what not, would have started much, much earlier and by now South Africa and Zimbabwe would have been very identical in many aspects. I hate to say this although the truth is usually never pleasant anyway - posterity has economically vindicated the National Party to a very large extent. How? The National Party leaders, especially P.W Botha used to argue that a black-led government (with Socialist/Communist ideology) would ruin South Africa economically. May I ask where the country is today, several decades later? I however agree with the rest of Mr Mbeki's submissions and I sincerely hope that Leanne won't be fired for asking "counter-revolutionary questions" and making, "subversive comments".
His point on constituencies is really important. Instead of ANC appointing MPs (cadre deployment), THE PEOPLE vote for MPs. Therefore the MPs serve the people or they get voted out.
WE THE PEOPLE should tell the government what to do
Truth Sir Period and we know it hurts right
These public servants only serve themselves. Why not fire them all and reassign new competent individuals that actually care.
"let them eat cake" thats the government we got, no accountability for their actions.
True. We know what happened to the madam that uttered those words. I hope it happens to those in power now too.
Exactly 💯
As long as the ANC reighs things will never get better. And it's time black south Africans see what's going on.
The worst thing anyone can do in crises situations is to make debt in order to pay debt. Just a matter of time and this loan pit will be empty. Its a dead end street.
One of my concerns is that the virus of corruption has infected so many politicians, that it will not matter who you vote for, because the vast majority of our politicians are corrupted. We need a mentality shift in our politics. We need the right type of leaders, the ones who truly care about the country and its people, instead of enriching themselves with money that was meant to make the country a better place ...and that is the more difficult task at hand.
One of our problems are the schools where the learners do not get useful, practical training.
Solar is not expensive if you go off-grid as well. . It's an investment that pays back in a few years. There are not many investments that pay off this quickly! Then afterwards you have electricity for free....
The solar panels have degradation as well as the batteries. Both needs to be replaced eventually. It normally takes 12+ years to break even and then a battery replacement is overdue. You'd make more money simply putting your cash in a savings account at a bank.
You either don't know what you are talking about or you are in line to benefit from solar panels somehow.
It is almost like here in Braamfischerville we are seen as uniformed and not deserving of seeing important National announcements. When SONA was broadcast electricity went off as soon as the president stated talking. It went off again as soon as the Minister of Finance started talking. Why are we targeted to miss such important speeches. Do you see us as persona non gata?
There is no more middle class in this country.
Hate to say this, but PW predicted this would happen. He must’ve had a crystal ball.
He was spot indeed, hope he was not a murderer of the masses though.
Your brother is part of the problems we have now sir! During his time, alarm bells were raised about Eskom and did he do?
I don't think that is fair. He is not Thabo.
There is a strong need to educate the public in the manner that they will understand and have appetite to follow politics most south African opt watching dramas on tv than current affairs come the following day the see load shedding and never have a clue of political crisis there are in it's a very serious problem
